remember when you download a file you wont download it at the speed of what you have, if you are downloading a file of 700meg and you have a 50 meg connection you will download at just over 5 meg a sec 40 meg connection download t 4 meg and so on
@Mrdaddygangster 50mbps is megabits per second and because their are 8 bits in a byte, it actually works out as 6.25 megabytes per second. Most files are measured in megabytes and Internet providers advertise their service in megabits (to make it look faster) so it can get very confusing :)

@AliRidge2 Actually Virgin Media are getting worse. I've been a customer for 9 years and never had an issue. The last year or so, they've been having problems with high jitter, and it's affecting a lot of people who play online games, including myself. BT Infinity doesn't have this issue.
If you have a problem with virgin internet, Restart your modem, They weren't designed to be on for years and years, same with all modems. I have virgin internet on 100MB, Never a problem.

the ping on faster connections is only usually effected by the server you use on speedtest. A popular server will become over run and take longer to reply to an echo request.

Upgrading the speed has nothing to do with them bars you speak of. They are the latency, which determine how long it takes for it to go from your xbox, to the host and back again. You would get low latency on older games even on 56K! A common problem that people overlook is there modems. BT have the modem and the router built into the one device where as Virgin up till recently had to have seperate devices. That is where the problem comes in, the home HUB is worth £70ish there abouts
so it really is a top notch router. Alot of ISP's supply cheap routers which are not fully compatible with Xbox Live, this includes Virgin, Orange, AOL, Talk Talk and Sky. This is the reason why you have these red bars. The routers supplied by alot of ISP's are, put simply, a load of s**t! The best routers you can buy seperatley are Linksys and Belkin so you might have to look into buying one of these (or put an ad on Freecycle!)

A red bar doesn't always mean your connection is slow. Infact, sometimes it can mean it's to fast. If everyone else in the game has green and your the only one with red, the game could of slowed your connection down so the other players can keep up with you. Also, don't forget, peak time for us is wake up time for America who actually have some of the worlds slowest broadband connections.

The PlayStation Network is free so therefore to keep the servers running smoothly they limit your download speed. This is a very common question all ISP's are asked, but it's Sony that are to blame. Between 3PM and 9PM Xbox Live also limit your download speed to roughly 4Mb to keep up with demand. Also, speedtests are not accurate with cable broadband (mine says i get 5Mb and at the last second shoots to 600Mb as it catches up). Try using IDM to download a file from Microsoft

I have Virgin Media 50 Meg connection too. It is great, I am always getting my 50 Meg speed. The downside is the upload speed, it is 2MB, Virgin Media should really increase that to a higher number to even it out.
You should go onto bbc iplayer and download a hd program! I have Virgin Media 20 meg and can download at 16 mb/s. Please try and let me know the results as I'm seriously considering the 50. cheers

I've got fibre to the home tho, only availiable in Bournemouth. When I download something it's usually 10-11mb/s. Btw Nice connection man.

You are so lucky. I have VM 20mb and its terrible.
I'll hit about 800kb/s at 3:00AM if I'm very lucky. Other than that it's about 400kb/s.
I just had it installed a week ago. A part of me dies when I remember I still have over 11 months left on the contract.

I have Virgin Media 50 Meg connection too. It is great, I am always getting my 50 Meg speed. The downside is the upload speed, it is 2MB, Virgin Media should really increase that to a higher number to even it out.
