Do you know why is done the operation from 2:50? TO KILL THE ROOSTERS! Why? Is not economicaly efficient to feed roosters when you have a egg farm. So KILL THEM ALL! They are gased or microwaved for 3 sec...Desgusting!
type in: undercover investigation at hy-line hatchery. this is what the Discovery channel conveniently left out - what happens to rooster chicks of egg laying breeds.
I have been watching How It's made on netflix and I saw the episode of the chick hatchery and I was HORRIFIED. I couldn't believe how they tossed them around like they were nothing. It's like they weren't living breathing creatures that feel pain and fear. It made me cry. I HATE crap like this!
Chickens are not people. The evolutionary strategy is different. When a human (or horse or chimp or whale) baby dies it's a big deal because they have very low rates of reproduction. Chickens have a much higher rate of mortality no matter what because their strategy is more quantity than quality. If chicks die in this process they probably would have died in other circumstances too.
@cephalo786 That being said, efforts should be made to reduce their suffering, by humanely culling males and raising the chicks in clean appropriate condition when they reach their destinations.
So inside their eggs they're penetrated and given some vaccine filth, then sprayed on them after birth. Oh and Discovery doc failed to show us the death bin/grinder for the male chicks. and slavery is supposedly banned?
I work at a hatchery and I can say that if you were to take the conveyer belts away then you would be adding on to the workers hours. You would up it by atleast 4 hours and I don't think any hard working hatchery worker would want that
@laydbackjson are you joking? Oh lord I hope you have some twisted sense of what is important. For one... "poor factory workers would have more hours.. there for more income... waaaaah poor babies.... we would have to carry the chicks to our work station ourselves.... that's too hard for us to do."
@laydbackjson secondly... THESE ARE NOT TRASH they are living breathing thinking creatures that that disgusting greedy industry callously throws away because it's not worth their time or precious money to make an effort on behalf of the beings that are taken advantage of. You know what I see when I watch vid's about hatchery's? A concentration camp.
Not all hatcheries treat the chicks this way. The key is to find a hatchery whose practices you agree with and buy only from them. It might be more expensive, but at least you can be sure there's no conveyor belts involved.
theyre very tough they arent hurt ive seen chicks fall from the top of my coop ramp and he/she was totally fine . yes just tossing them is a little messed up , but theyre tough.
well, you know what they say, you cant spell slaughter without laughter. you should probably be thankful they didn't show what happens with the unwanted male chicks.
Also, I wonder how much they get paid in those plants. And, did you notice that they are wearing ear protection? - is that from the sounds of the chicks or the machinery?
To all you crybabies, if you are so heartbroken over how these chicks are treated, then I guess that's up to you. I'm sure there are plenty more vids out there which would upset some if they saw how different things we take for granted are made.
The worst part about it is how far we've come from treating them like living beings. I'm a vegan, but don't have a problem with people eating meat as long as the animals/birds are treated humanely. There's nothing humane about this video. Bring back the family farm!
Agreed about the compassion, but I didn't think these chicks looked that badly mistreated. Still, they didn't show us what happens to the excess male chicks, which is supposed to be bad.
Too bad more homeowners don't keep a chicken or two themselves. It would protect rare breeds, help keep the kids in touch with food reality, and reduce demand for factory eggs.
We need to change zoning laws that interfere with healthier food, family and work.
Gryphon09: First of all, PETA is not the only animal organization out there. Many more and better animal rights organizations exist, so stop pretending that PETA is all we and the nonhuman animals have got. Second of all, male chicks (who are useless to the egg industry because surprise - they don't ovulate) are disposed of by the egg industry by being gassed, tossed into a grinder alive, and yes - tossed into plastic trash bags where they will suffocate.
@Psychoticpanda I guess none of u enjoy your roast chicken none of u see the way a mother hen is with her chicks they r not the gentlest of animals, they stand on them, kick them around, peck them n u are concerned about chicks being moved a on roller. Next time you are cooking a chicken or buying your fast food chicken think about your high set morals then. It is all part of the food chain and you and your friends and family are part of the demand for the supply so don't look down your noses
Wow, I've never seen such a huge operation! There is a DVD called Regarding Chickens, I think I like the small scale operations shown in that DVD a little better. But thanks for posting this video... very interesting.
The Discovery Channel should be ashamed of itself for pushing better treatment of pets and preservation of wildlife while ignoring or celebrating (as in this case) the widespread, systematic abuse. If any private individual treated a dog like these companies treat food animals, that person would be publicly humiliated, fined, and locked up.
... I especially love how this part skips over the fact that anesthesia isn't used to de-beak, the chicks do get caught in the machinery or fall down with the eggs, and the male chicks, injured chicks, and surplus chicks are suffocated alive in plastic bags. What makes these animals less deserving of proper treatment and freedom than the lions and zebras most of us will never even see?
Do you really think the people working in these hatcheries would go through the trouble of "suffocating chicks in plastic bags." They do all of this stuff for efficiency, and going through the trouble of putting animals in pain is not efficient. PETA's done their job and brainwashed you just fine..
i have a silkie baby chick thats about 2 days old. I'm ashamed to see how they're treated. Chickens are such intelligent animals, why on earth are tehey being thrown down those chutes like that with such little care ?.
oh come on now...the chicks dont know any better, like theyre longing for the life they once had. it is probly a better/safer beginning for them than they would face in a natural environment.
i love this. fantastic. it symbolizes everything about our current modern culture. see those fat laadies with the painted nails processing rivers of downy little chicks? wow.
uhmmm... do they know that chicks are actually LIVING creatures? it doesnt look like a hatchery it looks more like a factory thats producing candy or shoes or something =b
How can anyone find this funny? From the time the chicks are born they're treated horribly, not once did I see where they stop the conveyor at the feed trough.
They don't have to, they have special food stores in their body that they have from the egg so they don't have to eat for the first 72 hours of their life I think
@Fatal616, oh yeah, "concentration camps"… because the purpose of chicken farms is to exterminate all the chickens in the world, because of their considered racialy impurity, for they are unwanted for political and religious reasons… idiot!
Why the hell do the use that happy music? It just creates a scenario where this type of treatment with animal is ok, and it's not!

this is wrong on the HIGHEST levels.
1. many animals must be stuck on the floors or in between cracks of this factory dieing/dead.
2. many chicks must of went with the shells when they seperate the chicks. (you can tell their trying to jump out)
3. they are thrown into chutes like toys.
4. the workers dont care about them, if their in a bad mood im sure they just treat them worse
5. this factory has too many chicks im sure they wouldn't care if a few die.
