Without the Kwan soap opera, attention at last may fall on the skaters who actually finished in the top three at Nationals: Kimmie Meissner, 16, the youngest U.S. Olympian in Turin; Hughes, who was bumped from the team to make room for Kwan; and Sasha Cohen, 21, who'd finished higher than Kwan in the last two world championships and is a strong contender for gold.
1:30 Michelle entertains and reaches out to the audience.
I think that is a fair assessment of Michelle's skating. That's why I think she's more fit for ice shows rather than REAL athletic competition. There's no place for "emotional connections" in real competition. You are and should be judged on the athletic/artistic merit you show on ice, not if you can "emotionally connect" with the people watching by executing pretty but overdone and conservative moves.
Nancy seemed liked a Michelle kwan Hater...Don't blame michelle for anything that happens in the pro skating world...and clearly she isn't there for the price money...
@jaypz10 it's not that she's not forgiven.. it MIGHT have something to do with her husband being her agent - and the top guy at STARGAMES. He will always keep Nancy in the spotlight. End of story...
@MissGreenDay7 Because Kerrigan isn't a "threat" to fans of other skaters. Kwan, by contrast, is a "threat" to their wishful thinking that their favorite skater were as good, and as successful, as Kwan. They simply refuse to forgive her for being the legitimate gold standard.
@MissGreenDay7 Nancy Kerrigan didn't CHEAT! She earned her scores and her way onto the team..and even after a serious injury came closer to Olympic Gold than Kwan@!
@getrealandsee Did you even read my comment? I don't know what you think I said but I did not say that Nancy Kerrigan cheated. Why don't you take a break from youtube for a while.
@MissGreenDay7 I am so sorry...yes, I read your comment and my reference to Nancy's NOT cheating was simply stating that she was injured by a criminal..had trained all season and had already earned the right to go to the Olympics...she certainly would have medaled at Nats and guess if she hadn't that would have been the end of it. Kwan, PETITIONED for a spot she had no right to..that's all I was saying.
Yuna doesn't know when to peak. She gets really gung-ho in the grand prix and by Worlds she is plain tired. Frank thought Michelle that after her lost to Tara in Worlds 97 to listen to your body and peak at the right moment.
Saying Kwan stayed in partially for money is rediculous. Yes, there is some money in amatuer skating now, but not NEARLY as much as Kwan could have made by turning pro. Besides, by the 2002 Olympics, Kwan was already a multi-millionaire. Nancy's comments hold no merit.
I do agree with her however that Kwan staying amatuer hurt the professional world. But, oh well. Giving up Olympic eligibility is a big decision for every Olympic level skater, and no one has the right to make it for you.
Kwan is not about favoritism. Kwan is about her love for her sports. The same also applies to Sasha(iapologize for mentioning her name in here), Caroline, Carolina, Yu Na Kim, and many others. This is what I call, professional sportsmanship and Kwan should be praised instead of scorned.
It's not about winning the gold. It's about good sportsmanship and being a solid competitor. Michelle Kwan typifies the spirit of the Olympics. She inspired and motivated her competitors and now a whole new generation of skaters, look up to her.
Michelle Kwan IS golden. She doesn't need a medal to prove anything.

Pardon me for asking, but if Olympic medals are bunk, why bother competing for them? Michelle Kwan certainly didn't go to Torino for the pasta; she wanted a gold medal, man! She wanted it so badly, she was literally ready to bust a gut to get it!
@ZachsMind Break out the Pepto...Kwan SCREWED Emily out of her chance of a lifetime...she CRAPPED on the Olympic Creed....Good Sportsmanship??? OMG....you so can't be serious...
@ZachsMind "I wanted to be the Michael Jordan of my sport," she said. "I dreamed of being a legend." … But legends are not made by points alone, in the rink or on the basketball court. For figure skaters, the door to that mythic realm of eight-figure endorsement deals, of celebrity that transcends sports itself, opens only once every four years
@ZachsMind And Kwan knows this better than anyone. "Tothe public," she tells you, "the Olympics is the supreme of the supreme, and I don't believe you can ever truly be a legend without winning it."
Source: Mark Starr, Newsweek, February 18, 2002, p. 50.
Good Sportsmanship?....she SCREWED Emily Hughes, she crapped all over the Olympic Creed, and made a joke out of FS...a total embarrassment to the USFSA and ISU.
i know, without MK, I never watch figure skatign any more. I used to watch it only because of her. The olympic gold shoudl not define one's success. the American skaters are really weakening. None won a world gold. Skating is not as spotlighted as the past. yagudin, plushenko and Mk. amazing

@sweetinnocentgurl Of course she is in it for the MONEY...the MONEY...And Kwan knows this better than anyone. I can't believe Nancy said that! After Salt Lake Michelle was already a multi-millionaire, she could have just quit and done nothing with the rest of her life. She still competed because she loved to compete. To say that money was a motivating factor is quite rude. Now-a-days Michelle could do anything she wanted, including take it easy, instead she's about to get her masters degree and lord only knows what else she will accomplish.
I wouldn't mind seeing her compete again. Feels like we never got to say goodbye. The ladies field is so insanely tough this year but can't forget her. Mao and Yuna are only as good as her.
You are forgetting Michelle is 27 years old. She would be far past her best at this point. Already in 2005 at 24 she was falling well below her best, so imagine where she would be now at 27.
Yu Na is never healthy for Worlds. That is the only reason she hasnt won. She was the dominant skater in the GP two years in a row then was hurt for Worlds. Mao and Yu Na are both great but neither have brought their best to Worlds yet, which is why they arent as dominant and strong at Worlds as they should have been.
The new system wouldn't hurt Michelle. She could easily adapt her skating to increase the point value of her spins (she's an ambi-spinner anyway). Her jumps are so perfect, her GOE would be huge on everything. She just needs some harder footwork (which she could easily do.) The only reason it seems like the IJS would hurt her is cause she never had to make the change. She's talented enough to tweak her skating and get huge points and make everything a lvl 4.
What's Lund's problem with a male doing Swan Lake. He's so uptight. Does he know that a male Swan Lake (ballet) was done on Broadway and the director Matthew Bourne won two Tony Awards? Maybe he needs to get out more.
I miss her so much in this event it hurts...She ruled US ladies figure skating for almost a decade. It's still weird to not have her there. Nationals has lost a lot of it's appeal to me because of her absence. It'll never be the same...

i don't think michelle stayed in for the money...i mean she could've retired and stayed with champions on ice and still made great money.
The fact that she didnt compete much between 2002 and 2006 proves that she wasn't after the big pay...
