  • So if Wills and Kate expect a baby, and it is a boy, and if Wills is still based on Anglesey with the RAF, will we see, eventually, a new welsh born future Prince of Wales. Myself hope it happens, but I hope he doesn't have a gog accent though - nobody would be able to understand him, outside Gwynedd.

  • @yippitydodah agreed. owain glyndwr even did more for wales before he died than prince charles will EVER do for wales in his fucking life

  • Glyndwr is better than William Wallace

  • @glyndwr65

Thanks for uploading this documentary. Also thanks for the heads up on the upcoming BBC history of Wales documentary. I will keep my eyes peeled. It sounds right up my alley. Probably be near impossible to find over here. Maybe someone will (I hope) upload it after it makes it's spiffing debut. That would be fantastic. Thanks again!

  • People dont realise that even now, with the parliment and the prince of wales, we are all run by english. We should appoint our own new king.

  • hats off to the welsh dude the english are so smug

  • @2manynegativewaves

You contradict yourself. On one hand you say chill out mann. On the other you appear to be getting your jollies stirring up strife- shame on you.

What's wrong with a little hand wringing anyway, as a Scot you surely understand. Like you the Welsh people are now essentially completely conquered by the English. For God's sake Scotland had its 'pity-party' with Braveheart. Let the Welsh have their toothless bite at the English. It's harmless.

    THEFT!!!!!! RAPE!!!!!!!MURDER'nnnnn

And the english can't understand why the welsh or the scotts or the irish hate them!!!!

    LOL!!!!

  • @Gwenalltapowain Grow up! Everyone was busy slaughtering everyone else in those days. The invasions went both ways. Irish invading England and Wales and Scotland, English invading Wales,Welsh invading England, Scots invading England,English invading Scotland etc etc etbloomincettera :) Being part Scots, part Irish part Welsh and living in England I figured years ago its best to just chill the heck out and let history be just that, the past. The only "hate" comes from muppets like you and the bnp

  • Please STOP calling William Wallace Braveheart! Braveheart was the name given to Robert the Bruce, the true Savior of Scotland, not some Blue Painted Aussie Imposter.

  • @medievalgirl002 Finally someone on a youtube comment board who actually knows some accurate history!! thank you!

  • Good to see someone on a You Tube comment board that appreciates and values accurate History. Thank you! Seriously though, I think William Wallace is over hyped, I mean where are the blockbuster movies about Robert the Bruce? He is more equally deserving of praise and honour as Wallace, if not far moreso, because he made a far more significant contribution to the cause of Scottish freedom.

  • Does any one know what the verse on the grave stone of Rhys Gethin reads? I understand he was one of Owain Glyndwr's most loyal followers.

  • FREE CORNWALL YA BASS!

  • I'ts a real pity that the Welsh invented the long bow and showed the english how to use it otherwise englands history would have been very different Scotland would have seen to that! the only time Scotland were defeated is when the bowmen let loose but any time Scotland could neutralise the bowmen or the english were daft enough to fight without them and they were a couple of times then it was Victory to the Scots.

  • shitty frame rate, over modulated audio,.. thumbs fucking down.

  • @Polybun All this is true, but it's still an interesting and watchable documentary. Take it or leave it.

  • It's sad that the only way for Welsh people to find out about Glyndwr and Welsh medieval history in general is to go looking for it themselves. This stuff should be taught in Welsh schools and given a higher public profile. Unfortunately Welsh kids are only taught about English history and the English kings, and made to think of them as their own. In fact the only specifically Welsh history I was taught was simply about the Industrial Revolution and the coal mines.

  • @Glywysing942 Absolutely. How many people in Wales know about the Merthyr Rising, the Blue Books, the principality of the two Llywelyns and the writings of Aneurin and Taliesin? Effectively everything I know about Welsh history I have researched myself, while history lessons in school consisted of American and German history and ensuring we could recite which of Henry VIII's wives were divorced, beheaded or miraculously untouched. About time to get some Welsh history in the curriculum, IMO.

  • Braveheart was really historically incorrect. f they make a film about Owain Glyndwr I hope they get it right. Btw, Wallace was decended from a Welshman, his surname - Wallace (Wal-es - Wales), Wales is a Saxon word meaning foreigner.

  • @Megagremlyn Dont make a american bastart version of Owain Glyndwr!

  • @Megagremlyn you are partly correct it is wallish that means foreigner in saxon but obviously wales comes from that :D and cymry as it was origionally pronounced means brotherhood, as all welshmen saw eachother as brothers that would fight for the freedom of their country

  • The Welsh fought long and hard against the English and I respect that, I'm Scottish btw, I know some of you are all like Owain>Wallace and shite like that but they were both heroes of their respective countries, and you can say what you like about either of them but they bring pride to the people they fought for and thats all that matters.

  • It's a shame Owain was our last native Prince Of Wales. It would have been nice if the English allowed us to keep our native Prince tradition and not big ears who is an ENglish/German mongol!

  • @nrjelley You mean Mongrel, and Mongol is someone different entirely!

  • @medievalgirl002 yes I meant mongrel, my mistake I typed the comment late at night.

  • Actually Charles is not just a English/German Mongrel. He has the blood of the Scottish Kings, The Irish Kings from Richard Duke of York's Mother Anne Mortimer, and the Welsh Princes from Henry Tudor, as well as the ancient Saxon Kings from Empress Matilda, and the Kings of France, Spain and those of many other European royal families. So a mongrel many times over.

  • just watched the whole 8 parts and really enjoyed every one, learning about my welsh people!

  • thanks so much for swharing these docos!! wow what a guy

  • A film should be made! Another Braveheart but one where we look good :)

  • Great man

    He fought the english

  • @DublinaThe Am I wrong in thinking that The Mortimers and Henry Percy joined with Glendower against Henry at one point?

  • @medievalgirl002

    @medievalgirl002

I don't know but it sounds quite plausable.

In the words of the great Robin Williamson ' oh the tangles of it all '

  • Sehr interessant!

  • Fantastic...thanks for posting. Cymru am byth

  • Would love to see Huw Edwards present more programmes like this.

  • @TalaJenta Definitely! Huw Edwards should do more Welsh specific programmes. I'd love him to do a series on general Welsh history and another on Welsh culture.

  • Was that Welshman fly fishing (in the beginning)? Great video!!!! Too bad few people know so much about Owain Glyndwr. CYMRU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • C'MON HOGIA!

  • Once again Welsmen are sold out , this time by the NUM The millions they made off Welsmen and they killed our children of Aberfan How much longer will welshmen let these kind of people shit on us ? People of Wales should rise once more!

  • Glyndwr > Wallace

  • HEN WLAD FY NHADAU!

  • WOW - the tv program with me in!!! I've been looking for this for ages! I'm the girl by the fireplace in the banquet scene! Thank You so Much!

  • I'm related to Owain Glyndwr on my fathers side :) This video made me understand so much of my heritage that I knew nothing about.

    Thankyou so much :)

  • Are todays Irish Mortimers related to the Mortimers assigned to run Ireland from Trim Castle

  • kids nowadays cant be arsed to learn the welsh language unless their brought up with it when their born and fluent in it, i envy them, but u can tell that kids fluent in welsh are more patriotic in welsh pride where the others either want to english or are idiots

  • cer dy welu, hanner het

  • Surely Edward I only completed the last part of the Welsh conquest, namely the conquest of Gwynedd.

  • if it wasnt for mortimer Wales would have conqured england

  • this really helps with my homework

  • thank you for uploading this :)

  • Parodd y gwrthryfel am 9 mlynedd ac fe'i drechwyd heb fod angen i Loegr hyd yn oed ennill yr un frwydr. Dim yn gwmws yn destun chwedloniaeth!

  • glyndwr didnt desert anyone-he stepped up to the mark and fought ruthlesly for fifteen years for the total freedom of his country-he lost everything in the process but was never captured.he is a hero.anyone on here that tries to be a smarty pants and say that he deserted and left wales in the shit totally misses the point and is a pussy bitch.the most important legacy he left was that freedom and faith in your country is worth fighting and dying for

  • what else could he have done? The only other option was to have accepted the pardon offered by the English king...which Glyndwr never did.. He didn't desert anyone..there was nothing else he could have done. Hotspurs rashness cost the tri partate allies the campaign..if he'd have waited, as instructed, for Glyndwr to arrive with his army [they were in Carmarthen fighting english hired flemish mercenaries], the battle of shrewsbury may well have been won and not lost. That was the turning point

  • love the welsch .chiv

  • I know it is a difficult pill to swallow, but Glyndwr DID desert his people.

After he abandoned Wales as a ridiculous monk, Glyndwr KNEW the desperate hardship Wales was going through because of the rebellion and the sanctions imposed on the people.

What did Glyndwr do? Sweet F.A.!!! What a HERO. Now he takes all the glory.

How is all that going to look in a Hollywood film about him? It will damage Wales - AGAIN!!!

  • at least the welsh people were alowwed to soeak welsh and to what they wanted, hes done more for wales than anyone?

  • @advent8888888888

I object to the use of the word "legend".

Owain Glyndwr was an historical figure NOT a legend. The English tried hard to kill the Welsh language even punishing Welsh kids for using their language, never fortunately succeeding. I would love to claim him as an ancestor but can't. I am a patriotic Brit but know that the Saesneg stole Lloegr (England)from the Britons and then wanted to steal Cwmry (Wales) from them too and destroy yr hen iaith (the old language).

    Aled Owen

  • i have read his book the revolt of owain glyn dwr, its very interestin to see what wales was like back then, if u push people into a corner they are goin to fight back.

  • we came so close, we invaded England with ten thousand men! if we had just beaten Henry's army Glyndwr may well have ruled England and would have reclaimed the lost lands!

your legacy will live on forever

    fe godwn ni eto!

  • we were supposed to invade england with an army from chester and an army from hereford, mortimer from chester didnt wait an got hammered by the english, if he hadnt we would of probably won with the extra 15 000 men. the three of them were goin to share england,

  • Glyndwrs were Landed Gentry. How did they become Nobles? The betrayal and decapitation of Llewelyn. Landowner Glyndwr reaped the rewards in the Marcher system. He manipulated a deeply oppressed nation who were easily persuaded by HOPE but he left us to starve and die in torture, squalor and disease and fled away. He should have stood tall, taken the rap rather than ALL the glory. He ran whimpering in the guise of Franciscan monk. YOUR LEGACY LIVES. We are poor 600 years on

  • While William Wallace WAS a man of the people, Glyndwr was not. Glyndwr was ambitious and ENTIRELY content with oppressive English rule over Wales until it did not work for him.

Glyndwr wholly exploited the disaffected and yes, deserted them in our hour of need.

But do people want the truth??

  • Not really. You could argue that it was the Welsh people that exploited Glyndwr. A rebellion was going to happen in Wales sooner or later, and this was an opportunity for the Welsh since Glyndwr was an excellent military commander and strategist. I'm not denying that Glyndwr might have exploited the Welsh people, but I do want to point out that he didn't 'desert' them. He fought to the end- he only fled after the war had ended. He lost most of his family in the fighting and sacrificed a lot.

  • Llewelyn1282, what are you talking about man? "Abandoned Wales as a ridiculous monk', were did you get that from? Glyndwr was a product of his upbringing, like the aristocracy everywhere, except in his case when he was asked, he stepped up to the mark and fought. He lost his family and his birthright, he had a lot more to lose than most. What should he have done, turned on his own like Dafydd ap Gruffudd?

  • Unlike poor Wallace, Owain was NEVER betrayed by any of his countrymen...If Hotspur hadn't been defeated, the english would have been routed once and for all.

  • the welsh should have kept on having rebellion after rebellion like us irish

  • We could have but we do not have the stomach for cold blooded murder (including that of our own people) that the Irish have so plainly demonstrated over the last Century! The English eventually came to respect us - not for our pubs franchises but for our honour, integrity & hywl!

  • was this the only time when wales had a rebellion ?

  • No, but it was the last. The Normans and English had taken 200 years to conquer the Welsh princes, during which time there were various rebellions and attacks on various scales. It took Edward I 's huge castle building programme and his assassination of Prince Llewelyn in 1282 to conquer the Welsh.

  • @Glyndwr65 the English were not Normans - the English thought of themselves as a subjugated and occupied people, under foregin overlords who spoke a foreign language.

  • @TheBelovedButterfly To true, though this fact is hardly ever acknowledged.

  • No. Ask your grandfather who bought the guns off the traditional IRA when they gave up.

  • @irishbuy of course not ,they have been happening consistently in every century, the last official time the 'british government' sent troops in as part of martial law was in the nineteenth century martial law in south wales, then the 1980's etc etc

  • @irishbuy

Think of Rebecca's daughters in the 1840s.

  • Actually Scotsclaymore he was. His daughter married Edmund Mortimer, who was the brother in law of Hotspur and they had a plan to divide England between them with an enlarged Wales taking in the west midlands which would have returned

the boundaries of the Welsh kingdom of Powys of which Glyndwr was a decendant. The only reason the plan failed was because Hotspur was defeated at the battle of Shrewsbury on his way to join up with Glyndwr.

  • edmund mortimer wouldnt have kept his part of the bargain the english nobles wouldnt have allowed it anyway so he would have just went to war with wales if he became king

  • Glyndwr brought Henry to his knees. Glyndwr's rebellion lasted 15 years; it was a rebellion that started with a small, loyal band of unarmed freedom fighters in a conquered country full of English troops. Wallace's rebellion lasted 10 years max even though Wallace was better equipped and richer than Glyndwr, yet Wallace's rebellion was halted very suddenly with a costly defeat at Falkirk. Glyndwr fought for 15 years and came very close to bringing Henry down.

  • jesuis.well put .But the welsh served prince Hal later on in Agincourt.Funny old world we live in!!

  • you might want to read up on your history there jock

  • Very interesting, never heard of Owain before. Now I need to know more! :)

  • Dangos pa mor bwysig yw llwyddiant chwyldro.

  • ahem... the english were NEVER celts. english were anglo-saxons. so please.

us celts are of scotland, ireland and of course WALES my homeland.

i resent your comment although i'm quite understanding. please get your history right before trying to be a celt.

one of the reasons that america has your language is because you ANGLO-SAXONS or english had colonies in usa. which was eventually where independance day originated. independance from the united kingdom lead by who... ?? the english

  • the english come from near germany

  • we spoke a language similar to modern welsh. No way, man. You should know that the English were from Northern Europe and their language was Germanic. English is a fine fanguage with many dialects and forms and like all languages has changed over the years. Welsh has changed too. It is as difficult for a Welshman to read medieval or Old Welsh as it is for an Englishman toi read medieval or Old English.

    Aled

  • when i say we spoke a language similar to welsh i mean the celtic britons that lived in england before the germanic anglo saxons came and vikings, im from chester on the border and im sure im a good mix of celt, germanic heritage, so when i say we i could mean the celts.

which is what i was trying to suggest.

my brown curly hair explains some of it :)

  • OK I got what you mean now,. Yes, you are right the average Englishman and probably people living in other parts of the British Isles are a mixture of Celtic, Roman, Gemanic, French and Scandinavian peoples. After all the invasions and the mixing during the industrial revolution you would find it hard to find a pure anything. I am Anglo Welsh myself. I am proud of that.

    Aled

  • theres a video on you tube about the english bloodline and the welshs, there is a clear diffrence.

  • @scarff94 celtic britons didn't live in England before the anglo saxon because there was no England before the anglo saxons England is named after the angles.

  • Gwych cofio gwylio'r rhaglen yma, diddorol iawn, Pam nad oedd e wedi llwyddo :(

  • thanks for this - I hope you will put up some more?

  • Yes - the saga will continue as soon as I can upload! Thanks for your comment.

  • ahhh yes, i remember watching this, i've been trying to find it for ages!

    do you have the rest?!

    diolch!
