There's no reason that you cannot get cornrows but you should find someone who knows how to do your hair type. Be Certain that they do not pull too tight trying to get the braids to stay in

I know my technique for grabbing hair is wrong, but how do you prevent from running out of hair? When I do...or when I Try to do it, I always seem to run out, and my braid ends half way thru, lol!!

It sounds like you are grabbing too much as you add it into the braid. You should try grabbing a much smaller amount.

Yah, and it's also hard in that position, to braid coming down, because usually I end up having to grab, and pull hair into the braid, instead of just braiding down the roll( if you know what I mean), resulting in my braid ending too soon,
