c3po and r2d2 lived with uncle owen, his wife, and his grandfather for years (episode 2) so how is it that when they buy them back (ep 4) that he doesn't recognize them?

R2's memory is still intact, but Organa orders c3po's (the protocol droid) memory to be erased in spin-off ep III. why just c3po's? I don't know. Plus I kind of remember r2 making a few comments in the trilogy about obi-wan & stuff that show he still remembers stuff, but the comments are lost on c3po because he's been wiped
always thought these two aged extremely badly between eps 3 and 4.
