not necessarily i breed labs all the time, and i have plenty of females with lots of black, and males with no black at all... if your going to sex the young, the males tend to get larger, and develop their yellow color first, sometimes getting getting eggspots while they are really small

mine have always sexually matured at 1.5-2 inches... it takes them about 3-4 months
