  • I google translated koninginnedag. lol.

  • I know what you should name you're new book: The Fault in our Stars.

    Great title right?

  • By the time the very first second of the video had passed, you had already greeted us and were well into your first question... that is very impressive.

  • You are utterly amazing. The Vlogbrothers and Nerdfighteria make me believe in a better world. Thank you for being made of awesome and love. DFTBA

  • If they ever make a movie of one of your books, I wish to act in it! Plus, it would be good to have a nerdfighter in the cast, no?

  • Koninginnedag! i love the transcriber.

  • what did he say in german?

  • @punkisnotdead41 that was dutch ^^

and i think he said something like 'good day'

  • @Regenschein123 he said something that sounded like queensday in dutch. Dutch is a really difficult language because of all the g´s :)

  • guys, the title is The Fault in our Stars.

    shhhhhhhh, dont tell john ;)

  • cigarette butts are not vegetables, but the nicotine they contain is useful for killing aphids if poked into the soil around your plants. :)

  • Dear Nerdfighters from the past.

    (Spoilers coming)

It's called The Fault in Our Stars

    Best wishes. CB

  • Hey, i have an idea, the title of your book should be acronymed to TFiOS. Just a thought.

  • Henry looks like a tinier version of a kid I know...

John? Your son is going to be SO HANDSOME as an adolescent. Trust me

  • watching some old videos and once again we got distracted. i think we only made it a few chapters into Gatsby and only 2 videos

  • Aww...

    Henry is sooo cute!!!

    (pause at :59 or 1:00)

  • John, my pizza shirt related problems are BIG. Do not undermine them.

  • ''Asked the Identity Thief.''

    Fucking lol.

  • Wait, who the eff is Hank?

  • Your next book should be called "The Title of My New Book"

  • Do you grow pizzas in your backyard?

  • Most of my English teachers think it's important to uncover little things about books just cause. It's annoying, I want to direct them to this video.

  • Well, now that pizza is a vegetable, I would say that it is very likely that you do indeed have a prodigious vegetable garden.

  • PLEASE BE MY ENGLISH TEACHER. PLEASE.

  • SPF 30 isn't strong enough for me .....

My fair skin is a fan of SPF 50.

  • I wish John taught my English class :( whatever, my teacher is pretty cool too.

  • Data built his daughter....

  • i want the shirt hank was wearing yesturday :)

    HUMPY HANG!!

your books do change me. looking for alaska is my favorite book in the whole world! my sister is attempting to write a book but she doesnt know what her own chars are thinking. isnt an author suppose to know that??

  • id love to be a part of the nerdfighter blubing book club but i have a long list of books that i want to read and right now im stuck on Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder, it was sugjested to me and its REALLY slow but kinda getting better. anyone ever read it?

  • I can't even express how much I want a Looking For Alaska movie.

  • @franinconverse I can't even express how much I want a GOOD Looking For Alaska movie.

  • @franinconverse I've already determined what Alaska sounds, and looks like and the environment of the novel. I would honestly hate it if it was turn into a movie because my reading experience of the book would never be the same

  • @MyInterwebs Well, that's what happened to most people when Peter Jackson's LoTR trilogy came out... And it was totally worth it...

  • @thatwhichisgiven What's worse is that I would still watch it because I'm like a huge John Green fan and a nerdfighter. So there would be no skipping it, even if I don't want to watch it.

  • i lost you after HAnkin

  • According to Wikapedia data "constructed" his daughter. Does that count as reproduction? Juliana Soong couldn't have children so Data and his 5+ siblings were created. Does that make Juliana capable of reproduction? Is construction the same as reproduction? Food for thought.

  • French the Llama! Henry's puff levels are extremely high! So cute!

  • i found the vlogbrothers almost 2 years ago now while i was trying to do a project on The Great Gatsby and i was running out of ideas and things to go off of but John you saved my life!!!!!! :)

  • Your books certainly helped me.

  • SPF 30? Try 45... :)

  • @JakesOtherChannel Hank is a rare small yellow bird native to the jungles of the Yucatan.

  • Who the Warner-Chilcott is Hank?

  • Can i just say, when you said that we are your biggest inspiration, i almost teared up. I think that is the first time a person that i am a fan of said that their "fans" were their biggest inspiration, and meant it whole heartedly. Unless you are going on a promotional tour soon, then you are a great liar ;)

  • So I went to type in the pizza shirt address, but put /awesome. I thought it was a bit silly, then I realized Pizza John shirts are full of aweosome and win.

  • <3 this one..just love it

  • Oh my gosh!!! The word blurb!!! My blog uses blurbs as quotes.

  • i love question tuesdays! ^-^

  • I want him as my English teacher :/

  • What could you do with a poe head?

  • Wish my English teacher taught that way. Having to figure out what the heck a writer means in blah book at blah point just... annoys me. However, thinking about why what the author is saying is important and how we could use that in our own lives... sounds more appealing to me.

  • has anyone ever told you that you would be an excellent english teacher? if not: YOU WOULD BE AN EXCELLENT ENGLISH TEACHER.

  • 1:56 - Look very closely...HE BLINKS. O_O

  • Vegetable: an edible plant or part of a plant other than a sweet fruit or seed. This typically means the leaf, stem, or root of a plant.

Cigarette: a small roll of finely cut tobacco leaves wrapped in a cylinder of thin paper for smoking.

Both tobacco leaves AND paper come from plants! And, if in fact the butt has a filter, filters are made from cellulose, also a plant part. Edible... err.... maybe(?)

So technically cigarette butts ARE vegetables. John, you have a vegetable garden :D

  • @thedude346supporter He may technically have vegetables, but not technically a vegetable GARDEN. You missed the technicality of the word "garden." ;D

I keep wanting to type it like "techincality." WHUYU CAN I NOT TYUPE RIGHT>/?!

  • People, you need to stop being all like "oh, the torture" . I'm in middle school and I'm super excited about my new book: The Great Gatsby

  • @GinoftheWind Actually, i have two friends with ADHD and he reminded me quite a bit of them, but i now realise t's because of the quick switching of themes and clipping which, added to the fast speaking gives of the same effect, but he does it purposly to make the video interesting or to "share the awesome" whilst my friends do it because they can't help it..anyways, sorry if i offended you oh wise one

  • I love what you said about teachers. I have taken two woman's study classes, Woman's Philosophy and Woman's Literature. Both classes were taught by men.

They would always asked, "What does the author mean by this?" I would always answer the question "wrong" because my interpretation of the text was always different from theirs. I wonder why... maybe because men and woman don't always think alike and a man teaching woman how to understand other woman is just weird. Sorry, I needed to vent.

  • I think you should go over the literary lenses one day so people will stop asking ignorant questions like "When my teacher says.... do you actually mean that?" because that happens to be only ONE literary lens that it can be looked through. PLEASE EDUCATE THESE PEOPLE!!

  • the Great Gatsby is one of my favorites :D

  • I want him to be my English teacher.

  • as soon as I get Youth Allowance, I'm gonna get a Pizza John Shirt.

  • Nerdfighters... type "great gatsby NES" into a google search and the first link at greatgatsbygame will be a cool game... I Stumbled apon this :-)

  • Is it bad that I read Mr. Blue before I read The Great Gatsby?

  • dear john, i just had my first kiss...ya that wasnt a question but all my friends are away so i had to tell someone. and for some reason i thought of you. nerdfighterlike ftw!!!!! also i had to thank you for any boy related advice you've given to this shy, nerdy girl usually found in a library. i kissed a boy! dftba.

  • and how fo you pronounce your wife's name

  • okay so two questions that are kinda into oneish, whatever, can ur wife be in a videi

  • Funnily enough, I started reading The Great Gatsby last night without even knowing about the book club... Yay, coincidences!

  • dear john,

you said you were here to solve our problems--well, t-shirt related ones. so if you've got the time between book titles, paula deen, let it snow, and everything else in the world, could you please restock the giant squid of anger shirts?

    best wishes!

  • John you'd make an awesome English teacher. If only you could do an online course through video.

  • Not to be a stick in the mud - teachers *have* to say "The Author Meant" because that's what's on the exam.

  • i can honestly careless about implied meanings. it is up to the viewer or reader to impose their feelings about how they feel about the piece.

  • You're so much more interesting than Hank. Thoroughly enjoyable...

  • I think the best part of watching your videos is watching you thoroughly enjoy yourself. no matter what your talking about you light up and I know that your doing what your supposed to do. you inspire me. cheers.

  • i read Gatsby for my english class, most students hated it, I LOVED IT... btw don't just watch the movie, if you do make sure its not the Paul Rudd version.

  • benign dictatorship IS an oxymoron. That's why there's the Evil Overlord List.

  • there are feet in the swedish edition too xD

  • what would you do if you found out you had a mental illness and all of nedfighteria was in your imagination....your life is a lie

  • How can we inspire you enough to get back to five videos a week (if not seven)? O.O

  • The Great Gatsby? TL;DR

    :P

  • 0:56- Ha ha! A tram bell! Amsterdam is so awesome.

  • I love The Great Gatsby. One of the best books I read for high school.

  • You should call your new book "Untitled."

  • Will you make a video for the blurbing book club like you did Catcher in the Rye?

  • sorry for the double post, script blocker problem...

  • Halfway through Gatsby. Having trouble with visions of Robert Redford overlaying the scenes with Gatsby (yes, I am that old), and with a pleasant distaste for where the book is going.

But the words alone will make me go back for a second time just to list some of the phrases that I want to be able to reproduce (sorry, 'french the llama' is being pushed down the TDL).

Can't imagine reading this as a teenager, the character studies would not have meant as much.

    thanx hank

  • Dear Jonh, you have gone back on your word and forgot to say 'french the llama', instead, you said a common youtube troll sentence :A: ~Nerdfighters

  • I had to read the great gadsby to my brother so he could do a school paper on it. The funny part is that my brother was 17 at the time and I was 13. Man my brother is stupid.

  • How do I join this Nerdfighter Blurbing Book Club? Will it be done through youtube or another Nerdfighter website?

  • I love the Great Gatsby. I also love the spin-off fake NES game someone made of it. Obviously, I like the book more, but the game is very addicting, and has quite catchy music.

  • We're doing critical reading in English right now. My teacher doesn't value my opinion very much unless it matches hers.

  • I have to read Great Gatsby for AP Lit this summer! Huzzah!

  • Sorry but I am not reading that book I am reading the first Harry Potter book.

  • You... You keep staring at me. It's creepy...

  • I know it's an American Classic:

BUT I HAAAATED THE GREAT GATSBY. :( I'll attempt it with the vlogbrothers, but I don't expect to be impressed! Brahh brd

  • gutenberg. net. au/ebooks02/0200041. txt

Public domain in the UK. Never read it (or most Classic American literature, Of Mice and Men is far as English schools get to.) I am going to now through.

  • you are speaking so quickly :P

  • Love the Great Gatsby!!!

  • HENRY!!!!!!!

no hank already has with his 7 tips

  • HENRY!!!!!!!

  • I love The Great Gatsby! :] Good choice! I shall read it again.

  • most of the books where looking for Alaska.

  • When John was talking about critical reading and whether authors intend symbolism, it reminded me of an article about Hemingway that I read once. The article claimed that true writers "exhale symbolism and metaphors," which I thought was a really cool way to put it. It shows that authors are thinking deeply about these questions regarding life, which translates into their works and allows us to think about them also. Anyway, I always love these question videos.

  • i made my boyfriend drive me to the library today and i got my copy of The Great Gatsby, and also a copy of The Catcher in the Rye and 13 Little Blue envelopes. It wasn't until i reached the checkout desk that i realized i was reading all of the blurbing book club books, at the same time. Thank you for subliminally influencing my library picks this week :D

  • You are SO right! My thoughts exactly: Apply reading to your life. That may sound nerdy, but we are nerdfighteria. If it has to be classic AMERICAN literature, I say Looking For Alaska. Otherwise, Hunchback of Notre Dame, 1984, or Don Quixote.

  • Next book should be Catch 22! Its on my summer reading list!

  • Where do you go to talk about the Great Gatsby?

  • Vegetable: an edible plant or part of a plant other than a sweet fruit or seed. This typically means the leaf, stem, or root of a plant.

Cigarette: a small roll of finely cut tobacco leaves wrapped in a cylinder of thin paper for smoking.

Both tobacco leaves AND paper come from plants! And, if in fact the butt has a filter, filters are made from cellulose, also a plant part. Edible... err.... maybe(?)

So technically cigarette butts ARE vegetables. John, you have a vegetable garden :D

  • Dear John,

How do you feel about Ayn Rand and her philosophy/books?

    Love,

    Tory

  • @parejj not particularly. That is, I read it as an American -- but I come from a totally different part of America (and from a different time) and am unfamiliar with most of the place names -- but I had no problem with it. It was about a set of fictional characters, for the most part, and didn't engage much with the wider world of then-current events. (That being said, I, personally, thought the book utterly dull and dreary. But then, I like happy stories.)

  • Man, I missed a bunch of videos and I thought I'd be OK but I can't resist going back to the last video to see what the other brother said etc.

So now I'm watching the videos in reverse order D:

  • is that dirt on your right shoulder of your shirt?

  • just finished reading the Great Gatsby - it is awesome! :)

  • SPF 30 and The Great Gatsby, two of my favorite things! I am so excited!

  • the great gatspy is the book for this summer? that's my summer reading assignment for IB lit!! guess i'll start on that soon then :)

  • This is so great! Who else has to read Great Gatsby for school this summer?!

  • I love The Great Gatsby! Excellent choice, old sport! ;)

  • i'm sorry. i hate gatsby. never gonna like it. actually, i'm not sorry that i hate it. i'm sorry if you are upset over the fact i hate it.

  • i watch this, then i see demon hank. thanks vlogbrothers. xP

  • "Still Not Totally Decided, Believe Or Not" Is An Awesome Title For A Book

  • @TheArmandoRomeroShow in your pants.

  • @LPSland4444 Oh That Cracked Me Up

  • @TheArmandoRomeroShow Much like "Ask to the Identity Thief' is a brilliant name for a hospital.

  • we actually read the great gatsby next year....maybe i'll read it this summer and get ahead of the game........or just watch your videos ;D

  • I wish to be part of the blurbing bookclub for The Great Gatsby... but I don't know how... Can you help me?

  • @figmom same here...if you find out please help me!!!

  • (The chair was blue) "Okay class by this the author means that he was abused as a child." what the author acctually meant (The chair was blue)

  • THANK YOU for choosing the Great Gatsby!

I'm so in love with that book. My class was doing it in English this past January, and I ATE IT FOR BREAKFAST for about a month. Whenever my sister and I took breaks from studying for midterms, we would bake brownies and get into heated discussions about what a crazy bitch Daisy was and how Nick and Jordan were such BAMFs.

My love for you and Hank just grows stronger with every video. <3

I can't wait to see what nerdfighteria has to say about this book!

  • the great gatsby is. brilliant. that book <3

  • was hoping you'd say the book I'm reading, Naked Lunch. Way cooler than the great gatsby

  • I just wrote a class test where we had to retell the fireworks prank in Looking for Alaska from Lara's point of view, then we had to "speculate why John Green chose Miles as the narrator". Suddenly I noticed that you actually remind me of my (great) English-teacher. :D

By the way, I got an A. You're my hero :D

  • Koninginnedag is awesome ;)

  • @capperann: I just saw your reply and don't know how to tag you back: basically, that teacher was the worst I've ever had; we didn't get any of the critical thinking or explanations of the slang or understanding of what was going on (my teacher would sit at the back of the room and watch us read). I was also in class that shouldn't have been a university prep class because all we ever did was presentations and not everyone had to do all of them. So I basically associate everything to that.

  • Is anyone else worried that the advert on the video is for bras?

  • When will you restock the Tetris Nerd shirt??? All you have left is XL or women's shirts :(

  • Hooray - I'll read it - just read chapter 1 in eBook form ~ 26/193 13% of the book ^__^ I've never really read any great USA literature~ will be exciting ~ Some words I didn't know: privy - in the know of something secret feigned - made up story or excuse (feigned sleep to get off class) epigram - witicism, witty saying/poem (neat/concice) supercilious - disdain, contempt (super, sillious) libel - (lie-bl) - defemating publishment intimation (to give) - give an indication of something
  • Do all Americans speak this fast?

  • @BarryMLove Only if we feel like it.

  • woah! John, I feel so proud to watch these kind of videos like at the end - about the critical appreciation jazz about authors, and then say eff yeah I'm a nerdfighter!

  • Oh man. I really don't think I can get myself to read the great gatsby again . . even for this. lol

  • Speaking of reading im currently on page 111 of looking for Alaska. I suspect, actually I know the climax is coming very soon...

  • I have to read it next year in english class...but i think i'll read it now. :)

  • I got a copy of the book :) I'm excited!

  • so do u think they would make a movie of looking for alaska?

  • John I just finished Will Grayson and I adored it!

I was just wondering what are some of your favorite books,

I'd like to get my hands on some of them...in your pants ;D

    Thanks dftba!

  • I JUST read the Great Gatsby, John! Lalkghalkhdlkhg

  • Thats my stick figure nerdfighter. Couldn't make a better one. Dont judge me.

  • @AsphodelsAce, Of course we do! We have feelings too! That rhymed...

  • when you were talking about robot hank's ability to reproduce, i thought you were going to say "because he has a dong"

  • John. You are truly amazing.

  • I can't eat pizza, I'm gluten and lactose intolerant.

  • I answered a questionaire today and it asked whether i had a role model and i also know this sounds cheesy but you john, are my role model. In your videos and in your vlogging you have changed my life and inspired me to accept myself for who i am and...well...i want to be you when i grow up....well i still want to be female. But yeah other than that, you :) thanks DFTBA

  • spf 100+ .....yes it exists...trust me im ginger.

  • @AliooR Me also

  • @AliooR awesome xD

  • @AliooR where can i get it?

  • @AliooR GINGER NERDFIGHTERS UNITE!!!!!!!!!

  • @AliooR maybe now that you know that you can stop looking up spf 100+, and maybe buy a soul

  • I really like that the Nerdfighter Blurbing Book Club is back :) Every summer my mom tries to ship me out of the house as soon as she can for as long as she can. She kind of hates the thought of a three month break of the living hell that is middle school. But having 2 weeks to read a book will make the book one of my prorities and spending time on the Nerdfighters Blurbing Book Club will be a good alternative to living hell number 2... Summer camp.

  • 133000th view, aww yeah :D

  • @MrSamueelll wait wait wait... I'm the 133000th viewer...

  • @jellydude7 :O Get out of my head :O:O:O:O

  • why can't we read some great CANADIAN literature? :D

  • I've already read The Great Gatsby....... you know, I loved that book. I loved it so much so that I didn't really notice how sad it was until months after I finished it. XD

  • Henry is adorable!

  • D'oh! I'm already in the middle of 3-4 books. But I guess another one couldn't hurt. Unless I threw it in the air and headed it like a football.....

  • Hey John, thanks for reducing literature to didacticism.

  • come one, dude, breathe once in a while, ok?
