I love this synth and this piece really shows off what it can do. I have found it interesting that people either love it or hate it...and those who hate it usually have never played it. It's one of the most interesting instruments I've played.
@MarkRosengarten I can imagine hating it after playing it. It's really peculiar and one of a kind. I find myself using it a lot to doodle music, but I'm getting a bit tired of its limitations to make a full fledged piece. Still, a great piece of hardware.
@tamurasse I have had a Kaossilator and a Kaossilator Pro and they are both great for composing bits and pieces. The Pro has four sample banks that work a lot like the four tracks of the OP-1...infinite overdub but no undo. The OP-1 has a more visual guide and can be used for building up a song pattern by pattern...and the new finger sequencer seems like a real step forward. I also had a Tenori-On and it was also a quirky instrument. All instruments have limitations. :)
@tamurasse Yeah, when the iPad app came out, I sold the TO. I haven't used the app much at all. The OP-1 (which I previously owned but had to sell due to vet bills) makes an amazing keyboard for the iPad through the Camera Connection Kit and I will use it to make rhythm tracks and loops for my future songs once my new one finally gets here tomorrow (Fedex Smartmail SUCKS!!!!!). I hope to put up some vids of my own.
@urwholefamilydied Thanks for the praise ! Hosoda (the director for the Vuitton cartoon) is one of my favorite directors. :) And no, you can't, well, there's way to do it, but it's designed so you use the OP-1 keyboard...
@Gilbs2211 Some of the limitations I mention in the video are solved now (Like the fact you can save your patches) but others are not (NO SESSIONS...)
Nice piece of musik. Would like to have an op-1 myself. Of course a beginner should buy an M50 or better M3. But it's a great piece of art and hardware.
@pcuimac I, personally, would NOT advise a beginner towards these Synthstations. I find them very frustrating and boring. They try to be too much at the same time and can get a beginner lost pretty quickly. My advice would be going for a very simple synth, like the MicroKorg and try to make fun stuff in a linear recording software like Garage Band.
one of the best tracks I've heard with that beastie yet, nice job. I'm eager to get my hands on one as someone who used to travel round and grew up with a Yamaha VSS-30 and Casio SK-1 + dictaphone, the OP-1 looks like a dream come true. I guess hopefully as more people use it they'll be updating the OS and sorting the issues out, FX on each track and different "tapes" for each session would be a nice way to solve the single linear memory aspect of the tape function.
Nice, I want one! I got an email the other day from Teenage Engineering saying they had more in stock again, but an hour later they had sold out again. Flipping annoying if you can't check your emails all the time and the won't take orders in advance of stock... Oh well, I will get one eventually I guess.
Really appreciate your honest first impressions of this thing. All the things you made note of are nowhere to be found on the web when looking into this. The no sessions thing is a bummer, and did i understand you correctly, you can't do live fx? as in you can't add delay and mess with parameters?
@ianmcross The op-1 is less about sound and more about functionality, it has sampling, radio sampling (record fm radio and sample the beats/ vocals whatever), tape effects like rewind etc. and sequencing.
@ianmcross Well yeah, It's definetely not a groundbreaking synthesizer in terms of modelization and engines. The sounds you design can be fairly cool, but it's NOT a super modular nor a nice analog synth for your leads. It's less and more at the same time. It's a concept (as in "concept-car"), and I would not dare to judge it side by side with other products. It has a ton of flaws, but is also unique in its user friendly approach of quick beat and music making.
Hey, really nice track!! I just ordered my OP-1 and can't wait to play with it, hopefully soon! Can you make a video that shows the actual "making of" of such a song? (not just the final product?) That would be awesome!! :-)
The tune is really awesome. I would like to buy OP-1 too but some people told me that I shouldn´t buy it because I don´t have any experience with synthesizers and I probably won´t know how to use it. What do you think mate? Could I be able to learn how to use it? Thank you.
@Trefort2222 you gotta learn somehow and what a way to learn! besides I do have experience with synths and sound design, I would imagine the op-1 would have a very fast learning curve. I would also say don't let anyone ever discourage you, do what inspires you regardless of what the peanut gallery has to say.
@Trefort2222 If you have no experience at all with synthesizers and electronic music, I may suggest you try something less goofy at first to get a grip on how you can make music with hardware. Like a Roland Groovebox for example... But if you already are familiar with music uin a general sense, and have some experience with, say, GarageBand like softwares, you should give it a try. In any case, try to... well, try one before you buy.
@Trefort2222 Id suggest a Korg EMX1SD, they are a little cheaper and extremely user friendly. They will help you understand synthesis to a degree where you are ready to evolve. Find one used and you're set. I love this synth, wish I could get one but right now Im satisfied with my Waldorf Q and Korg EMX1SD with the Roland SP555. Cant go overboard with the Synths : P My one room apartment can't handle it. Love this song though, great composition. Beautifully relaxing.
@Trefort2222 forget bout this dude, don't listen to idiots. buy entry synth like M. audio Venom or Novation ultranova for half the price of this crappy OP1, you will be able to do 3x better syths.
@do2k76 hahah... nice joke. This synth rules. I've owned a million keyboards and can't wait til my OP-1 arrives in the mail. If you're strapped on cash I agree with you. This keyboard should be more like 400 bucks. But if you can afford it, don't hesitate.
@urwholefamilydied Well, it's just when I see keyboard with built in speaker it can't be serious:)) more like a toy for kids. When I will see some serious musicians using it maybe I'll change my mind.
@djthomaswhite Thank you ! And thanks for the tip ! But where does it save the patch to, and how to recall it ? Can I save multiple patches for a single instrument ?

can you connect this to a midi keyboard? So you can use the midi keyboard instead of the tiny keyboard on the OP-1?
Also: this track reminds me of the louis vuitton cartoon video. Not sure if you know it, but it's really good. Also good job on the nice camera setup.
