Can't believe they scrapped all the class 23's. However, we can recreate anything these days right? a baby deltic is nothing more than bluebrints and steel, we destroyed all the originals, lets remake one using skemetrics and modern day electrics and technology! just like the original without the reliability problems!
@TheCatapultTV :O OH NOOO POOR 37!, only joking, it looks and sound s great in a 37, get the 37s engine in it too for ultimate power!!!!, now go and paint it in EWS....
Now that the engine is running spot on,will it stay in 37372's body and made to run under its own power or is it just going to be used as a static exhibit?
It's a characteristic of the engine design. due to the 3 banks of cylinders/3 crankshafts, there is phasing gear on the crank output side of the motor to give a common output, it's these phasing gears oscillating when the engine shuts down that makes the noise
First time I have ever heard that engine running and it sure sound as free reving and its bigger brother.
But where on earth did the unit come from surely they would all have been scrapped along with the locos after all the locos were scrapped because they were non-standard.
Did this unit have other applications such as its bigger brother Napier unit had in boats?
Shame a class 23 wasn't preserved especially as one was used for years at the RTC in Derby.
Hellfire!! got a lighter quicker note than a D18-25, its a pitty that its not clagged up to all the auxillary machines via driveshafts like on the original 23's then you'd get the weird whirring noise with it too ;)
I resent that remark!! there is feck all wrong with Paxman 16YHXL block number 55902 currently installed in D8233, it will be a runner as soon as we get the genny back from overhaul next year. (J.Lovell C15PS committee member)
No offence whatsoever was ment by that remark! I just know a lot of money is needed to get the generator repaired and with running an appeal myself, I know people arn't so keen to hand over their cash in the 'current economical climate'. I just think it was remarkable that 7076 was able to operate at the ELR gala using one of 1041's powerunits. I would love to see your loco up and running and appreciate the hard work you are putting into getting her operational! Hope to see her running soon?!

are they called baby deltics because they have lower noses?
droon124 2 months ago
@droon124
No, because it has the smaller T9-39 Deltic and it's a smaller locomotive.

Pardon me, I meant T9-29.

Did they have to 'Cut and shut' the tractor's body as they weren't as big as the 37's
clydeferries 6 months ago
why don't they put this in the Bay Deltic and one day preserve that and run it.

Take a BR class 20 chassis and fit the T9-29 and generator set.
Chop the cabs and ends off a 37 and modify the windows a bit.
Butcher up some new body work and cobble together some control gear.
I'm sure theres enough scrappers to make something that looks very much like a baby deltic.

Lovely, smooth Deltic power. Needs two baby Deltic engines to get the harmonics of 2 engines running together, Awesome!
pookleburger 1 year ago
@pookleburger I agree- but this engine is the only one in existence sadly
mrspivvy 1 year ago
@pookleburger The Baby Deltics only ever had one engine. They wouldn't have been big enough for two.

JJust listen to that Deltic Hum, unlike the engine she would've had which just growls and farts..

What a great sound - even better if you could get her moving along the track with a bit of weight - clagtastic.

What a brilliant idea. Doesn't it sound good when they give it a bit of welly. Now, who wouldn't pay for a ride behind that?
Still sounds like a bag of spanners when they shut it down, though.

Don't take it the wrong way Phil, but I'm no fan of Deltics to be honest.
I do however agree with Woolybak8, that this does indeed sound better than an 'Adult Deltic'
Strange how the smaller engines can sometimes out thrash the larger ones.

what happened to the actual bodyshell?
bronzeonion 2 years ago
It was cut up in the late 1970's
pwormald 2 years ago
oh, are the people that are restoring the engine going to build a brand new bodyshell or are they going to carry on using the 37?
bronzeonion 2 years ago
@pwormald Is this engine actually ised to run the 37372, or is it used for auxillary power purposes?
