@nonefour Head on crashes are sudden stops which can cause belts to break or your head to quickly go forwards and hit the steering wheel or dash. Flips are better because the cars rolling slows it down whereas head on hits at Daytona/Dega can be about 150-200 mph. It used to confuse me, too. 3 forever!!!
own your absolutely right it could have actually still happened , soem of the tracks had some non safer barier walls and jeff gordon hit both of those hard
I am happy we at least have these videos so we can remember Dale. A lot of those older original drivers have very few videos. 7X champion forever in our hearts
@Legometallica09 I was being sarcastic, and the bodies of those car are light but amazingly strong metals, for it to get fucked that far into the front block means he hit it HARD. At least 100mph, probably more.
The only reason the crash years before did not get him was he saw that coming a few split seconds sooner, and he was younger and could brace better.
I used to study motor-vehicle collisions, and the one thing I learned is the smallest crash can kill someone easier than a big one.
my friend was at the Daytona 500 in 2001 and will never forget the silence on the whole track as rescue teams were using the jaws of life to open up Dale's car to get him out. She and every die-hard Earnhardt fan cried their hearts out when they heard that he did not survive the crash. I was at work when a customer said that he died and I refuse to believe it. Nascar lost a great driver that day. Dale Earnhardt made Nascar what it is today. Thanks#3: "Imtimidator."
An opinion this time! Your rehab must be going well. Instead of wishing for my murder because you didn't think Earnhardt drove recklessly, I am now just an asshole and a dick head.
Congratulations on your success, and God speed towards a full recovery.
I was at that race, I was 16 years old and when I saw that I thought he was dead. I couldn't believe he died at Daytona that wreck just didn't look that bad, I'll alway's remember, and miss you dale.
I miss Dale. The only thing is, if he hadn't died in '01 Dale, or someone else, would eventfully die because it took that crash to make NASCAR safer (like the COT)
@ownwar8 To be honest, I think Earnhardt would be livid over the changes that have been made to the cars. I love that we have the HANS device and the safer barriers at tracks (I honestly think they should be all the way around the track, and not just the corners), but the new cars and restrictions on them really cripple true racing. It's made it a complete borefest, and that's something Earnhardt spoke out about a lot when he was alive.
But in the end, it is no less a tragedy. We all sacrifice safety for spur of the moment comfort, it is innately human, it could happen to any of us. We feel immortal, a race car driver by definition feels death proof. It is a strength and weakness.
As for driving recklessly, all drivers do, it's racing and not a drivers test. He was not killed in a an instance of recklessness but a routine incidental bump were a car on the outside drove him into the wall..
Before Earnhardt widows blocked my post for speaking candidly, I was saying the tragedy could have been prevented if Earnhardt took certain safety precautions. He didn't.
In the Daytona 500, Earnhardt drove recklessly the last six laps by forcing Marlin to the apron and grass. On the last lap, Marlin had a fender on him and that was that.
I'm not saying the way Earnhardt drove was wrong. As long as he was taking risks like he did, he should have protected himself with the right gear.
Yea, in hindsight everyone thinks that someone should have made him wear a better seat belt and a close faced helmet. I am only saying we are all guilty like Dale.
there are a lot of things that could have meant earnhardts survival, but no one cared. just like how we drive cars running on gasoline. no one cares anymore.
im probably wrong with this, but i think the reason he died in the daytona crash was becuase it was completely head on. this was at a little bit of an angle.
i agree. i also believe that if schrader's car wasn't there. we would still be watching him win races today. kenny's car changed the whole angle of the crash so he hit nearly straight on. not kenny's fault by any means of course. all just a tragic event. love ya Dale
There's a chance he would've lived, but I doubt he would still be driving to this day. He was already thinking about retiring in a couple of years and already had his replacement(Jeff Burton) picked out.
No, he was going 150mph+ Into a wall headon. His helmet was the old fashioned ones with no face cover. The seatbelt snapped. He hit his face on the wheel. Go figure.

July 28, 1996 Talladega Alabama Earnhardt's worst crash happening at near 200 M.P.H. Makes me wonder how he survived this one too. That kind of wreck is what we fear at every race, the cars are losing energy parts flying off of them they're coming to a stop. But that sudden stop head on into the wall thats a driver's worst nightmare.
um no... the one where he got burned he didnt turn all the way over, he was on top of bill elliot tho, and it happened at that very same spot this one did
I remember this race well. The 1996 Diehard 500. Got delayed til Monday due to Rain. Race had a lot of Wrecks, took a lot of contenders out early and this one happened pretty late in the going from the lead. I remember seeing the replay from the view this clip shows and thinking the worst when they played the slow motion of the roof impact. He was the points leader I believe up until one week after this too.
see what happend at daytona.. dale's seatbelt broke when his car hit the wall and he didn't have a full face mask and his face hit the steering wheel and so did his body.. if his seatbelt didn't break then he would still be racing and winning
I remember that crash, didn't see it live, but saw replay of the race at like 2 AM, can't believe he only broke his collarbone on that. Dale struggled for I think a season as he was still getting over that crash, but came back with avengence. Dale was the man, RIP.
easily, when he hit the wall at Daytona he went from about 185 mph in forward motion to 0 mph in forward motion with lack of restraint on his head and neck, his brain basically hit his scull and bounced around, thus killing him. In this wreck he hit the wall rather hard, but not head on an,d the tumble helped bleed off speed, personally i would much rather be in a wreck like this, than a head on impact into the wall.
In this wreck, he did head towards and hit the wall extremely hard, but his car bounced off the wall and flipped over in this wreck, so the car was taking most of the wreck impact. I still think Dale was really lucky that he survived, since he got hit in the roof. At Daytona, he just came to a sudden stop and when that happens, the driver is thrown forward and will most likely hit their head on something in the car.
guys what happend on the last earnhardt race was during the caution lap before the last lap or a few to the last i forgot what it was but nascar drivers loosen there seat belts on the caution laps to get comfortable unfortunatly earnhardt forgot to tighten his belts before they went green and thats what happend. RIP Dale Earnhardt Senior. Best Nascar driver ever. 3
There was a joke amongst the drivers after this that Schrader stepped on the accelerator when he saw the 3 on it's side directly in front of him. But all in all, this was a pretty hard lick.

The facts are, Earnhardt hardly ever wrecked. When he did, he would wreck in a way that left him with a car to finish the race in. Wrecks like this one and the one at Daytona are more the product of restrictor plates, and not the norm for any driver. Dale Earnhardt's left lap belt broke at Daytona. That's the reason he died in a relatively minor accident. I know that the hits are a lot harder than they look. It was none the less, a minor impact. A headache and a few bruises would be acceptable. For a restrictor plate race accident, It would not even be worth mentioning. This wreck however, Earnhardt gets hit directly above his head. Causing the roof to be pushed down to the door, breaking his collar bone. Notice the lack of a window opening.
The broken lap-belt was the cause of his death. It did not inflict the blow that killed him, but it was the reason he received that blow in the first place. I understand the Earnhardt Report goes out of its way to say the lap-belt was not the cause of his death. I know why they did this, and I understand. No, he did not have a broken neck. He died from a blunt force blow to the back of his head, resulting in basilar skull fracture. The muscles in his neck were not even bruised, in the autopsy.
Im sorry but did you happen to see the pictures of his car from after the race? Or do you know anyone in the earnhardt family or anything about what REALLY happened?
@nonefour Head on crashes are sudden stops which can cause belts to break or your head to quickly go forwards and hit the steering wheel or dash.
