When the gold coast and western sydney come in should the league just say all past premierships dont count? No of course not. New teams have been coming into the comp ever since it first formed. the buldogs came into the comp in the 1920s. The league gradually expanded into a national competition so they changed the name, thats it. No teams broke off and formed their own league, the league simply changed its name.
I dont actually here to much in the Victorian media about Freo never winning a flag. More of the talk is about the Bulldogs not winning one for 50 years and St Kilda in 44 years etc. Just because new teams come into the comp that doesnt mean that the slate should just be wiped clean.
wat about hawthorn which won premierships in 88 and 89 etc. West Coast, Sydney and Brisbane were already playing in the comp but according to you those premierships don't count because it was still known as the VFL.

So they were the big boys, but still it was a state comp. Hence the 88/9 cups read Premiers of the Victorian Football League.
@jimsms If we were to consider your point that they are one and the same, then isn't it a bit strange that alot of Vic media get into the Dockers for being the only team to not win a flag, when they have only been a part of a comp for 15 years. Yet the Saints and Bulldogs have only won one each in 100 years? Until this year, CW had gone 20, Richmond, 30 years, Melbourne - I can't remember when they last won but it's more than 15 that's for sure. The Dockers ain't doing too badly on those figs.

He got injured last year against Collingwood and that was the last time the Saints beat Collingwood. GO FIGURE! The following 14 weeks or so they were flying without him! GO FIGURE AGAIN! When the gold coast and western sydney come in should the league just say all past premierships dont count? No of course not. New teams have been coming into the comp ever since it first formed. the buldogs came into the comp in the 1920s. The league gradually expanded into a national competition so they changed the name, thats it. No teams broke off and formed their own league, the league simply changed its name.

I dont actually here to much in the Victorian media about Freo never winning a flag. More of the talk is about the Bulldogs not winning one for 50 years and St Kilda in 44 years etc. Just because new teams come into the comp that doesnt mean that the slate should just be wiped clean.

wat about hawthorn which won premierships in 88 and 89 etc. West Coast, Sydney and Brisbane were already playing in the comp but according to you those premierships don't count because it was still known as the VFL.

@jimsms It's a good point, but yes they don't count. While the Eagles were playing in the comp, it still was a Victorian competition. The Vics had the population and thus, the money. So they were the big boys, but still it was a state comp. Hence the 88/9 cups read Premiers of the Victorian Football League.

@jimsms If we were to consider your point that they are one and the same, then isn't it a bit strange that alot of Vic media get into the Dockers for being the only team to not win a flag, when they have only been a part of a comp for 15 years. Yet the Saints and Bulldogs have only won one each in 100 years? Until this year, CW had gone 20, Richmond, 30 years, Melbourne - I can't remember when they last won but it's more than 15 that's for sure. The Dockers ain't doing too badly on those figs.

It's amazing to think that last time St Kilda actually fluked... I mean won a premiership, petrol was 32 cents a litre, man had not yet landed on the moon, the Beatles had just released Yellow Submarine, my dad was only 13 years old, and Australia had just introduced a decimal currency.

Collingwood were reigning premiers in 1920, not premiers.
That means that in one tenth of Collingwood's history they only won four times as many premierships as StKilda won in their entire history, not five times as many.
That's much more respectable.

@ftwsmp Actually, St Kilda (the AFL team) are yet to win a flag IMO. Collingwood have won two. St Kilda, won one as a VFL team, not an AFL team. Collingwood won two as a VFL team, and now two as an AFL team. They are seperate competitions, despite being borne from the VFL. If the comp didn't go national the VFL would have gone bust and folded. The VFL can thank the WCE and WA football money for its survival if Victoria wants to view AFL/VFL as one and the same.

@ftwsmp If we are crediting teams with Flags obtained before the formation of the AFL, then Port Adelaide have done very well, and Fremantle can put a few in their cabinet trophy as back in the 1800's 'Fremantle' (now dissolvent) was a very successful club. Not having a go at the Vic's, more pointing out that St Kilda and the Bullies can join the Fremantle Dockers on the list of 'flagless' AFL teams. However, I do want to point out that the three million up front money from WC saved the VFL.

The only thing that changed in 1990 was the name of the competition. It's still the same competition, only with more teams. How can you have some teams that come from a background where their history counts, but not other teams that were around previous to the AFL, but their history doesn't count. BTW, I doubt any Saints fan would want to hear that their flag didn't count. The VFL and AFL are different things. It's only Victorians that don't want to accept that.

@grim0033 Back when the AFL was the VFL, the current VFL league was known as the VFA. When the VFL changed its name to the AFL in 1990, the old VFA adopted the VFL name. Same teams, same competitions just different names. The AFL didn't just become national overnight, its gradually expanded starting with south melbournes move to Sydney in 1982. Then with West Coast and Brisbane in 86 and so on.

However, I find it funny that teams success from an era that had only cross town competiion get the same recognition as a team that wins a flag in a fully national, professional comp. It's not the same thing IMO. Therefore, the Saints, Demons, Dockers, and Bulldogs are the Clubs not to have won a flag.

@jimsms The reason for nationalization is because the VFL was going broke. Souths moved initially for financial reasons, and the Eagles were literally the saving grace of the VFL. The three million up front registration saved the VFL from going bust. Had that financial pressure not been there, it's possible the AFL would have come about from an independent consortium, let by the Carlton president Elliot.

The Port Adelaide Magpies team you're thinking of won premierships in the South Australian league. A completley new team was created in 1997 Port Adelaide Power. They are two seperate clubs.The AFL was a national competition long before it changed its name. When the old VFL changed its name, the VFA adopted the VFL name.

The only reason they have different colours and are called the power is because the Collingwood magpies were a part of the AFL. I don't expect many Victorians to acknowledge the difference, however, IMO the VFL and AFL are not one and the same.
