VW iPod Adapter

Only place I can info on this adapter, I have a 2008 Passat with the thing in the glove box. I don't own an ipod, but wanted to get one just to leave in the car and load up with music? Is it even worth it or should I spend the money on a completely new head unit? If anyone know please email me! THANKS! =D

I had it installed by the VW Dealer. As far as I am aware it plugs into the back and then they just run the iPod cable to the glove box.

Thanks mate. I bought the same jack in your video. Does it plug behind the actual radio deck? Do you have to take out the glove box to install it?

MrBoombuster123 - not really fake, that's the way the adapter connects. The head unit is actually not geared for iPod connectivity so they emulate a cd stacker.

if you look on the stereo screen it says CD at the top. its all a fake.

@MrBoombuster123 I have this stereo in my Golf, its not FAKE at all, the ipod connection says CD but god knows why. It also wont display track names which is irritating, but does anyone know if this stereo can have an MDI (USB connection) instead of the ipod? id rather plug my phone in it to be honest.

No had to pay extra, was $400AUD. However I recently replaced the head unit for an Eclipse so the Adapter is up for grabs $100 and I can ship it anywhere in Australia...

From my point of view the Dension Gateway is the better choice. I got it runnin in my passat 3C with a RCD300, works perfect.

My parents have a Passat that has the same CD player in it, but we don't have the iPod dock. I noticed that even when you were playing song from the iPod the machine was acting as if you were playing CD's, so how do you switch to different albums, artists etc on the stereo. Do you need to remove all the CD's in order to use the iPod? Can you switch from iPod to CD easily? Why doesn't the display on the radio show the name of teh currently playing track instead of Track 01?

The iPod adapter replaced the CD shuttle, to switch between CD and iPod is just a matter of pressing the CD button twice. You then cycle through the sources.

I dont use this unit anymore, installed an Eclipse AVN 726... much better than the stock unit

I just got a new car & I specified the iPod interface expecting it to work like the SD Card with artists/track names etc. Considering the price I had to pay, I find it very unacceptable that VW offers this as an interface - it's wasted money

I suspect the reason these adapters don't show artist/track names is because it plugs into the CD changer interface on the back of the radio. Since the CD changer doesn't provide the capability for artist/track names, the iPod adapter won't either. Basically, this adapter is translating iPod remote control to VW CD changer.

And likewise, probably the reason you can't navigate by album/artist is that without a display of album/artist names, it would be almost unusable.

That makes sense to me, but to be real, COME ON, for two hundred dollars, you would think they would design a quality interface for it and allow it to link into an Aux input, not the generic CD input..... sheesh!!

Yeah I agree, it kinda sucks. You expect this from 3rd party adapters that don't have a choice but to work with whatever interface the radio has, but VW designed the damned radio *and* iPod adapter. You'd think they'd work better together, unless the iPod adapter was an afterthought and was never envisioned when the radio was designed? FWIW, I paid about $150 for the Dice Electronics adapter instead. Best I can tell it's a better choice, unless you just hafta have that VW logo on your iPod. :-)

I just got one of these adpaters and find it really annoying how you can't choose the Artist or Songs. Can only choose playlists... Anyone know how to fix it or ammend it??? Or a double back flip to pike followed by a 180 split?

Hi there, is this the ipod adapter supplied by volkswagen? The functionality seems pretty good, just like a CD stacker, the only other thing I'd look for is track names.

I agree, to be honest, this works great compared to other vehicles in its class.... Others just provide AUX in.
