A few mistakes, #1 with that thick of line never cut the tag end that close because it will get tighter and tag will slip threw. #2 when using crimps its only one pinch because the metal will weaken when folded several times and it'll fail. #3 the length doesn't matter that much so no need to shorten your rig make it longer for a better bite and work on a different casting technique
@jasong2xaccount I agree on the part about the shortened rig but different strokes for different folks. What has worked for some may not work for others...until it does actually work.
i would recommend afw surflon 90lb steel leader no longer than 8 inches cause all that extra line cuts down on your distance but now you have to use a fixed weight rig with the hook no farther away than 6 inches
I am kind of new to fishing, been catching some croaker, pin fish, little fish ect. what do you think i sholud use? i fish off the dock at Merchants lane it NC Carolina beach..any tips for those fish there?
@camrion Well about last week i was fishing with some freinds and the negibors, then all of a sudden a HUGE fish was hooked on my line, i had him for about 10 seconds then the line snapped cause i wasent smart enough to release the drag:( my ffreinds and the negibors say that it was a red drum, and its also happened to my freinds, same fish same thing. So i want to know, how to get that fish now, its makin me angry and i cant catch it! i even tried useing live bait(finger mullet)
@Scotty2asian ride down to fort fisher and fish right next to the rocks on the surf. use fresh mullet you can get it at carolina beach bait and tackle
thus making releasing the fish easier and unharming the drum. The big hooks are because the lips of the drum are pretty big and it has a huge mouth. Also, bait wise - I love using spot heads. I know menhaden, blue, and pinfish heads are good too. especially crap works really well.
Former owner of the 'drumslayer16' screen name here. It had been a while since i got on and i forgot my password and shit haha so now im Cult4d5. Thanks for the feedback you guys! Um as far using braid for main line, I personally dont recommend it for casting, just if it blows up, it blows up like a mother fucker! I prefer circle hooks because sometimes red drum dont sit there and eat before they take off, and the circle hook is designed to catch in the corner of the fishes mouth
He's using such heavy line for the LEADER. That's what's going to take the majority of the beating, so it's gotta be heavy duty. The actual line can be 30-50 lb test. Personally, I'd go with a 130 lb cable leader, but I'm used to shark, so that might be alittle overkill.
I never understood why they insist on making it so short, its not for casting distance because i can cast a 30in leader just as far? please explain...
Use this rig and u wont even catch a twig.

Is using heavy test line better than using wire leaders? (both same lb test)
NeoZC 1 year ago
@NeoZC I'll use wire...more resistant to sharp teeths :)
