I understand from my friend who used to work for the Rock island in there passenger department than freight that the Iowa Interstate has all the rights to use the Rock Island name again so this is appropriate he told me they were going to reserect the Rock Island again and I thought he was jokeing my God he was serious LOL this is great t see I must show this to him next time I do a private car trip with him (you have seen the car Nick)the Cal Z car that I am allways on he owns that one
@gaycowboy31 An IAIS conductor told me don't get your hopes up,The Rock Island as we know it is gone for good IAIS doesn't own the Rock's name. Once a company goes bankrupt (not filing chapter 11) & sells off its assets the orginal name can't be used again. Union Pacific can run several "Heritage" paint jobs because they "bought" those railroads out in mergers. Rock Island was not bought out or merged they just bankrupted. IAIS did this one-off engine as a tribute to the Rock Island, thats it.
@ILSRWY4 hmm very interesting that makes sense really its still a very pretty Heritage unit even though it most likelly will be the only one it sounds like I still feel the IAIS did a great job on this unit the information given to me by people is not allways correct so thats understandable and I might have just misunderstood him too
@gaycowboy31 I totally agree with you- they did an out standing Job!!! As a side note- I have heard that IAIS was going to do one or two other "Rock" paint schemes. Probably Both the red & yellow and Marroon & yellow or maybe the Ugly Blue and white (lets hope not:). I haven't confirmed this with any IAIS Employees at my end... so if you or anyone else who reads this knows any confirmation of other heritage schemes... that would be appreciated.
@ILSRWY4 really i hvent heard anthing else about it being down here in Texas IAIS news only reaches us down here in Train magazines or here on youtube ..I was just a little kid in the final years of the Rock Island so all I remember was the Powder Blue units sometimes a Red and Yellow one but mostlly the Blue and finally mixed into MoPac blue consist later but my dad took me around Dallas in the mid to late 70s to see it die(hurts to say) I was born in 1975 so I got some of it but mostlly blue
@ILSRWY4 that one time my friend told me about the IAIS doing this was it really I remember him referencing something to the IAIS about the right to use the Rock name and he might have just been talking about this heratage unit but he told me to look out for it one time he used to be a Rock Island Employee in the passenger years working in the big office in Chicago so I figure he was referenceing to this and wishing the Rock would return not saying IAIS has full rights to reserect the Rock
nice catch Nick its great that Iowa Interstate has done this this is how I vision the Rock island looking like if they had survived into today and that 1950s paint scheme fitted with that 5 chime whistle is so appropriate I remember the very last days of the Rock island (some painted red and some powder blue)seeing it with my dad and there various motive power and mostlly all had P5 whistles on them..it looks like the Iowa interstate is railfan friendlly at least
@Metallsteinera LOL I agree I grew up seeing the very last years or the Rock island and that blue paint but I also saw some of the red I would have loved to have been around when Rock Island ran this paintscheme but this was about 20 years before my time LOL
In a hobby where we are likely to see far more lasts than firsts, this is certainly a refreshing change of pace. A real sharp looking engine, only thing that could make it better is putting a Rock Island OC P5 on it. Great video!
