i dont think Beatty was suprised he lost. His movie had 12 nominations - and going into the best picture award it had lost in 8 - 2 categories to Chariots, 3 to Raiders and 2 to Golden Pond. It was 9 years since there was a best picture/director split so this was overdue. He has said since once the award for screenplay, editing and actress had gone to other best nominees he was sure one of them would win.
Raider's of the Lost Arc wasn't exactly art. It was a money maker from start to finish. There was nothing new about it. It was like dozens of other films produced when Spielberg and Lucas were kids. If there was anything that you could call innovative about it would be the special effects. The Academy made the right choice here. It was an amazing film
I think it's disingenuous to deprive great entertainments like Raiders of the Lost Ark of the "art" label simply because they're entertainments. Raiders of the Lost Ark wasn't innovative, but neither was Chariots of Fire, or anything else nominated that year, really. Both Raiders and Chariots, however, represent their types executed at the highest possible level. I'd have preferred "Raiders" but there's no shame with "Chariots" winning.
Also, if you believe Estelle Parsons, there's a more cynical reason why Reds didn't win- according to her, and I quote, "the Academy hates Warren Beatty."
David Puttnam tells the story that when CHARIOTS won for costume design, the third award of the evening - Steven Spielberg, who was sitting behind him, punched him and said "thats the key award - you are going to win"
@vadimzdonutube no, wrong...they are all different, completely...you can't separate 3 films like that under normal circumstances, but in the case of awards you just have to...basically, raiders was a fun ride and 'very' hollywood; reds was a deeper political 'serious' film....but as said here by others, chariots was inspirational, profound, entertaining and memorable :)
Who in their right mind would think that Chariots of Fire is better than Raiders of the Lost Ark? Most people don't even know or remember Chariots of FIre.
"Reds" was the best picture frontrunner, haven taken Best Director (which usually means you'll win best picture. Not always, but usually). Look at Warren Beatty- so disappointed, you can tell.
all films nominated were good, but Chariots of Fire was a true inspiration and quite profound and artisitic for most people, i'm glad it won, it deserved it.
Reds or Raiders should have one. Chariots is a good movie but not "Best picture" worthy (same for Driving Miss Daisy, a film i liked but was stunned that it won Best Picture).
Loretta Young, a real Movie Star, gave an interview after the Oscars saying she personally wanted Chariots of Fire to win the Oscar and when she tore open the envelope one notices a pause ....Miss Young felt she "willed" Chariots to win and wanted to be sure. It is a great great movie and I am glad it won in a year of outstanding films
At the time this seemed like a huge shock. However, Beatty subsequently said he was not suprised that the best picture award went to another film. REDS was hot favourite for best actress, costume design and original screenplay - when those awards went elsewhere, he said he was pretty sure it was not going to win for best picture.
Miss Young later commented that She wanted the film to win and felt she "willed the winner" and thus the pause between reading and announcing it. She had hoped she did not err in wanting it so much she would not read it correctly. A grand star.
I would've been one of those people who gasped so loudly when she said Chariots of Fire. I would've stormed the stage to see the card in the envelope myself. I would've sworn she made a mistake. It should've went to either Reds or Raiders of the Lost Ark.
@andtheawardgoestome because it had jane fonda in it, and last i checked films with traitors in it don't win best picture. anyway chariots of fire deserved it hands down
This was a VERY deserved win. Chariots of Fire is a beautiful movie. Reds is a piece of crap, a cheap propaganda, but all the others are great movies, especially Raiders of the Lost Ark which is a childhood favorite.

Also, I find it hilariously ironic that Warren Beatty went back to his seat instead of backstage. He wasn't going back on stage that night.

Think about it- do you really think a film about John Reed and Emma Goldber, released during the Reagan years, would win Best Picture?

@TheRealUnderherfeet Well, if they get it wrong, the people from Price-Waterhouse-Cooper will apparently come on stage and personally correctly.
