slipersox, There is nothing stopping it from taking off vertically with a full rated load but vertical take off uses an vast amount of fuel compared to a running launch, so if they can then they prefer that way, plus its a lot safer.

harriers can take of vertically aas well as land vertically so why doesnt it here or does taking off vertically use more fuel the a normally takeoff

too much fuel and payload. it doesn't have enough thrust to lift the the weight vertically under exhaust only. so they slant the nozzles to 45 degrees for short takeoff. surprised there wasn't a ramp like the british ships.

we have ski ramps because 3/4 if our seabourne aircraft are harriers and helo's, and our carriers are a hell of a lot shorter than american carriers, they mostly use longer runways and steam driven catapults to launch their aircraft. which consists of mostly hawkeye radar planes and f/a 18 hornets and super hornets, our ski ramp designs are much better suited for our needs mainly to launch harriers laden with fuel and munitions, after the sortie they land vertically

the vertical landing is usually used to land on aircraft carriers AFTER the flight, the reasson being is that when it takes of normally, it is usually laden with fuel and munitions, it would be too much strain on the engine and it would go nowhere, plus the wing is a dead weight, something like 4 tonnes of dead weight, when youre hovering thats a lot or extra weight

yes, also it can carry more ordinants by a rolling take off. The British invented a ski jump at the end of their carriers for that very reason. Spain Italy Taiwan adopted the ski jump for their Harriers, the US did'nt.
