mel if you look at the lens there will be a switch saying AF on one side and MF on the other. switch it to AF it stands for automatic focus.

the camera should also be turned to automatic however this also fixes the colour.. for the colour press menu and try to find the brightness makes the picture lighter or darker, contrast makes you more sharp. hue and saturation fixes the colour .

Not sure if someone already let you know anyway, make sure you download all the info from the cd's inside the box. You can control the camera from you laptop once you do that and the best lens for someone who is not a professional photographer to get that focused look on you and a blurry backround is to buy a 50F 1.8 lens. Just ask anyone in the store about the lens and they will know exactly what it is. it's real inexpensive around $110. Hope this helps. Nice gifts and video

If you are editing your videos with iMovie, when you go to save your video, make sure you are saving/ compressing it on the HD or highest quality setting. Same thing for when you're uploading it to YouTube That's my guess.

check the white balance. if you want to do custom. take a picture of a white paper in the place you're filming and set that as your custom white balance. do so until the paper shows up white in camera, and the colors are normal.

Ex. When you edit a video in Windows Live Movie Maker, you can save it in different t qualities, Standard 480p, HQ 720p & 1080p or something like that. And then you just choose to save it as HD :)

I don't really think you need a special lens for what you want to shoot for. If you wanted a bokeh look (blurry background, focused subject) then you want to look at either a f/1.4 or f/1.8 lens. It'll get you that effect you want, but it'll be a lot harder to shoot on because its a prime lens (doesn't zoom) and it'll be hard to manual focus because the camera will be too far away from you and you won't be able to manually focus on product. Also, Canon's don't offer autofocus!

with the canon t3i you can't have it autofocus i believe but to have your background blurry and you in focus, your background has to be far enough from your subject or in this case you so that the background becomes blurry

As far as aperture, the lower the number means the larger the opening for light to hit your sensor. Small number, more light. and vice versa. Shooting with lower apertures also decreases your Depth of Field (DOF).The smaller DOF, the more blurry the background will be! :)

Also, the Macro setting on your camera (should be a flower) makes the DOF much smaller.

You just have to play with the manual focus.. with DSLRs once you focus the camera on a specific distance, if you move an inch forward (or behind) you'll be out of focus. A great lens to have is the EF 50mm f/1.4... it will give you the exact effect you want. Focused on you but background is blurry :). Hope that helps!
