I can't sleep either. Always have a light on as well. I think I'm just afraid to fall asleep...It's really hard to explain. I used to read each night, now I just play piano or guitar in my room until I start to feel sleepy, normally it isn't until around 4 in the morning. -_-
I have trouble sleeping too and I was diagnosed with depression. I literally cannot make myself fall asleep until 2 am or later and there's nothing I can do about it. It's awful!
I sit up in my sleep too - often when I'm half-asleep and half-awake. It's rather odd, because I'm conscious of me sitting up and I know that I should be lying down, but it takes me a while to actually get around to it :P
It saddens me to see you suffer so ... I had a problem with sleep a few years back, went days without any, and months just getting a couple of hours a night, in my rocking chair, outdoors on my front porch. I hope you get better soon.
You need a better pillow. I recommend a hungarian goose pillow. And also get rid of that HP pillow case, you aren't 12 anymore. Also trying some white noise my help. But I can see some serious yoga in your future.
@beckie0 Because you've been getting contradictory statements from people (including me)of what was the best thing to do before going to bed, I asked one of my doctors (I have several) about it . He said he and other doctors have come to the conclustion that reading before bed is better than watching TV because the latter really is more stimulative. What I saw on TV was wrong, and I hope you'll please forgive me for suggesting it.
i also have been challenged by insomnia my whole life. first thing is that you should only sleep in your room. no reading or tv, etc. there are lots of things to try and lots of advice but my biggest suggestion is cover your clock. don't get hung up on the time, but make sure you wake every day at the same time. your body will get its rhythm back. but staring at the clock watching the minutes tick by creates anxiety. if you're up anyway, best not to use the time to stress more!
My understanding is that reading stimulates the brain, whereas watching TV (preferably something light and not dramatic in nature) relaxes it. You might keep doing what your doing (reading before bed) and if you find it's simply not working in causing you to fall asleep in a reasonable amount of time, you could try watching TV before bed instead.
See this is where I get confused - people telling me not to read - but telling me to watch tv - but lots of people are telling me to read and not watch tv as it gets my brain working etc.... Confused...
I heard on TV once that it's better not to read just before you go to bed, but just to relax by doing something like watching TV. You might try this to see if it helps.
In regard to your exams, you need take an attitude of firm determination with them, like your nation during World War II when it stood alone but was victorious in the end. Think of Winston Churchill's first speech to Parliament as Prime Minister on May 13, 1940:
"You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory," and, of course, your country prevailed.
Now you are taking antidepressants? I hope it helps; I suggested you look into that a year ago, and you got angry, etc. I'm sad to see you surfer. If you do nothing, probably nothing will change. But a good therapist, or medication, might help. No, it is not easy to find these. I've had bi-polar for years, and it took years to find some helpful medication, and even longer to find a good talk therapist.
Beckie, you're a wonderful gal, I wish you love and happiness for the New Year...!
I hope you realise that everyone watching and commenting this is seriously thinking "How could I help Becca?" But i guess we can't do much, not here in youtubeland. Only you know yourself, and you've probably already thought about all the possible and semi-possible ways to make things better.
Just please never give up. You really seem like the most likeliest person to eventually overcome whatever hardship life has to throw at you.
I feel for you so much Rebecca. I've watched every single video of yours now, I feel inspired after every single one of them. I know that sleeping is a difficult thing and that I probably have no experience of what your going through but... Please don't give up on yourself, the whole of youtube would be in mourning. I probably wouldn't of overcome everything at school(and that) if it wasn't for you. Ignore 'ex' as he is somewhat deranged for dumping you.
all in all, I think in the last six months, I've slept about twenty hours. You're not alone. I've got depression as well, but my antidepressants make me wide awake. I know exactly how you feel.
I think about everything thats happened during the day before I go to sleep..however thats the only way I CAN get to sleep. If I try think about nothing, I can't sleep. Its pretty annoying cause I worry about pointless things that I really could do without worrying about!
Beckie, I wish your life was just a tiny little bit easier on you. I wish you all the best.
For me it helps listening to people talking when I try to get asleep. Only slightly interesting talk or standup comedy I've heard multiple times. That way I can put my focus on listening instead of thinking. But I am sure what works is different for everybody.
The one thing i must say that i love about your videos, is that your personal, you do keep what happens and why things happen to yourself.. but you still tell the emotions.. if that makes sense :S
That's really tough! I really hope you can find something to ease your self to sleep! Have you ever tried guided relaxation meditation stuff? You can look them up on youtube, and I usually find them very calming!
I actually want to do something like this, as I suffer from insomnia and depression also. It's 6.34am and I've still not been to sleep, so I'm on my iPod trying to fall asleep.
Anyway thankyou for this video, it's really quite inspiring. :)
i will send good sleepy/happy thoughts your way, beckie! x and prayers for youuu:)
i'm sure things will look brighter in the New Year:) God loves you, and he would never EVER leave you in your time of need or any time for that matter! don't forget that! i'll send a Cindy-card soon:)
I have heard somewhere that when you are in deep sleep some of the dreams you have are of your worst fears. I dont find that hard to believe as i remember waking up at least once a night either sobbing or having a nightmare. I'm sorry you are having such a difficult time sleeping. I know i will never understand it, but i really wish i could do something for you. <3
(I read the description box) - sorry to hear about the depression - I have had strong experiences with it, and I can say that hang in there, it does get better. I never sleep until around 4 or 5am, no matter how little sleep I've had the night before - I can't shut off my thoughts either. Best of luck with everything :)
I can't sleep ethier to much stuff going on in the brain i understand like most sleeping is just putting your head on an pillow and closing your eyes it really not it's your brains shutting down all thoughts what i is falling asleep with the music of rain just light rain from this app i downloaded now most will say it's stupid but your ears are the last organs to switch off when asleep so maybe try listing to rain or other nature sounds <3 feel better becky <3
I had a friend who also had great trouble sleeping. They got told it could be because they tend to spend a lot of time on their bed during the day, studying, reading etc. By doing that, your brain no longer associates your bed with a place of sleep, but a place where it is actively learning or thinking. I dont know your full situation, but maybe you could try using your bed for sleep only. Dont do anything else there, then your brain will go back to seeing the bed as a place for sleep. Good Luck
well it looks like broken sleeping Dude, you are sleeping but in a broken up pattern, like Jim says if your get a chance to have a kip in the evenings, Take it Man, as long as you get some kip, that what counts, its how i survived doing 15Hr shifts :/
and in one part you look like your going to fall out of bed :P i went through a stage of doing that when i was your age, and until i started sleeping on ther floor, have slept in a bed for over 17 years now :)
My best friend went through this, she wasn't depressed just an insomniac, it was a horrible time. how can you look so pretty even when you've just woken up?!!
Being a non-expert who loves to give you all sorts of advice anyway, I'm at a loss. It seems like even when you are sleeping for short periods of time (say 5:10-5:25), you are talking or shouting. No wonder you had a fear of sleeping as a child.
Are you ever so exhausted after a night like this that the next night, or sometime during the next day, you drop off? Don't reject a 3pm nap if it overcomes you!
Ah dear, trying to sleep with a million things going through your mind. Annoying, right?
I have a little idea. Drawing from personal experience, I find myself sleeping better when I'm not in the same old room, same old bed, same old position. You know, getting bored of sleeping in the same place. Try perhaps taking your pillow down the other end of your bed, rearranging your room & moving your bed (if possible). Stuff like that tends to help me, try it if you're desperate :P Much loves Beckie! x
@jessiefails I'm the same sometimes. I won't be able to sleep in bed but if I'm a friend's house or on the sofa I can fall asleep easily, based on a different sleeping environment
becky, dont worry! I'm going through exactly the same.. im only getting like 3 hours of sleep a night.. and thats on and off. If you need anyone to talk to about it, im here :) Your not the only one. Maybe try reading for a bit? Or watching a dvd? What I tend to do is tidy my room.. then if that fails i read a book? Something to put your mind off things?:/. Hope this helps. xxxx
i have the same issue i find its best to focus on a story you create in your head or watch a movie of some kind and then go to sleep with it on or listen to music either the same song on repeat or shuffle
I can't sleep either. Always have a light on as well. I think I'm just afraid to fall asleep...It's really hard to explain. I used to read each night, now I just play piano or guitar in my room until I start to feel sleepy, normally it isn't until around 4 in the morning. -_-

I sleep better with mellow music playing. It overshadows outside noise from the street, etc.
What direction is your body (feet to head) pointing?
You might try sleeping with your head to the north or west.
East and south are the least restful directions for most people.
