I think that if the younger generation were to spend a day riding in this car, they would burn the car they are driving now. These cars were long distance cruisers. 4 hours behind the wheel of today's cars is long and tedious. 10 hours behind the wheel of this car BEGGED for 10 more.
I had a green 1978 Mercury Cougar 4 door that was built like the LTD 2. For a 351 Windsor the car was slow but when the car goes over bumps, you hardly feel it and it was very comfortable too! The car was dark green with light green interior.
These popular cars along with the 1977-79 Thunderbirds were big sellers for the Ford Motor Company and helped the corporation earn nearly 2 billion dollars per year. Too bad Ford along with GM can't develop winners like this today to "bail" the companies out of the financial mess they find themselves in.
units with the mercs and LTD2 behind from 1977 to '79. the LTD did good too because the general downsized first for '77. FYI - 77-79 t-birds were still heavier than early 70's LTD's...
Dude people are not buying cars period. thats what the retards in congress seemed to fail to understand. The bankers which have no restrictions placed on them fucked everything up. Hurt all car companies. Dont forget the fact that american companies have always had to fight an uphill battle against imports which have no tariffs on them and have the goverment payingthier employees retirement and health care.
Damn! I remember that commercial when it first aired. Mostly, because I kept wishing she'd swing by my house on one of her midnight rides. Looking back, it does kinda have a look of "cheap 70's porn" to it!
WOW! Cool commercial! This ad brings back memories, I really miss my 1979 Cougar XR-7. It was a High Gloss Deep Black, with Dove Grey Leather seats & half vinyl roof & pin stripes, power moonroof, cast aluminum turbine spoke wheels that had matching dove grey between spokes, power windows, seat, locks, trunk, antenna, am/fm w/ cassette & amp, cornering lamps, lighted key holes & visors, tachometer, with complete appearance package, loaded, loaded, loaded it was, damn!..wish I still had it.
Hi Jac2Mac, I remember my '79 Cougar's bells & whistles well....the mechanical chime only sounded at initial start-up of the engine, while the little red "fasten seatbelts" light turned-on, but I had the optional gauges with the tachometer. The buzzer sounded when the driver's door was open with key in the ignition or headlights were left on.
That doesn't make sense at all to use a seatbelt chime but a scary buzzer for the other functions. You would think the Cougar would use a chime for all 3 functions like the Chrysler Newport and Dodge St. Regis. Why was the chime only used for the seatbelt reminder?
....I don't know...maybe Ford thought it sounded "classy" to hear a chime at engine start-up lol. But yeah, if you left your lights on, or the key in the ignition & opened the driver's door, you were graced with the ugly "BUZZ" buzzer warning. Although these were nice & stylish, powerful rides, they were outdated, I think the 1st Ford rides to use this platform & design were the Torino & Elite in early 70's. The Lincoln Continental had all the "Bells & Whistles" though lol.
Were there any other cars of the late '70s and early '80s that were guilty of using a chime only for the seatbelt reminder but a scary buzzer for everything else?
I'm assuming its the same reason why they use different chimes for different things today. So that you would know that your keys were still in the ignition (or your door wasn't shut all the way), rather than your seat belt wasn't on.
I have an 79 XR-7 Fully loaded. One of these days will get it on YouTube!

Great disco music from the 70's, the sounds of the Midnight cat. MEOW! And the voiceover was the late Ernie Anderson.

Did the 1979 Mercury Cougar XR-7 come with a chime or a buzzer?
Jac2Mac 3 years ago
They came with a chime, I remember that well & it wasn't an electronic chime, it was mechanical. I owned a 79 for a long time.
chuckycheese22 3 years ago
Was the chime for all three functions?
