....actually, quite informative and entertaining video. Just in case you play trumpet or another brass instrument, I think you might find some trumpet and brass tutorials quite intriguing over at YOURBRASSINSTRUCTOR's Channel.
Years b4 he joined Tony Bennett, you could tell he was a special player. He and Buddy really gelled on his solo, Buddy dropping be-bop bombs and accents in front of and in back of the bar. Classic.
Loved this arrangement of Clifford Brown's compositon. Lee Musiker? How about that? He now plays with Tony Bennett. What other pianist played with both Buddy and Tony?
Musiker's solo here is real solid, you could tell he had potential.
Something is fucked up with his neck.... WTF?? Just try to do that with your own neck... its impossible.... what a freak... but he sounded pretty good
I just noticed the large notch in Buddy's big pang cymbal on the right rear. I don't know if it was from a hard hit or what. You would think they would replace it if it was damaged, but Buddy was one who always said that if something sounded good leave it alone. There is that famous story about , i think it was Armand zildjian, who fixed a wrinkled front bass drum head at a show and Buddy said that if it sounded good he should not have messed with it.
McSweeney told me he was going to present Buddy with a 14x28 bass drum just like the size Buddy played very early in his career. This was after he had given him this RK set.
He was able to find enough to wrap the 14x28 and he was going to give it to Buddy which was during the time Buddy was in the hospital due to the brain tumors. A couple of days before the suprise gift, Buddy passed.
one more thing about the radio kings and I'll be out
I find it amazing that BUDDY RICH drummers drummer just said "screw the endorsement deals" I mean here is a guy that could have been PAYED to play any drum he chose!
just a side note to how REAL buddy was
show me one guy out there today that doesn't have a hundred different company logo's on their bass drum
This was recorded in october 1983 NOT in 1984. In 1984 Bob bowlby was in the Buddy rich band and as you can see he had not joined the band here so....
it's picking lint at this point but I'm pretty sure this is 1984 not 83..in 1983 he was still using ludwig albeit unendorsed! I saw him directly after his heart attack and he was still using the ludwig kit with the "ludwig" name torn off the head lol the outline of the logo was still there as was the BR logo..the mcsweeny kit came in a bit later...remember after buddy's heart attack mcsweeny gave him a snare drum and the rest of the kit was presented to him later that year.
The date is definitely October of 1983 and the pianist is Lee Musiker, not Dick Cully. I was on the band and have the entire gig on VHS. Just thought I'd set the record straight.
Yeah the dick cully thing was a joke (the guy looks like him) I dunno, maybe it was the herb I smoked with Br that has my memory mixed? because if you look back (you must have been on the band) when he did lake compounce in bristol Ct. it would have been a couple of month earlier than this gig..he didn't have the radio kings on that tour...he just didn't, those came a year later. I would say you were right but I SAW him using the ludwig kit. in 83. the radio kings were still in mcsweeny's shop
McSweeney told me on the phone that he was shocked that Buddy would just lay the Radio Kings down inside the compartment on the bus they traveled in with no drum cases. In other words the snare stand would still be attached to the snare drum and turned over with the stand in the air where it rested on the bus trips.
I had to think about this, but I was with Buddy for several days during this week down in FL, and it was '83. You're right, the Radio Kings were a new acquisition. At the time I first saw them, I couldn't believe how big the 26" looked. I said, "How can I get set like this?". He replied, "You can't!". Lol. During this same gig (2 days in Jacksonville), Buddy had an altercation with Art Blakey on stage. Art was pretty deaf, but he wasn't blind, and he took offense at BR trying to help.
interesting about Blakey! I spoke to Blakey's daughter some years ago and she told me of how Art was in serious pain due to arthritis much of his later career. not sure how well known that info was at the time but I'm sure the insiders knew ie: Buddy etc,
yeah so the radio king set verses the ludwig sighting the same year is prob. what threw me off a bit but neither date is THAT far apart, I saw him in the late summer of 1983 old ludwig drums with the name peeled off the BD. the set looked beat . I was kinda shocked by that ..btw it was a great show buddy was in a great mood and allowed my brother and I to hang with him before the gig...great times indeed!
Bonsker, how was it to work with Buddy rich in this period of time(1983)? I have heard some stories about him that he could sometimes be quite diifuclt to work with and alsoe very demanding at times. Of course he was a human being like the rest of use.You and the band played this arrangment incredible good!!Thanks I appricate this very much!
I like the sound of his Slingerland Radio King drums in this video...nice large open sound!.... I can almost here that big open Gene Krupa sound also in this video too! Great stuff! Thanks.
Yes this is about the time he started using the last set he ever owned. A reconditioned set of 1940 Radio Kings. I had a date for the homecoming dance and skipped it to watch this concert. Probably wouldn't have gotten a piece anyway.
Frightening--perhaps, but it's just the way I've played since I can remember. That's me at age 21. Someone commented earlier and made a medical assumption that my neck is/was herniated due to back pressure. No herniated neck then or now. I do however know some cats that do have herniated necks and play just fine. Just thought I'd set the record straight. Oh--BTW-- that is Mark Lopeman on lead alto.
Holy cow, a response from the actual player! Well really great work for 21 Bonsker :) I play along with this version on bass when I practice sometimes :)
Thanks. Mark and I played together in college and I now direct the jazz ensemble where Mark went to high school. I knew he played with Buddy, but had never heard any recordings.
Andy Gravish Right? You sound Great in this solo.. That's Dave P on lead bone and (Matt Harris... no he's piano player) Matt something on 2nd trb. I am trb player and knew some of these guys. Can you run thru the names on this date. I was in a couple of bands in the NY area during those years. Thanks Roy
Thank you Roy. It was a long time ago but seems like only a few years ago. The guys in the band are: Doug Clark, Dana Watson, Jeff Folkens and myself--trumpets. Dave Panicchi, Mike Davis and George Geslein -trombones. Steve Marcus, Andy Sterman, Mark Lopeman, Oliver Peters and Keith Bishop- saxophones. Lee Musiker on piano, Ron Stone subbing that day for the late, great Dave Carpenter, and of course "The Master" Buddy at the center of gravity.
Sorry Roy. Slight correction-- that's Fred Stone (not Ron) on bass subbing for Dave Carpenter. My apologies to you and Fred. It's been a minute or two since...
Thanks Andy... I think we played a gig togther.. you look familar.. 1983 I was 20 so we are about the same age. A good pal of mine is a drummer in the Buddy style. His name is John Jamison and has a myspace page where he put some stuff up. I never had the pleasure of playing with Buddy but I went to most of his NY gigs. If you played with him you made it, so to speak. How long were you on the BR's band.. give us some stories..LOL What are you up to now still playing I hope? Thanks Roy
The problem with the trumpet soloists neck is that he has played with so much back pressure in the past that he's actually herniated his neck. It's also happened to Wayne Bergeron of Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band and some really famous double reed players.
Buddy Rich played at my high school of all places in 1980 or 1981 and played this song. After the show when I was getting his autograph, he actually hit on my mother! I thought that was the coolest thing!
