The Vatican's spokesman, Father Federico Lombardi, said the report was "so incredible that we cannot comment on it".

"It seems to me something that is so far from reality that I don't even want to address it," Father Lombardi said. "It seems an incredible story and I don't want to comment."

He did not deny the existence of the document to AFP, but added that it was "devoid of reality".

The Vatican has reportedly opened an investigation into the claims.

The report was written in German, apparently to limit the number of people within the Vatican who would understand it if it was inadvertently leaked.

It warns of a "Mordkomplott" – death plot – against Benedict.

The story was broken on Friday by an Italian daily, Il Fatto Quotidiano, with the headline "Plot against the Pope – he will die within 12 months".

I dont think the roman catholic clergy would do that, considering that most people dont know of Malachy's prophecy so that wouldnt authenticate much to them. Plus why would they be trying to authenticate a vision from a Christian? He was a Christian right? for Malachy's vision...since he predicted 112 popes from his lifetime to the end of the world, can't you just see if he's already gotten the first 110 right????? We don't really know whether or not the Roman Catholic clergy has been fulfilling Malachy's prophecies on purpose in order to authenticate the authority of their church. But it could be that Malachy's prophecies are really being fulfilled because God is fulfilling them, regardless of what the Catholic clergy do when the elect the new popes.

If you really believe that there will be an end times and end of the world, then it is inevitable that there will actually be an end to it. Theirs 2 prophecies fulfilled right their : ) And when you do stop and think about it, our religion is nuts! It is crazy in the eyes of mere man. I only say that because I have never experienced someone give a true prophecy in my lifetime, and I was raised in the belief that those things ended when the Bible became complete. However I do believe God can still use men to prophecy if He chooses to, but I don't think He will on the end times. He's given us enough information on when it's near, and it most certainly is! Just watch the news! : )
