@enochianmagic According to a popular etymology, its name is made up of: tin (pronounced "tain") which means "well" and Buktu, the name of an old Malian woman known for her honesty and who once upon a time lived in the region. Tuareg and other travelers would entrust this woman with any belongings for which they had no use on their return trip to the north.
@enochianmagic However, the French orientalist René Basset forwarded a more plausible etymology: in the Berber languages "buqt" means "far away", so "Tin-Buqt(u)" means a place almost at the other end of the world, i.e. the Sahara.
great song! and as someone wrote before....think about how many songs is in english about anything and something, if its swahili or swedish....here its about the music and its great!
Take imported religions away from Africa and you'll have a beautiful landscape, beautiful people with open minds. As long as their is Islam and Christianity in Africa, I fear the struggle ain't finished yet!
This song has nothing to do with Timbuktu. It is sang in Swahili, a language not spoken in Mali and is simply speaks of a mistreated boy demanding to be taken to his Dad.
In 2005 Sunni cleric Umara Dan-Maishiyya and his gang prevented the Shia of Sokoto, Nigeria, from praying in the central Mosque opposite the Sultan's palace. In the violence that issued at least 10 people died and a Shia seminar was destroyed. State governer Alu Magatarkardar Wamako pledged in his political mandate to limit what he called the spread of Shi'ism in Sokoto. On 18-07-2007 Sunni cleric Umara Dan-Maishiyya famous for his anti-Shia sermons was killed. Immediatly Sunni mob attacked Shia
Although commisioner of police on BBC Hausa service decleared that there was NO evidence to link the murder with the Shia, Magatakardar Wamako took the oppertunity to fullfill his pledge and ordered the security forces to expel the Shia out off Sokoto. A school was destroyed, a clinic and the living quarters of the Shia, about 100 people (only Shia) were arrested, and in the violence dozens of Shia children and women disappeared without a trace! Yes, it's Kerbela everywhere and Ashura everyday.

Doctor King'esi es un músico de Kenia, totalmente ajeno a la inmenso patrimonio cultural de Toumbouctou y no concuerda con el paisaje.
Doctor King'esi is a musician from Kenya, oblivious to the immense cultural heritage of Toumbouctou and is not consistent with the landscape.
