@guyontheinternet111 THIS is TRUE have the DVD watch it at least once a month :) Kid plays the stuff to the T and with some of his own flair !!! Just shmerders it !!!!
Wow, that's pretty awesome.I remember when I saw Doyle Bramhall with Eric Clapton a while ago, on the Me and Mr. Johnson tour. (Billy Preston was with him too, RIP) I've been a fan ever since. It's strange to see a left handed guitar player play a left handed guitar with the strings upside down. At that show he also had a left handed Stratocaster with a right handed neck with the strings upside down. That really threw me....
When you hear a video with such a crappy audio quality and you still get to decode that freaking amazing tone is when you witness the greatest combination of all.... talent+gear... equals Real Tone... holy Shaitza!!! EPIC!
Does anyone have the rest of this show? I'm pretty sure there is no DVD of this but if there is puh-lease let us all know where we can get a copy. This guy just is amazing.
All of these comparisons to guitarists past and present mean nothing. The question you want to ask yourself is: Do I like this music? If not, move on. If you do like it, then support the artist! With that said, I'd like to say Doyle Bramhall II is AWESOME!!
there actually are some unique tonal differences with the pick-ups being upside down. fender even released a hendrix strat that had the pick-ups in backwards. I imagine he is using the leftie because doyle is left handed and it is easier to play it..but it staying acurate to what some of the tonal characteristics of hendrix
Yes, well this is Branhall doing a Hendrix copy thing, the same way millions of others have done before, SRV being one of them, and none of 'em REALLY fit to grovel at Jimi's musical feet...let's call a spade a spade-Jimi wrote the book, and these types have torn a page out and read a bit of it-enjoyable, some of it, but they are copyists-
Absolutely right...Couldn't agree with you more. I love Doyle and SRV,etc. But you are correct...they are sons and extensions of the one and only Jimi...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
whatever. I hate to even get into this but they're all their own people and we need not compare them. TECHNICALLY speaking, Doyle's chops spin circles around Jimi. Jimi sucked TECHNICALLY.. but that doesn't mean Jimi was bad...I agree, he was a pioneer. But Elvis and Buddy Holly and Jerry Lee lewis Never get compared to each other...I wonder why?
Elvis, Buddy and Jerry came up approx. the same time, and the lines of influence were blurred, nevermind the fact that Elvis played 'voice', Jerry Lee played piano, and Buddy played guitar. Here, these copyists followed the object of their affection maaaaaaaaaany yrs. later. I assume you live in Topeka, Ks.? Bramhall is as close TECHNICALLY to Jimi as you are to Andy Mckee...
Two different style's of music and he probably couldn't play my stuff just as I could play his. all I'm saying is that just cause the guys plays the kind of thing he plays doesn't mean he should automatically be thrown into a "Jimi follower" category. That's unjust. Proves me right everyone has a closed mind since my original comment has been thumbed down. Same people that want to keep hearing fucking freebird.
bramhall has great feel. jimi wasn't about lead guitar. he was about crafting his music. yeah, he hit wrong stuff, but had hands that still made it flow. srv borrowed, but he had his way of crafting. jimi borrowed from buddy guy. when you play, try to just let it flow. dig the vibe
This is great but it is very heavily reminiscent of Machine Gun by Jimi Hendrix and the Band of Gypsys. That's not a bad thing, but it just sounds so similar.
Actually, I think It's an original UniVox Uni-Vibe, If you can see his Pedalboard at all, Theres a black and chrome expression pedal coming off the board. It seems to be the expression pedal for the original Uni Vibe. And it's not a wah because he keeps it at the other end.
This definitely IS the Mini Deja-Vibe by Fulltone. If you go to the Fulltone website, there is a link to this exact video as a demo of their pedal. Go see for yourself.
Not to take a thing away from Mr. Bramhall but no it fucking isn't...very good player but that sound is single coil pickups, a uni-vibe clone, and bunch of tubes on the verge of melting
i think your missing the point. ive heard him play through many different amps, and many different guitars, and guess what? its always the Doyle sound.
Not missing the point at all. I've been playing for about 30 years. There's an amount of truth in that (most) players have an voice. The best players have their own voice which is why so many people here are saying "sounds like Jimi". I don't think Doyle sounds like Jimi but it's very easy to hear why others are making the point. All that aside...
Clicking on three or four other of Doyle's links on the right will bring up clips where his tone is very noticeably different from the tone in this clip. The tone in this clip is nothing original. Jimi's 'Machine Gun' is mentioned and Trower has built a career on the Strat-Vibe-Marshall sound.
Again, not taking anything away from how great Doyle sounds here but that sound is very distinct and it has almost nothing to do with the player.
. . .then the band drops and he solos. . . brushes. . .bass. . .2nd solo~ great bass great guitar~what a great band~ the great Melvoin sisters~Susannah and Wendy and the fabulous, Lisa Coleman~Part I & II ~Beautiful!
Anyone who doubts Doyle's skills should watch him play on the Roger Waters "In the Flesh" DVD. Emotion and skill all in one. It's fantastic.

Fine. Just fucking fine. With a '64 Strat... I cannot wait to see Doyle back at Antones.
sofserv84 2 years ago
Im not quite sure if that is the 64' strat
Cause Doyle himself has stated that he bought that guitar in 2000.
So either this video has the wrong year, or it must be another guitar.
It looks more browner too, than the strat he uses now, which is more brown/yellow -orange then black :)
LeifJohan 2 years ago
I think that might be the same strat he used in the 2007 crossroads when he played with clapton. but it has wayyyy more paint worn off of it.

why is he playing a left handed guitar, left handed, stung upside down? Sounds a little counter-productive.
Obviously he sounds fine, but why not just go ahead and play the right handed guitar upside down?
pedru32 3 years ago
He says he finds it easier to bend the thinner strings that way. It allows him to do powerful bends with ease.

There are many "technical" players, but few with the soul and emotion that Doyle puts forth. And his singing is just as good.

Doyle is using the experimental model...I think he was the very first person to use it...and I think they also sent onr to Robin Trower.
These were made well ahead before they sold them to the public...only certain Artist got to check them out and give their feed back to Fultone...
