The reason the horn is heard here more than other stations is because there is a crossing just south of it. All trains are required to blow the horn in the pattern of "long, long, short, long" before going over a crossing.
Thanks for confirming the specifics of that policy. I assumed the crossing at Old New York Avenue was what dictated the practice. My first trip via Amtrak was this past September, so I'm not up on the "Am-tricks" of the trade.
All trains are "required" lol. More often than not you'll see that rule broken... by those dirt crossings, but the biggies normally they do it.
