it took us a few days to prepare everything (buying all the supplies and making the town) and 2 days to shoot (a couple hours a day). The editing took a few months but that's because I didn't know how to use AfterEffects at the time. Now it'd probably take a few weeks.

For the blood we just mixed corn syrup and red food dye. To get the blood to splatter we just put some in a straw and shot it out with some compressed air (can also just blow into it but we had some tight corners so that wasn't always possible.

I can't remember where we got the sand from (I think my friend just had a sandbag sitting around). For the houses we just carved holes into shoeboxes and then sprayed stucco onto them and then spraypainted them that reddish/brown color.

Another thing that helps make it seem more 'real' or 'cinematic' is that I kept the camera zoomed in as much as possible which gives a nice depth of field effect (making foreground and background objects out of focus). It also helps smaller things look bigger.

Of course the downside is that the camerea is shaky as hell when not on a tripod as you can see.

There's a setting in after effects that pretty easily removes string and I actually had a version with the string erased out but my friends and I thought it was funnier with the string so we kept it in. Just like with the firecracker wrappers and stuff laying around it's a nice reminder that they're still toys having this large battles which helps make it more absurd I think.
