  • Um, those are not five foot bike lanes. They are one and a half feet at best. I would not ride in them. The exceptions to the statute requiring you to use the bike ribbon apply.

  • Riding in bike lanes like that one is dangerous due to the fact that motorists tend to turn and not tend to look for cyclists..causing them to be hit. Riding on the white line is unsafe cause people will try to pass you unsafely. Riding in the lane prevents all the above and your most visible.

  • Both the state vehicle code and the municipal code require that cyclists stay within the bicycle lane where it is provided, except where conditions make it hazardous. Only in the last few years did the state Dept. of Trans. adopt guidelines defining what a safe bicycle lane is. But they're only guidelines and design engineers will ignore them at will. So, irrespective of how "safe" the lane is, you have to stay in it or risk citation and end up debating the matter in front of a judge.

  • They do this in the uk - most bike lanes are so small that u can only just fit in it. I always ride ON the line when I use them - most people give u more room.
