@FranceAlways what have the french made that was useful? pretty sure that if i could think of something then it would be useful for you guys.... *cough* eating dog teqniques *cough*
@stangfever04 I, like you am a proud westerner. But that's a terrible misinterpretation, yeah they aren't much now, but France had a 100 year war with britain. More than anything any other countries could fathom.
@FranceAlways nice comment jackwagon, the only thing france is best at is bailing out when the going gets tough.they're the first ones followed by russia and germany.
@mwnt9999 Whats your problem, cant we all get along? So what,, and America invented FLIGHT. And we have much better planes than the harrier. Who cares.
slipersox, There is nothing stopping it from taking off vertically with a full rated load but vertical take off uses an vast amount of fuel compared to a running launch, so if they can then they prefer that way, plus its a lot safer.
too much fuel and payload. it doesn't have enough thrust to lift the the weight vertically under exhaust only. so they slant the nozzles to 45 degrees for short takeoff. surprised there wasn't a ramp like the british ships.
we have ski ramps because 3/4 if our seabourne aircraft are harriers and helo's, and our carriers are a hell of a lot shorter than american carriers, they mostly use longer runways and steam driven catapults to launch their aircraft. which consists of mostly hawkeye radar planes and f/a 18 hornets and super hornets, our ski ramp designs are much better suited for our needs mainly to launch harriers laden with fuel and munitions, after the sortie they land vertically
@slipersox It is my belief that a. as snipeyou mentioned U.S.S. Bataan has a longer flightdeck and b. US harriers have more power then British harriers making them supperior.
the vertical landing is usually used to land on aircraft carriers AFTER the flight, the reasson being is that when it takes of normally, it is usually laden with fuel and munitions, it would be too much strain on the engine and it would go nowhere, plus the wing is a dead weight, something like 4 tonnes of dead weight, when youre hovering thats a lot or extra weight
yes, also it can carry more ordinants by a rolling take off. The British invented a ski jump at the end of their carriers for that very reason. Spain Italy Taiwan adopted the ski jump for their Harriers, the US did'nt.

@Livercool92 Airlplanes were invented by americans, nice try brits!! "oh but we made the harrier" woopidiy doo.
snerjeck 1 year ago 3
@snerjeck airplanes weren't invented by americans. americans were the first to achieve flight, but they did not invent the airplane.
ironmaiden5671 1 year ago
@snerjeck add: we made it better:
AIM 120, M61 vulcan plus supercritical composite wings.
alas, same story with the merlin engine:
Yanks made full mass productioon at less cost and with more refined tolerances and significant improvement in machining.

harriers can take of vertically aas well as land vertically so why doesnt it here or does taking off vertically use more fuel the a normally takeoff
