This song is about the Vietnam war, Barney said so at the Troxy gig in london last week. I have always thought it was the ghost of a soldier who didn't realise he was dead that found his wife on the floor.
Amazing tune by THE best band on the planet ..... Ever!
@duboyduboy.Everyone has there own opinion of this song, the reference to the telegram some think he's dead, others it was a mistaken telegram and he got home to his wife who thought he was dead,i've seen comments this was about the falklands war, because of the time of release, which i dont see.Just enjoy it as a new order song and make your own ending
Of course its an Anti war song. Its about a solider with a young child and wife. He will never see them again, War creates widows and fatherless children.
If you listen to the opening lyric "ive just come from the land of the sun" (Japan) it is about a soldier coming home from ww2 not a anti-war song.i have followed new order from Joy division and this is one of my faves 2
@MrSka67 uhm well i mean it might be ww2 based but that doesn't make it anti-war? he's dead. he won't ever see his family again (or they won't see him.) it's pretty clearly not PRO-war, anyways.
If you listen the opening lyric is "ive just come from the land of the sun" (Japan) it is about a soldier coming home from ww2, not a anti-war song i have followed new order from Joy division and this is one of my faves 2
@MrSka67 i'm not slow minded or something and yes i definitely agree with you; but this thing kinda bugs me in a gothic/dark manner. Is this song other than about a soldier coming home from WW2 is also about a dead soldier's ghost coming home from WW2 and saw his wife with tears and holding a death notice telegram and have no idea that he was already dead? maybe you could help me debug this; thanks.
this song almost makes me cry it makes me think a lot about my familia and about all of those people in the war how much they must miss theirfamily and i hope everyone would support them they are just trying to protect us we wont forget 9/11
"this song almost makes me cry":{} It doesn't "almost" make me cry, for what it's worth.
" it makes me think a lot about my familia and about all of those people in the war how much they must miss their family" -yeah especially those in the invaded territory of Iraq, but also the "coalition forces" " and i hope everyone would support them they are just trying to protect us we wont forget 9/11" even though Iraq had nothing to do with nine eleven. right?
I 'll never ever forget both..... This amazing song and my endless love for you,,,Ricardo A. Scola. Love vigilants, reminds me that day when i saw you for the first time..............
@dragoon84 i dont think its anti war! i think its touhing and i have adoped this song for my current tour of afghanistan... i think its true and sad but thats what we feel
I believe it was 1986 or 7 when I saw New Order and Echo & The Bunnymen play on the same bill. NO was supporting Substance and Echo supporting Songs to Learn and Sing.
Ian Curtis played melodica on 'In A Lonely Place' and played it like an instrument was meant to be played. Ian was into Augustus Pablo, who was known for playing the melodica. That might be where the idea came from (to incorporate melodica into JD and hence NO).
It's a cool instrument. People often describe the sound as "haunting". I wouldn't disagree.
I could hardly hear from someone that Barney is great, it seems that all people find something wrong with his musical skills.. Why?, I think Barney does it great,
@Andres21479 I know your comment is a year old, haha, but I completely agree ! I often see a lot of negativity about him, but I think he's perfect the way he is ! :)
@Andres21479 PS~ "Barney" doesn't like to be called that. Haha. He's said that he doesn't like that nickname, but people seem to still call him that. Poor Bernard :'(
That's the beauty of New Order live. I've seen them several times and Bernard will forget a lyric or Hooky will miss a chord every once in a while. They are still one of the greatest bands of all time.
I love this song. Probably top 5 in my favorite songs of the 80s.
What happened at minute 1:57 to 2:00 in the song? It looks tome like he made a mistake ther. Understandable, I couldn't not even imagine doing this in front of thousands of people time after time and not making a mistake. :)
what's wrong with mistakes in front of a thousand crowd?? even the beatles, u2, pink floyd, did mistakes in live performance.. who the hell d'you think you are mr. perfect??
Du hade något vackert i mina öron.
Cette chanson est parfaite!!!Elle est jouée par des musiciens avec peu de technique mais tellement de style et de personnalité.C'est une gemme.Equivalent actuel??? pier
still a classic! My all time favorite band. BTW, isn't this the theme music one some cell phone add? I swear the guitar part is in a series of commercials somewhere.
PFD was released on DVD, but only to the Japanese market for some reason? (the UK had to make do with VHS tape). Don't know whether it's still available though?
His voice is assuring, always brings me back to a good place. Makes me proud to be a fan.
