  • Watching it on south park

  • Rainbow is the band......

  • @frez777 yes!!

  • I would never have guessed they would ever make a cover of this song, actually quite good :-)

  • This is pre-finger tapping Eddie.

  • the club day's would've been something to see. lot's of looking at a player (eddie) with our jaw's dropping.

  • I remember seeing these guys at a backyard party in Pasadena as well as the Golden West in Huntington Beach somewhere around '74. They had all the props even back then!

  • The recording sound's like shit, but it is VAN HALEN........\"/

  • Dio (R.I.PPED) died buyt this cover will live on in destiny. I caught Eddie's guitar piyck at Gazzzari's and iyt's NOYT FOR SALE!

  • Sounds like amazing times. All I got was pre-emo kids, lots of politi-punk & Patchouli (sp?).

I was born 10 years too late.... lol.

  • you guys are idiots its a Rainbow song not DIO and there ya have it!

  • VH's beggining started back in Cali in 1972 with Roth as their singer.

  • Comment removed

  • Rainbow

  • Vh coverin' DIO ??? = Awesome !

  • Vh coverin' DIO ??? = Awesome !

  • Vh coverin' DIO ??? = Awesome !

  • This is definitely VanHalen, they officially formed in 1976, but toured with David Lee Roth as "Mamoth" previously. Gene Simmons from KISS discovered them and helped them get their first album off the ground, you can hear Genes influence in this song.

  • 1:03 mike actually looked good back in the day, alex, on the other hand, was always a creepy looking dude ;p

  • @ultrakool i always thought he looked liked Richard Ramirez

  • @mcstaford right, haha. check alex's palms for pentagrams..he might just be the night stalker. lol

  • @chuerowrench. Yes, this is Van Halen but it couldn't have been way back when they were doing covers in the SFV. This song was written long after they became famous! I expect that it is a tribute to Ronnie James Dio.

  • @lverock This song was written in 1975. This performance is from late 1975. It is NOT a tribute; just a cover.

  • @lverock check you facts! This was the first song on the first Rainbow album. Nobody had even heard of Van Halen when this song came out and Eddie was still in high school!

  • @lverock Actually "Man on the Silver Mountain" was released in 1974 so it very easily could have been from this time period. And notice that DLR's voice is not shot out like it is now, as well as no finger rolls which are the latter EVH trademark

  • @lverock Actually, I have to disagree with you. "Man on the Silver Mountain", on the Rainbow debut album, was released in 1975. Van Halen was still doing fairly small gigs (high schools, the Hollywood club scene, etc.) up until recording their debut album late 1977. Of course, after that album came out, the rest is history. However, I believe this particular recording WAS when VH was still doing covers.

  • @lverock Man on the silver mountain was written in 1975

  • @lverock Not to metion, 1975 is in no way *long after* they were famous. A few years early, actually.

  • @lverock NO! Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow LP came out in '75. Long before anyone ever heard of VH. This cover version sucks out loud, by the way - and it ain't the recording quality, either.

  • @lverock ????? Man on a Silver Mountain was on the 1st Rainbow Album release in the summer of 1975? why do you say it was released way after Van Halen was famous???

  • @paisleyization it's a complement to be imitated ... yes. to be 21 again ah..

  • Can't stand that ridiculous Michael Anthony Falsetto.

  • They would all have been about 21 years old then, it's always great to hear covers from any band..........

  • Not really a tribute. Just a cover of a band they liked. This is over 35 years ago.

  • Holy F They Butchered It....Seriously....Steal His Licks....Iz That Like A Joke Or Somethin??

  • This is Van Halen. Called themselves Mammoth (at least sometimes) way back when they were doing covers in the San Fernando Valley. This is likely before their first album. Eddie used to play his solos with his back to the audience so no one would steal his licks. Backyard parties that went on till the keg ran out or the cops shut it down. Good times.

  • @chuercowrench Yes, way before the first album. When I first saw them in '76 at the Whiskey A Go Go, they were no longer doing much with covers, and playing primarily originals. They played La Grange once, but later Bottoms Up instead. They played You Really Got Me all the time, including on the first album in '78. By then, I'd seen them at the Pasadena Civic, Golden West Ballroom, the Starwood, Magic Mountain and about 25 times at the Whiskey. We lucked out to see those gigs.

  • @DanaLitwin I have never heard this clip before. Eddie already had the chops! So cool to hear this. Thanks!

  • @chuercowrench

truth right there, lols,,,and as many bigtime bands they also played small gigs (like in Austin and dallas tx) where they arrive unnaounced or billed under a psydonyme like mammoth, boys of the sun, crazy 8's etc....one or all of the members would surprize many, insiders were given the heads-up and crowded the venue, 6th street Austin tx was blocked off to traffic many a night in the day, lols as tour buses just pulled up and parked sideways or w/e and the party began!

  • @chuercowrench I remember those party's well..Grew up in South Pasadena and Rolled with the SoCal. Chevelles. They played a bunch of our back yard parties. What I wouldn't give for just one more weekend like that. 74 and 75 were some awesome years!

  • @chuercowrench wow, I remember those days. Van Halen at the Pasadena civic center on friday nights. being a Black Sabbath fan I asked David Lee Roth if they would play some Black Sabbath one night at Arcadia masonic temple, they played Supernaut. one night at Tonys junk yard they played until 4:00 a.m. with the El monte police out front to keep things going good. they love to rock & roll.

  • @chuercowrench I'm sure the band did backyard parties in the San Fernando Valley too, but their backyard was the San Gabriel Valley. Pasadena/Arcadia/Sierra Madre area mostly. Eddie was in my graduating class at Pasadena High School. We hung out sometimes, but he was usually so busy practicing, that he was more home than out partying with us. But, he sure did like to party! And if the keg, or kegs, did run dry, we went on a beer run! Fun times!

  • @arklat I did see them in Pasadonuts. It's kinda like the east end of the Valley ;)

  • @chuercowrench I heard they played at my High School (Clairemont High in San Diego) back when they were doing So Cal stuff.. Don't know if it's fact. Would have been cool though. Must've been mid 70s I'm guessing.

  • From 75, cool. I always loved that riff.

  • I've always thought the riff to this song influenced "And The Cradle Will Rock" And if you can't tell this is Van Halen, then you never were a fan.

  • This in no Tribute To Ronnie James Dio, ITS OBVIOUS THIS WAS PERFORMED BACK IN 1975 by Van Halen. Michael Anthony even said it when Ronnie Passes away. They used to do Raimbow cover songs, and this is one of then!

  • Thanks for the post. Never heard VH do this. cool. RIP Ronnie

  • This is just too weird. VH did quite a few obscure songs. I could be wrong but Rainbow and The Scorpions (Uli Roth was a big influence on Eddie) were not headline acts in the US until the 80's. Maybe it's an LA thing where people in the area knew about different bands before the rest of the country by a few years. Anyone from LA in and around that era care to elaborate??

  • yeah its halen poor qual sound but halen

  • RIP Dio...Sadly missed by all in the Rock world..Never forgotten...

  • some people r slow, its fuckin vanhalen 100%. fi you didnt believe it, why did you watch and listen?

if you wanna bitch, go talk to mama, shut the fuck on here, ya damn crybabies!

thanx, zachvanhalen for the priceless download...

  • wow , where do you guys dig this stuff up... i would take it to Pawn Stars, not stick it up on Youtube lol

  • Search daniel4REVer and SUBSCRIBE!!!!!!!

  • is thi s a tribute to Ronny James Dio?

  • @Syzygy60 No.

  • @Syzygy60 Van Halen did several Raimbow songs back in the days before they where famous! as We all know Not only did Diosabbath influence many bands but Raimbow did too!! Long live Ronnie James Dio!

  • @Syzygy60 This is indeed a tribute to the incredible, late Ronnie James Dio. It's good to know that VH held Dio in such high regard! Thanks for posting.

  • @Syzygy60 recorded in 1975, I don't so.

  • @Syzygy60 Ritchie Blackmore

  • Not bad at all... Wow Dave sings this song great.... excellent version of this classic song by Rainbow.... Van Halen the good old days......

  • wow, never heard this one. david really sounds strong. wish i could have seen them back this early.

  • ...Van Halen also used to do KC & the Sunnshine band covers when they first started....

  • How can he call this Van Halen

  • @theblackdog84 u lucky bastard. Tix r 2 much 4 dad n me.

  • @BeatlesKid1999 The first time I saw VH was back in '76. I think the ticket was $7.50 or $8.50, two bucks for parking, and that was for three bands. There was no ticketmaster or processing fees. If you didnt have a ticket you just walked up to the door and bought one on your way in,,, life was good.

  • Van Halen played downtown d/fw right out in the street, for like 4 hours, open air free seudo/secret concert, people came from miles around and we couldn't begin to count the crowd, was an awsome day!

  • @Jackle61

@Jackle61 saw them in Austin Tx and the backroom bar for 3.50, all the local guitar hero wanna be's, including myself and abbott brothers were there, and yea, he played his ass off back then, they did covers and I think 3 original tunes, but they kicked ass and earned the texas ghetto pass for life, and when Hagar lost his voice years later yet just jammed thru his solo concert he vowed to returen and make up for it, and well,

  • Anyone who thinks that this is Dio are probably tone deaf. By now you should know what a cover is. Tip: it's not a comforter.

  • Deep Purple, or Rainbow, with Richie Blackmore

  • Awesome cover long live king Dio! Can't wait to see VH live in the united center home of the Chicago bulls haha I'm gonna wear a condom just in case I ejaculate.. jk ROFL

  • Interesting cover. Peace.

  • Ah man rock n roll is all just fun shit....too serious....better than that dink Hagar....least you laugh when you see Diamond Dave....enjoy it for the fun man!

  • cant believe it.the 70S WERE THE BEST.EVEN THE BEST BANDS FROM THE 80S WERE FROM THE 70S.THANX FOR THIS.I could see VH covering zep.cream but this really shocked me

  • I have anew respect for Davey Lee and Van Helen and Tatto is on top now

  • If any idiots think that is Ronnie Dio on vocals they no sod all about rock music.

  • two completely different bands, singers and styles. this is pure van halen from the moment it kicks off, and never deviates.

and a classic eddie solo to cap it off.

  • Ronnie James can't imitate Dave....Dave can't imitate Ronnie. ..... i can't believe some of the comments...... so what you are saying is that Richie (arrogant) Blackmore covered his own song, and hired David Lee Roth to sing. R. Blackmore is too arrogant to even think about re-covering his own song.... People can't be this dumb, can they? No, I'm cereal. If I was asleep and heard this, within the first 25 seconds, I'd jump and say "hey Van Halen really was a great cover band,...etc...

  • lol @ 197054lilsmokie your such a fail you can obviously tell this is dlr singing and van halen in the background playing they sound totally different from dio/rainbow learn your music before you post you troll

  • simply marvelous simply marvelous!

  • @197054lilsmokie LMFAO! Ladies and gentlemen: Feel free to attack this troll/complete fucking moron until the end of time.

  • @zackvanhalen I try not to feed trolls. I let them go on living life misinformed.

  • @zackvanhalen haha ,yeah,you speaks the truth,indeed!!!

  • @zackvanhalen I was thinking about it,,, but it's not worth it.

  • @197054lilsmokie If that is Ronnie James Dio, someone gave him the voice of David Lee Roth. :-)

  • @197054lilsmokie SORRY BUD YOUR HEAD IS IN YOUR ASS! IF THATS DIO THEN IM GANDOLF! THAT is dave

  • @197054lilsmokie it is not DIo singing. It does sound like DLR.

  • listen around 3:25. DLR signature scream.

  • @197054lilsmokie sorry man, but if you cant tell DIO from ROTH are you sure you can tell a guy from a girl? not only is roth's timbre very specific, he has infinitely less vocal latitude, technique and sheer punch than heavy metal's favorite midget. oh, yeah, and he (dlr) screams like a banshee at the beginning of this cut - that alone should be a unique signature.

  • @197054lilsmokie this doesn't sound anything like Dio or Blackmore. You can hear that it is Van Halen in the solo phrasing particularly

  • @197054lilsmokie How the hell you can possibly think that this is Ronnie James Dio I'll never know.... shakes head in disbelief......

  • Comment removed

  • @197054lilsmokie I SAW Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow WITH the great, the one & only RJD IN 1977.... they opened with this song, and if you think it sounded ANYthing like this.... please find your meds. Quickly.

  • @197054lilsmokie Sorry; I'm 100% sure that's David Lee Roth on vocals.

  • @197054lilsmokie That's right RJD was well known for sometimes doing a flawless impersonation of DLR. And of course Blackmore had clearly been influenced by EVH at this point as he appears to have changed his lead style completely - genius. The final proof of your argument is of course Rainbow deciding to have someone introduce them as Van Halen. Oh how they must have chuckled at the joke they were playing.

  • @197054lilsmokie Zack's right you are a total moron!!!!!!!!!!! You don't know your music very well or guitar players or singers or anything as far as that goes!!!!!!! Go back in the closet!!!!!!!!

  • @197054lilsmokie <------complete idiot. You need to pull your head out of your ass and breathe some fresh air.

  • @197054lilsmokie If you think thats Ronnie james Dio you need to go back to listening to you r Lady Gaga records or whatever youve been listening to lately cuz you dont have a fucking clue.... I'm hoping you were trying to be funny when you typed that.

  • @197054lilsmokie You made an honest mistake, don`t let all the hatefull comments bother you. I`m sure if they were face to face nobody would have the guts to say fuck all. Internet toughguys.

  • @197054lilsmokie That's David Lee Roth not doubt about it...

  • @197054lilsmokie Holy shit dude. You need your head checked. Even at the beginning of the song they annonced them as Van Halen. Come on it's obvious if you've ever heard VH you should know David Lee's voice! Sheesh!

  • @Ploffit ...I heard they used to do Victim of Changes by Priest too...

  • @197054lilsmokie Are you friggin' deaf? That's definitely DLR singing, and this isn't even close to sounding like Richie. Definitely EVH on guitar.

  • @197054lilsmokie you are just kinda dumb because you don't know how Dio really sounds. It isn't him and he says its Van Halen at the beginning.

  • @197054lilsmokie i agreeee

  • @197054lilsmokie Are you serious?????? no.... you can't be serious...... Are you??? No no.. you can't be serious... Good joke, damn good joke...

  • @197054lilsmokie Dude this is obviously Van Halen doing a cover . There's no mistaking Eddie's tone, DLR's voice, and Michael Anthony's wail.... DAMN dude

  • @197054lilsmokie Stop insulting Ron moron. Have you already heard his voice ?

  • @197054lilsmokie No. It it sounds like crappolla & sucks and therefor is NOT the great Ritchie B. Or Ronny D. of Rainbow.

  • @197054lilsmokie You can easy tell its David Lee Roth

  • Awesome! If Eddie was smart (another life) he would have put out an Amazing huge box set of all the live & MANY bootlegs and try to master them - VH should have recorded on a live LP - but the DLR & Noel Monk had the marketing magic that has been totally missing from VH - Eddie took the band totally Corporate $ and $ucked the soul out - It will be interesting to see what DLR will contribute to the new LP - Cheers

  • did you photoshop that picture right before the hand?

  • @MrEmohdee No.

  • 1975? really?

    Is this an old demo?

2 years before the release of their first insane LP?

  • @BlueRIff63 True man but Ed and Beck are two diferent cats. Ed was in the biggest rock band for 10 years and Beck had to struggle, and that tends to keep players fresh and hungry. Beck said the 80's and 90's were his low point in life. I agree what you said about beck still having it, I saw Beck in 2009 and he's kicking it.

  • DLR is the only guy who could walk into a biker bar wearing ass-less chaps and they'd think he was cool.

  • @gostillerz

All chaps are assless. Otherwise theyre called "pants".

  • oh yeah, diamond dave and Eddie know how to rock!!!

  • Saw VH open for Black Sabbath in Milwaukee, WI in '78.

Even though the sound was crap in some disgustingly acoustically-challenged might-as-well-have-been-a-big-money-f**ing-barn type coliseum, VH was clearly a hungry, young and hot band climbing to the top. BS had some awkward moments as the feeling was maybe this is the twilight of their career--it was eerie now that I realized that I was lucky to witness such a strange dichotomy of two, now classic bands of all time--a rare defining moment.

  • @shawntoh Saw the same show in Los Angeles. Anaheim Stadium, July 1978. Sammy Hagar, Van Halen, Black Sabbath, Boston.

  • @Moralvorstellung7 do you have any music from that concert.

  • @shawntoh Interesting. I didn't see the show that year, but reports from my sister who saw that tour in Detroit said the same - Van Halen as an opening act got an encore which she remembered being pretty unusual at the time. DLR was doing not so much acrobatics like later on because it's tough to do in leather pants and platform shoes. But she said the vibe at the show was that VH was way more exciting than Sabbath and most people hadn't heard of them before the show.

  • @BlueRIff63 I saw Van Halen open for Black Sabbath (On There Never Say Die Tour} But they were dead. VH kicked major Arse that night!

  • @danconway327 Oh, yes--:) I saw them on that tour, too, in Cincinnati. The crowd applauded for Sabbath, but went bonkers for Van Halen. VH came out and rocked and celebrated and blew us all away. "Never fear," said Dave, "Van Halen is here!" It was totally their evening.

  • @wordsmi999 You got that right. I saw Van Halen in Utica, NY. It was just after their debut album came out. Sabbath was headlining. It was kinda sad watching many people leaving after Sabbath came on. Van Halen owned that evening.

  • @1959bts I saw that tour at MSG in 1978.It was Sabbath~Never Say Die Tour...but,Van Halen ran with the baton

  • The Ladys from pasadena are too kind.

  • wish this was released with better audio

  • Its not the tone...Its the same riff....

  • Awesome- this is obviously during the Gazzarri strip days before they were signed-very cool.

  • @Gordfozzfoster Van Halen gigged A LOT back then and it's entirely possible that this is a show after its release .........November or December

  • You Really Got Me is the only Van Halen cover worth a shit.

This is crap as is their Wont Get Fooled Again cover of The Who.

They can top the Kinks but never The Who or Rainbow.

  • 0:29 best MA scream ever lol

  • @Gordfozzfoster They could have covered it right after it came out. It wouldn't have taken them more than a day's worth of practice to get it down.

  • @zackvanhalen True hendrix covered (live) sgt peppers lonely hearts club band, 2 days after it was released

  • @zackvanhalen i doubt that!

  • IM THE MOTHERFUCKER WHO RELEASED THIS SHOW !!! I GO WAY BACK WITH VH-COSTA MESA SPEEDWAY 74,BUENA PARK -CLASSIC CARS 1975

THE ORIGINAL; CD VERSION !!!I PAID $1,200 TO SPEED CORRECT THE ORIGINAL TAPE FROM AEROS BOGARTS - I GUESSED ON THE DATE OF SHOW -NO ONE TRADED THIS SHOW BEFORE I CORRECTED IT !!

YES IM THE SAME MOFO THAT RELEASED ALL THE ORIGINAL VH DEMOS/EARLY LIVE SHOWS !! A HUNDRED CD-R VERSIONS WERE ALL FROM MY ORIGINAL PIECES- YES THERE WERE MISTAKES ON DATES/ PLACES OF SOME CDS -

  • @poundinpat COOL STORY DUDE!!!1

  • @poundinpat What did you say....???

  • ok that was really cool...thanks for sharing!

  • I read one time that before Ed was famous he saw Ritchie Blackmore and approached him to say hello and Blackmore was just like "Who the fuck are you?" Really rude to him and shit. Then years later they met again and Ritchie didn't remember him of course, but just complimented him on his playing. True story O.O

  • @stubee5150 I've heard that story before but it was Joe Perry of aerosmith

  • A buddy of mine used to play Gazzarri's in '74-'75 told me to go check VH out, the drummer and guitarist were amazing. I was a drummer at the time and went to The Whiskey with my guitarist friend, we were 17 at the time and thought we were all that, we got shut down in about 30 seconds. Amazing show, saw them again at The Starwood, Eddie Nash's club, before they got too big for their britches

  • RAINBOW!!!

    FTW BLACKMORE And DIO

  • I used to watch these at backyard parties in the 70's.. grew in the so.pasadena area.

  • We used to watch these guys play parties in La Crescenta, & La Canada, Ca. They were from one of our neighboring high schools, in South Pasadena .

  • most bands that brought vh along to tour lived to regret it. i mean are you still gonna want to rock out to nugent after vh just played?

  • Dave trying to pull a Ronnie James

  • Roth did ripoff BOAs singer jim dandy mangrum

  • I saw them open for Black Sabbath in '78. It was a religious experience

  • @MrUltraworld Saw the same tour. Ozzie was a drunken wreck and i don't think he liked his opening act blowing BS away before they even got started. VH was a consumate R n' R band at the time. Dave was a great frontman and Eddie wailed from the shadows of his amps. Saw them a few years later at the Superdome and Dave was the one that was trashed drunk and VH did not perform well at all.

Much later I met Alex and Eddie backstage on the VH III tour and they were sadly both arrogant pricks.

  • @bent139 It was Madison Square Garden. The first night Ozzy came out & was a total wreck. He couldn't get the first line of Black Sabbath out. The people on the floor started hurling chairs towards the stage until the show stopped. People went nuts, I'm glad I was off the floor. The 2nd night Sabbath played a pretty good show. But it was hard going on after VH. They were on fire, razor sharp. It was like seeing aliens landing.

You should never meet your hero's, it's always a let down.

  • @MrUltraworld "They were on fire, razor sharp. It was like seeing aliens landing.' Just an excellent analogy. Still one of the best shows I have seen. Although VH played for less than an hour. Lucky that because of my former promotions job got to meet most of my rock hero's and even heroines (Nancy Wilson). These two stood out as they could not seem to relate to people. Wasn't surprised to later find Eddie had a meth problem. Still an amazing player and that's what really matters here.

  • @bent139 Thanks. Aliens landing is the best analogy I can make. I know what fans felt when they saw Hendrix for the first time. Ya know? That amazement, shock & awe. I build guitars & I worked in a good NYC shop. We met everyone who was any good. Leslie West was my favorite, he was hilarious & very nice. Joe Perry was a nasty junkie. Ed was drunk on 40oz Schlitz Malts, chain smoking. Never meet your heros.

  • @MrUltraworld Read your comment. I've worked part time as a sound man at different places over the years. You're right. Never meet your heros.

  • @atomicpunk48 I guess it depends on who your heroes are.

  • @MrUltraworld That's really wrecked when you can't get the first line of Black Sabbath out... that's the easiest one to sing in the whole Sabbath catalogue.

  • @TurtleFL Isn't it? "What is this that stands before me" He could not get that sentence out. He threw a fit & walked off! They jammed for a bit, but it was too late, the crowd on the floor threw all the chairs at the stage in a huge pile.

  • They did a great job on this cover and it's not too fast like most bands perform it -- too bad the primitive recording equipment didn't pick it up better... would've loved to hear this piece in my face!

  • @wahann:

Danny Joe Brown was never in Black Oak Arkansas.

  • Too bad a decent video or audio recorder didnt seem to exsist back then, or else everybody was just too high too use them properly.

  • From a guitar players point of view, I can almost guarantee that the main reason they are covering this song, is because Eddie cannot resist that infectious riff. An odd magic to this classic as well, I always instinctively type those words when I am worming up on the typewriter. "Man on the silver mountain". It just feels good when I type it. Don't know why.
