Not if it falls to the bottom. The sides are too narrow and they are slippery. Also, if it hasn't got many dead flies already caught there will be a digestive liquid to drown in. I have also heard that the fumes down there are toxic too. Its a smart plant and very effective at catching larger flies.
aha thats the same pitcher plant I have! the Leucophylla. Its still a baby though, it has 2 pitchers and 1 sprout so far with the pitchers being about 6 inches
@OwnNewWay the flower is almost 2 feet above the leaves-making the insects safe! and since it flowers in spring, the pitchers are all dead, and it grows new ones AFTER it flowers
This plant secretes a scent that attracts bugs, and the secretion also paralyzes them to fall. I've collected some on a sheet of wax paper, fried it, scraped off the chips, and smoked it. I know what it feels like to be temporarily paralyzed from these things. You know?
Actually it a mixture of digestive enzymes and water. While you could consider it acid because it has a low PH that actually comes from the poor environment in which they thrive. The moss has a natural ph of 3-5 I believe. Anyway, the plants do create their own digestive enzymes in the water. Its a vile mixture.
oh no its not. Cobra lilly's are completely diffrent. They have a closed top with small opening underneath where there is a platform. The plant is a tube that twists as it grows and the whole appearance looks very Cobra snake like. Also they are green. I don't why I bother replying as the comment is clearly by someone who has not seen either Leucophylla (as in the video here) or a Cobra lilly close up.
Wierd, Sorry I guess I was confused, but there is no need to be rude. I was just commenting. I have two degrees in Floral Design, and in Greenhouse Management, and what I ordered all the time in Floral was Cobra Lilies, and that is what I got, The Pitcher Plant. Wierd, how they had them Labeled wrong. Cause I just did a google search on Cobra Lily, and your completely right. I do apologize, but next time you dont need to be a smart ass about the whole thing.
OK, sorry, didn't mean to be rude but your comment was very short, blunt and incorrect. My excuse --- It was late Sunday night,I was tired and a wee bit tipsy from a whiskey and therefore consequently short on patience. I do get a lot of stupid, abusive comments here and elsewhere. I'm sorry for being a 'smart' ass when yours was just an honest mistake.
Correction, this is a pitcher plant. It is a Sarracenia leucophylla; which happens to be a species of pitcher plant. The cobra lily is a species of pitcher plant too, and is a close cousin to Sarracenia which are commonly known as the American Pitcher plants. I have been studying these carnivorous plants for years and have one of them at my house. This is just to you know.
Yep, but they can buzz for quite a while sometimes if there is enough bodies in there to stand on, rather than drowning in the digestive juices. Nice. If a Hornet wasp gets in there and finds something to stand on then they can chew a hole to get out. Then the plant becomes a sort of insect amusement park. Get a free drink, get drunk (it does drug them), fall in, climb out through the hole, and start all over again.
Actually both videos were shot and edited quite quickly. The venus fly trap was just an experiment to see if I could create a time lapse video without a time lapse function on my camera. I could, but I had to take clip every minute for two hours. Not so bad on a nice day.
The sarracenia was also just an experiment. I had lots of plants and there was a lot of action going on around me. These plants are very good at catching flies. The problem was to capture them doing it. I hand held the camera and ran over to a plant with a likely customer at the bar. I wasn't sure if a hand held camera in close up would be watchable.
For both videos I could do better and planned to have another go, but so far I've not had the time to get back to it. You know how it is. Unfortunately, whilst procrastinating, my greenhouse was destroyed in a roof avalanche and many plants have suffered or have been lost due to the cold, -18C, but that's another story.
your a dumbass... if your just gona say that its gay then why would you even comment it, why would you even watch it. obviously your not mature enough to understand this awesome video.

They grow seedpods--they're their OWN plant! lol
totodile493 2 years ago
They live in bogs where there isn't a ton of nutrients available, so they get some from insects. And i'm sure not all will get trapped.

Now, this is interesting. I am into carnivorous plants. Will be raising some flytraps. Hopefully..
