Is this a sad song? What I have found from the lyrics is the following: It is a story of a man who was in faith and was a member of a religious community but then he met with this "bad woman" who did not believe in God but the man fell so much in love with her that he left his community for this woman. However the woman betrayed the man and he lost his faith for both faith and love. I am not a native english speaker so what is the story of this song from your point of view? Thank you.
It is written by Leonard Cohen. It begins "I heard there was a secret chord, that David played and it pleased the Lord" that is about King David and he saw BathSheva bathing on the roof - her beauty was so much... there is a part of the this song about her beauty, and what he did, was have someone killed to have her love. but there is more to it than that, and i don't know exactly, you'd have to ask Leonard Cohen... the great singer/ poet/ songwriter.
kalajarvi, many of the early verses are stories from the hebrew bible (aka old testament aka tanakh). leonard cohen wrote two main versions: one has more exclusively religious verses, each of which describes a biblical story, and the other is more secular, with verses that describe the deterioration of a sexual relationship. i haven't heard some of the lines that moshe daniel sings here, but cohen wrote many many verses for it, so it might just be lines from cohen that i haven't heard before.
Well if you're not a native English speaker you speak better English than most native English speakers - congratulations! Just a great song & Leonard Cohen is still, at 75, the best!
I love that it's the REAL version of the song, not the depressing Jeff Buckley version that makes everyone think this is a sad song, when really it isn't. Good on you for doing it right!
Thank you. I attribute the wonder of this song to Leonard Cohen, naturally. He tapped into a true masterpiece here, and I have just brought to light a small portion of its potential.
This is not how hallelujah should be sung...
