I would argue that Derren Brown is a significant form of evolution of the TV magician, as he has shifted the misdirection totally from the performer and completely onto the participant.
I've gotta disagree, you never know when the next "Street Magic" will pop up. In 20 years, magic could be an entirely different animal in a way that nobody expects.
Magic needs to move away from the idea of the 'spectator' and more books need to concentrate on the spectator turning into a 'participant'. The real problem is the amount of crap magic that's about.
You know, I've always thought it's somewhat of a tragedy that people aren't more inclined to learn magic or at least to study how it's done. There are actual real world applications to some of it. What immediately comes to mind is possibly training soldiers escape artist techniques like houdini, and teaching them sleight of hand. These could easily benefit soldiers, and especially POW's, given the proper circumstances. Idk..Just my two cents. Something to think about, I suppose.
@arrghh0 I always wondered about that too, but for one reason or another I don't want soldiers to know magic. Also, I suppose magic just doesn't have that real world application that it might seem
@SeriouslyPissedOff things like misdirection has real world application. for your own entertainment though. not sure about military application.
I work as a cashier in a grocery store and people take out money when they are buying their groceries. ill misdirect their attention to the receipt and some forget all about the 60 bucks they took out. if i were a crook i could earn hundreds of dollars extra a day just knowing about misdirection and how to use it.
