  • I'm confused....

Why would you need to take 19 or more pictures to capture the full dynamic range of a scene ??

Surely something like 5 would do it ?? Most Dslr's have around 6 stops of dynamic range in them so to take 5 pictures would cover the entire dynamic range of the human eye ??

I can't see why you'd need 19 frames each with a tiny variation on EV between each one ??

Most HDR books tell you this.

  • @Jez2008UK

Sorry, forgot to be precise. 5 would definitely cover the entire range, but 7 and 9 would be overkill (my camera can do 7 and 9).

Quite often just 3 bracketed images would be enough....

  • What plans do you have to include cameras like the NEX and alpha Sony systems?

  • This is mostly for canon users nikon don't ne'er this from nikon d200..d300s..d700..d3..d3s..d3x...they all do that automatically..for me it's a waste of money for canon users..it's a gold mine and add nikon d7000..which I hate that camera for messing out of aeb. And they melted to 3..cheers

  • Hi,,,, My usual HDR practice is keep decreasing the shutter speed and looking at the histogram until no back tone in the image.

Can I use this Control to just change the shutter speed remotely?

    Pls advise..

    Thanks in advance :)

  • @paulhung2000 yes

  • Ah yes. Had to do the math in my head.

So if the scene base exposure is 1/8 for example

    1,1/2,1/4,1/8,1/15,1/30,1/60,1,125,1/250

And I want 9 shots each with the above exposures then I have to set the camera at 1/15 not 1/8

  • @qc2e No. You don't set the camera. The promote control ignores the camera. It controls the camera. What you can do is set the camera to Aperture Priority to see where the middle exposure would be so that when you switch the camera to Manual mode you then know what mid value the Promote Control should be set to. Camera has to be in Manual Mode, but the Promote Control does NOT read metering data from the camera itself. Download the manual from their site and read it before you buy.

  • Can you control the amount of fstops above and below the mid, or does it unfortunately shoot the same amount above and below ?

If so maybe they would do a firmware upgrade.

I sent promote a request ticket.

    Hopefull

  • @qc2e You can't think of it like AEB. The camera has to be set to full manual so there is no "mid" per se like with Aperture Priority. You determine exposure. So you are determining how many shots to take. 3, 5, 7, ...... 33, 35, 37 shots... whatever. It will take an odd number of shots. You determine the range. It starts with fastest shutter speeds first and ends on slowest shutter speeds. The LCD shows you fastest, mid, longest shutter speeds as you change the settings.

  • I noticed the Promote takes the various HDR exposures from fast to slowest shutter ( longest exposure ) . Can you reverse the setting so it takes the slowest exposures first ?

I prefer to look at my HDR thumbnails in bridge etc. from light to dark.

  • @qc2e No.

  • How can I make this work with Nikon D5000

  • @Jennesser

    In short...

    1. D90 in manual exposure mode

    2. AEB turned OFF

    3. Make sure D90 EV steps have been changed to 1/3rd steps instead of 1/2 steps

    4. Auto-focus turned OFF and switch any onboard lens switch from AF to MF

You'll be pleased with the results if you make that adjustment.

  • @Jennesser The D90 supports 1/3rd steps. I'm not talking about AEB here. I'm talking about the standard D90 settings where you can make the camera adjust stops in 1/3rd or 1/2 stop jumps. If your camera is set to 1/2 it will not play nicely with the Promote Control. The D90 supports 1/3rd steps. It works. Just read your Nikon manual and follow the directions.

The Promote Control manual explains that your camera needs to be set for 1/3rd stops to work correctly as well.

  • @Jennesser

@checkpete I don't work for the company. I created these videos to post on my blog hdriblog

Contact Promote Systems to address cameras supported (they are listed, but they don't update their site with new models right away so ask).

  • does someone know if this would work with a d300S?

    Thank you.

  • Yes, it will happily work with a D90.

  • So beautiful... I want this more than any other accessory, although it seems a bit expensive, and I'm not sure it will work on my D90 (the capabilities of which would be wonderfully expanded).

So... will this work on a D90?
