It doesn't take a geopolitical genius to understand what is going on. Spain was attacked for several reasons. First Madrid was an easy target. Low tech attack and massive casualties ( just like Sept. 11 ) Second, at the time the Spanish gov. supported the George Bush Iraqi war ( I'm sure the people of Spain were going to vote for a leader that didn't want anything to do with Bush's Iraqi blunder anyway) but the bombings just made that whole situation, a propaganda victory for Al Qaeda
