  • 2011 version is VISUALLY the best. It has rich colours, great cinematography, awesome soundtrack, gorgeous costumes... Mia and Fassy acted well but as an overall adaptation of my favourite novel, 2006 is still the best. The most characteristic essence of the book was the PASSION. You could feel it through the pages. Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens portrayed that the best.

  • I tried to watch this the other day but only got half way through before being bored, I personally think it didn't compare to the 2006 tv version. Especially this seen, in the 2006 version there is so much more emotion and feeling expressed through Jane and your heart breaks when she says her speech and lifts back up again when Rochester holds her. This scene in this version makes me feel nothing...

  • I just watched the 2006 version and I loved them both. I think the 2006 version was a little more accurate but I'm sorry...I love Michael Fassbender and I though the chemistry between him and Jane was innocent yet passionate. I love this movie.

  • He didn't say i love you! I preffer with Toby and Ruth! You can see passion in their eyes...

  • I enjoyed this version. The only problem I had with it was that it was so short. I cut out a lot of what was in the book. This version was very well done, and I liked the fact that is changed up the time sequence. It gave it a different feel than both the 1996 and 2006 versions.

  • I'm sorry, I'd have focused on the actual scene, but the mereidea of Rochester makes my sanity die and fills my head with endorphins.

  • Is he married already then or something? Rock the polygamy scene dude.

  • to my mind mike is completely too silent and indefferent to be convincing mr. rochester... doesn't still matter, i'll by this movie anyway ;)

  • Being the complete geek I am.. The "wife" part was INCORRECT as in the books she's says bride instead x)

  • @MidnightHexKiss who cares?

  • WELL HELLO MR ROCHESTER ;)

  • Kudos to Mia for attempting a Yorkshire accent ;-)

  • jane is strong and isnt really to be sobbing her eyes out.. she cried and shook and compared to the rest of the film which porttrayed stillness its great!

  • if you think this is bad acting you dont know what acting is! especially since its not overacted like to 2006 version. Mia was great and portrayed jane great! Jane doesnt show much emotion to begin with even though she is passionate. she's knows for being reflective and reserved, which shows how emotional this scene really is, with the movement and every little thing!

  • @christine4xoxo ...Didn't like the 2006 version either, but the acting here is sub par. There is a 1996 version that is absolutely wonderful. I LOVE Michael and I don't know who the girl is so I have no opinion, but here she is horrendous.

  • @bella50008 You said everything that I thought!! I love that 1996 version with William Hurt it is just amazing and really does the book justice I think, though it is less faithful to the end. But this version, I don't like the girl but love Michael!! Will have to watch it properly though to get a better opinion!

  • Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens FOR THE WIN!

  • I LIKED THIS VERSION QUITE ENOUGH BUT THE BEST I THINK IS THE ONE STARRING TIMOTHY DALTON(1983).IVE NEVER SEEN A BETTER PERFORMED ROCHESTER

  • The BBC version may be better because it is complete (stayed faithful to the book), but I believe these two actors are the perfect Rochester and Jane.

  • I like all Jane Eyre films, honestly I do, but to be honest 2006 was much better portrayed along the lines of passion, emotions, and of the like. This is distant, too serious, and cold.

  • because of this movie, i found my another favorite movie couple.

mr.fassbender is hunk and ms.wasikowska is calm, elegant

will they make movie together again?

  • I can't help but to feel somewhat excited by the anguish he shows....good clip

  • I think this shows how no matter strong Jane is, she can express sorrow and hurt without sobbing her eyes out. awesome!

  • I can't see how people dislike this clip. Have you not seen the whole film? Obviously not. Their chemistry is amazing.

  • This scene bugs me in this rendition. Jane is supposed to be sobbing and shaking.

  • Alice =).

  • I wouldn't mind being as "plain" as Jane and marrying such an "ugly" man as Rochester. *cough*

  • Lol :-P i came here, for watching top 10 oldest accounts on youtube :-O

  • this is the most amazing scene ever :) mia's acting is amazing

  • This is just the best scene!

  • Not a Jane Eyre fan until this movie. Loved it!

  • Beautiful scene and Michael is perfect!!!!

  • the bbc version is x1000 better :P

  • beautiful scene... wow

  • Okay, who cares about which adaptations was better. I, for one, think that Mia Wasikowska did not do a very good job on this scene/speech on representing the strength of the actual novel. Jane's speech in the book was so powerful and passionate. However, I did not get much of this from here.

  • @neonsunsets really? hmmm I did. I thought she did so well, I was blushing and then I cried like a baby, it thought it was very emotional...oh well

  • @neonsunsets maybe she did not cry as much as other did on this scene but her eyes were powerful. The way her face was hurting...I dont know...

  • best rochester and jane ever....he is amazing....the 2006 version was quite fake....beautiful scene this one!

  • ok no hating on me, i love jane eyre, the adaptations, each one has it's own..... what's the word, aura?ambience?atmosphere,,,lol...but seriously, the 2011 version is my favorite, as in my most favorite, i love michael as rochester, mia as jane, i love the chemistry between them..prolly i loved this version because it was the 1st one i watched, and if i had watched the other versions first like the 2006, it'll prolly be my favorite.

  • Comparing the 2006ver to this. To me Mia acted better. Seems that the 2006ver has more passion in it, but 1)this movie is much shorter so it can't build as much atmosphere2)In this ver, she seemed reserved because their relationship has been dubious + a rich man was not supposed to marry a governess. The correct emotion should be angry instead of crying because Jane wouldnt dare to be with him in the first place but angry becoz he resorted Jane.

    that's what i think :/ :P

  • @97venice Please read chapter 23 and note: "my tears gushed out....I sobbed convulsively; for I could repress what I endured no longer; I was obliged to yield, and I was shaken from head to foot with acute distress.....I again wept".

  • @FantasyEmrys I AGREE!

  • @FantasyEmrys TOTALLY agree. I LOVE the 2006 Jane Eyre. This marriage proposal SUCKS and she can't act sad enough about it, while the 2006 one was PERFECT! :D

  • Mr Rochester: "I have no wife."

Me: Well that's a blatant lie and you know it!

  • @TheEmziiPop True, but Rochester has managed to convince himself that he has no wife in any meaningful sense - and that he was tricked into marriage.

  • Parts of this movie break my heart

  • Mia Wasikowska is a lucky bitch

  • @FantasyEmrys How is that better than this?

  • @eviola11 Hope you don't mind a third party wading in, but do please watch the proposal scene in 2006. The link is opposite.

The emotion that exudes from Ruth Wilson is exactly as Bronte describes in the book. No other actress has come close IMO.

  • @supergran1000 EXACTLY!! thank you!!! i've been wanting someone to say that forever!!! the 2006 TOPS the list! :) eviola, trust us. watch the 2006 one, u'll be AMAZED!

  • fuck this shit

  • @FantasyEmrys Exactly! The chemistry between the characters in the 2006 version where Amazing! You could actually feel that they could not live without each other

  • It's wonderful to see the naturalism that a modern director can inject into such a hallowed conversation. Right on!

  • ruth wilson and toby stephens are the best jane and mr rochester. end of.

  • "do you doubt me?"- Mr. Rochester

    "entirely."- Jane Eyre

  • No Passion...

    2006? Yes!!

  • This film is like visual poetry. It captures Jane as an artist best. I think it even ends with a tableau that becomes artwork doesn't it? Jane is repressed. After being polite and holding in her true feelings the whole film, seeing her finally say what she's been holding in here... it's great! It works great in context IMO. Also, this version of Jane expresses so much through her artwork.

  • I LIKE FASSBENDER AND MIA THEY ARE AWESOME BUT NOT AS GOOD AS TIMOTHY DALTON AND ZELAH CLARKE IN THE 1983 ADAPTATION.DALTON BECOMES ROCHESTER WHILE CLARKE LOOKS SO PLAIN JUST LIKE SHE SHOULD BE.WATCH THIS TV SERIES I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT TO ALL THE JE FANS.EVER SINCE I WATCHED IT I CANNOT FORGET IT.ESPESSIALY THE GOODBYE SCENE,SO HEARTBRAKING.TIMOTHY FOREVER!!!

  • I think Mia looks perfectly how I imagine Jane would look, in the BBC version the actress, Ruth, is too "interesting" or "odd" looking, defintely not plain enough... But although Mia acts well too, Ruth is definitely the better actress in terms of capturing the part! Also, in this version, during the whole movie I felt that Jane was a monotonous, reserved, sad little thing...but Ruth gives Jane more light and joy! Fassbender though is just as good as the BBC Rochester!

  • my favourite scene's right after this when they kiss at the stairs all happy and in love

  • Michael Fassbender is such a talented actor. Hope to see more of him in other projects.

  • no me gusta.

  • To be honest, this version was wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!! This scene is not representative I think, for the whole film. I very much recommend this movie! The music is awesome, the scenery is so beautiful and some shots are so intimate that I could sense everything even more, right through the screen. Loved, but I also loved the 2006 version.

  • @Lemontree23 Wow, everything you've said is exactly what I think!!!

  • i think mia did a great job playing jane eyre, but i like the 2006-mr. rochester more. :)

  • To those who are comparing this to the 06 version, have any of you actually seen the movie? The whole thing? The emotions (or restrain of) are clearly there, and are more realistic than any prev. version. True, Fassbender may be too handsome for Rochester, but Wasikowska practically WAS Jane in this version: she was so good I forgot that she was Wasikowska. That isn't to say that Ruth didn't do well - but she lost Jane's subtle feistiness and mousy intelligence very quickly. She barely talked.

  • @hanluy1215 I couldn't agree more.

  • @hanluy1215 When I saw the film - the whole thing :) - you couldn't deny that the talent was there. I just got the feeling that there wasn't as much of a *spark* between Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender as there was between Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens, which is why I personally prefer the 2006 version.

I suppose the director wanted to go for the more 'pure and simple' approach rather than the BBC's more theatrical one.

  • @lippy88lizzy I do agree that the proposal was a bit sudden, and that the characters weren't as fleshed out to show their full passions like the 06 version. But that made sense as the latter had four hours while this movie had two. As for the spark, Toby Stephens did a great job igniting it again and again - but Ruth was just...she was not Jane enough. Now I'm curious about what would happen if we put Mia in her place w/ Toby. That would be fun.

  • @hanluy1215 Ruth was perfect! Mia can't convey the emotions like Ruth can. This scene is so stale, there is so passion in her speech like in the book or the 2006 version. And Mia is too pretty for Jane, people seem to like a pretty Jane, but she is supposed to be plain and forgettable.

  • @summzzxoxo Mia isn't pretty, but she's ethereal and mousy, which is exactly what Jane is. I concur that Ruth portrayed emotions very well, but remember that Jane Eyre didn't. And Mia understood that.

  • @hanluy1215 Jane Eyre - ethereal and mousy? Didn't portray emotion? Did we read the same book?

  • @supergran1000 This original conversation was between me and lippy88lizzy. Therefore I won't continue to comment as I don't want to drag this discussion out with more and more diff. users.

  • This is empty and emotionally redundant compared to Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens. Nothing can compare to the BBC's 2006 version I'm afraid.

  • this is a 0 compared to the 2006 version...no passion in this one... such a shame!

  • clumbsy, lol.

  • @FantasyEmrys It's true!! The 2006 version outshines them all!

  • Damn, this one never came to belgian cinemas... I so want to see this!!! Hope the dvd will find its way to belgium

  • Fab movie, trailer seems to have more. Actors are great! Michael Fassbender is passionate, very believable and Jane is an outstanding portrait of fine actressess. Too bad they don't write something as a seriers for the two of them.

    Very well done!

  • I'm sorry but this is the best version!

  • @kagomehater4ever me too this is my favorite!!!but i love he other adoptations as well!!!

  • 0:30-0:41

"do you think that because i am poor, obscure, plain and little, that i am soulless and heartless?" favorite line(:

  • The 2006 version of JANE EYRE is the best adaptation ever! Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens were fantastic. They are the TRUE Jane Eyre & Mr.Rochester.

  • Comment removed

  • It's not the acting in this that doesn't live up to the 2006 version, it's the screenplay. These 2 are my favourite Jane and Rochester, I think their individual characters and their chemistry are the best yet, but the dialogue is truncated due to the film's length - a shame because they've both got the book's spirit spot on. With the 2006 screenplay they'd be perfection.

  • That's the wrong Alice :P

  • this. this. THIS.

  • I find that 2011 had some really good intense scenes but I don't buy their love for each other compared to 2006

I think Fassbender is sooooo hot and he's a great actor, plays the character quite dark, but feel that Mia is too restrained and lacks obvious warmth

  • No, Fassbender is delicious and well cast but there really isnt any chemistry. I can practically see the script that Mia is reading from.

  • Mr. Rochester is ho0o0o0t!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Only a warrior from the movie 300 is strong enough and good enough to play Mr.Rochester!

  • Thumbs up for this Jane who's strong enough to express herself through words and not tears! 2006 version is more for women who cry to get what they want.

  • You tell him Jane!

  • Nothing will ever live up to the 2006 version. <3

  • I really want to like this version but this is my favourite scene and the BBC 2006 adaptation managed to give the scene more chemistry, in my opinion.

  • I love this movie, for so many reasons. One of them being that he looks in and through Jane and studies who she really is. There is not sex in the relationship until after they are married, so there is no pressure. Jane is just a plain girl, but it's why I love the characters, potrayed perfectly. My favorite movie.

  • 2006 BBC version did this scene better

  • i loooove this scene! i saw this movie today and cried my eyes out in the cinema even after the movie was long finished!! mia and michael played this couple so perfectly! she should get an oscar!

  • Although this was a great version and I really enjoyed it, I have to say I prefer the 2006 version. I just see better chemistry between Jane and Rochester in that one. But everyone feels connections to different things and this was a great film.

  • This is my favorite version. Period!!! AHH! MICHAEL FASSBANDER IS SERIOUSLY FRICKING HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is the best proposal on Jane Eyre takes, 1996 or 2006

  • @FantasyEmrys Agree 100%.

  • This is such a beautiful story...It includes all of the emotions that the book makes you feel. Such a heart wrenching story...Such a classic. Loved it.

  • i haven't seen it yet but i've watched some scenes and I really don't like Mia as Jane. I didn't even like her as Alice she is emotionless and not great to watch. I have nothing against her i just don't think she's anything special. I guess i'm saying all this because I love the 2006 version so much this scene is suposed to be VERY emotional and outbursting this scene is just disappointing! Though Michael Fassbender is a rather beautiful Mr Rochester... but nothing like Toby Stephens!!<3

  • @Krissyxxlyn Yeah I agree, nothing can top the 2006 version.

  • @xTheCranberriesx I haven't seen it,but I like the version with William Hurt.

  • @xTheCranberriesx Is the 2006 version closer in comparison to the book?

  • @tvfanatic4ever sorry for the late reply! Yes much! It's set over four one hour episodes so they could obviously fit a whole lot more in, that and the two main actors are just perfect as Jane and Rochester, definitely recommend watching it!

  • What a powerful, heartfelt performance by Mia Wasikowska. I can't wait to see this!

  • @mydreamcast101 Yes, yes you should! I'm currently re-reading it. If you've got an e-reader you can download it for free. Also if you use say a kindle (I've got kindle on my phone) you can touch the words you don't know (there are a few not in modern use) and get a dictionary definition, which is quite handy. It's my absolute favourite classic, well this and Dracula. ;-)

  • This scene should have been an exploding vulcano on Jane's part. Traits of her character, behaviour, feelings, spirit, desire to live life fully all come to clash at this point of the story. This is the culminating point of the story. Instead, this movie version decides to give a luke warm Jane, who sounds like she doesn't even care if she has to leave Thornfield!

  • This is definitely not the best version of Jane Eyre, for the emotions of the characters are poorly insufficient.

  • Where was the kiss? Wasn't he supposed to kiss her (according to the book)? But, I still like this scene, since this is the Mr. Rochester I imagined^^!

  • Comment removed

  • i feel like there is NO emotion in this scene!!!

  • Ruth Wilson wins, without a doubt. I have read the original and unabridged version of the novel several times over, and Jane is distinctly mentioned to have finally lost control and started sobbing uncontrollably at this point of the novel. She finally caves in to her emotions. Mia's performance as a stand alone one is brilliant, but when one reads that scene in the book and compares it to Ruth's performance, Mia's (and Michael Fassbender's) performances are weak, bland and depthless.

  • @masencullen I haven't yet seen this film - another two weeks for us in the UK! But I can't imagine, from these clips, that anyone can surpass Ruth's performance. Her portrayal in the corresponding scene is flawless. I cannot understand why anyone would think she is overdramatic. This is NOT a scene of restraint and stoicism!

  • GAHH I cant decide which remake portrays the characters best! >:O

  • I so look forward to seeing this in September if I can, I love this story even through all the different versions, I think this will be the best yet :)

  • I so look forward to seeing this in September if I can, I love this story even through all the different versions, I think this will be the best yet :)

  • this is y favorite part♥

  • "will you marry me?"

    "Dude, your like fourty.." :P

  • @Jennygirl111

I'd sooner he than a mummy's boy emo lol, he's a brilliant actor and of good breeding ;)

  • I applaud Michael & Mia’s performance - Although out of context, I did watch the proposal scene from the 2006 movie...I felt as though it was difficult to watch, slightly sloppy & overly dramatic. Jane’s character is resolute, direct & articulate - the 06' performances seemed to be anything but. I believe Mia stayed true to the character, she held her own. But agreed, more scenes between them would have been great. 2011 movie lines & language were beautifully written.

  • I saw both scenes, the one from the 2006 adaption and this one. Wow, quite a difference.

  • This had so much potential purely because Michael Fassbender was in it. But I constantly found myself wondering when the build up of their relationship was going to begin, when suddenly, he proposed marriage. It just didn't flow right. There was so many scenes of Jane acting all melancholy but not enough of her and Rochester. Major fail. The only thing that vaguely saved it was the brilliant musical score.

  • This Mia Whatsername is diabolical in this part. She doesn't have any passion, it seems she's more focused on saying the words in a perfect English Accent than actually acting them. Jane Eyre wasn't the perfect little English girl, she had passion that was the whole point! Please i BEG YOU watch the BBC version of this with Ruth Wilson, she is perfect.

  • It's weird, I've been reading the comments here and noticed people mentioning that there are man who dislike the cast and this movie but it's got brilliant reviews and I find that the two of them gave an amazing performance. Only thing that seems lacking are more scenes between the two.

  • T-T!

  • Give me the BBC version any day. Toby Stephens has more passion in his little finger than this guy. Was really looking forward to seeing this film but I think I might just give it a miss. Watch the BBC version much better acting and quality drama.

  • I'm a huge die-hard fan of Timothy Dalton's Rochester. Nothing can surpass that performance for me but I must say I enjoyed Fassbender a bit here and the girl playing Jane stood out. I think TD's version was the closest to the book and so this Jane was probably too fragile and emotional and teary but I enjoyed it and I cried at this scene through her acting. Nice job. It's odd to see it vary so much from the book but still a great movie

  • @GrissomLovesSara drama, yeah...quality, i dont think so.

  • I love Mia

  • Perfektni pribeh a velmi me mrzi ze mam mezery ve vzdelani, nebo jsem chybel? Snad me to jako Teen nezajimalo, aleopravdu krasny film BRAVO

  • I don't care what people say Mia and Michael did a beautiful job with this scene. I've always said that Rochester's and Jane's love is a love with so many layers and complications because of the era they live in. And they portray the layers so beautifully! Mia shows how guarded jane is because of the harsh life she lives, they say Mia showed her without showing emoton but that's how Jane IS, and that's what makes it so great, because only with Edward do we see her smile and show true happiness

  • @SVgirl09 Because for the first time she knows true happiness, she knows love, something deprived from her her whole life. And Michael did an awesome Rochester, because Rochester is a tormented man because he is trapped in a marriage with a demented woman. You can understand why he's always somewhat in a foul mood and why he can't stand living there, he hardly goes there, but because of jane he returns more frequently, because he's intrigued by her! ALL of this is so subtle but that is what

  • @SVgirl09 to me makes it beautiful. Their passion which build throughout the whole movie makes them I think one of the best to protray these characters. Sorry for the rant I'm just sick of people saying this version sucked, when I think it's one of the best yet.

  • Jane may have been written plain..and they may have tried making Mia plain..but she's still beautiful in my opinion.

  • I like what I see - of course it won't be for everyone nothing ever is :)

  • I don't think this is as bad as people are saying.. when I saw it I thought it was good considering I had hardly heard the girl speak or show much emotion the whole bloody time until this point. It seemed in character that she wouldn't lose it but remain dignified.

  • Bitch just say yes! :P xxx

  • this distroyed my image in my head of this scene. in the book she said it with such anger and saddness. because she knew she had to go and had no want to.she had no same feeling and this isnt the speech in the book, im depresed at this

  • This is AWFUL... It's dead, LIFELESS!

Search for "Jane Eyre Proposal Scene". Ruth Wilson's performance in 2006 is, by far the best, for me at least.

  • So passionless it makes me cringe.....:/

  • ughhhh jane annoys me so much

  • Oh, it just hurts my heart (and ears) to hear that lack of passion in Mia's performance. Well, a red face does not make it up.

    Gaaaaaawd. So bad.

  • noooo the last 30 seconds of this scene is left out. It is the part where she says something like "then i will marry you" or so :(((

  • This film bored me. I am very familiar with the book, yet I was confused as to what was happening in the first 20 minutes. It seemed to skip out vital pieces of dialog between characters, leaving the viewer to guess. I much prefer the 2006 version with Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens, their chemistry was perfect and, in my opinion, they were both much better actors. Besides, they both had fitting accents. (That isn't a reference to her being Australian, it's a reference to the others' accents.)

  • Comment removed

  • Fassbender and Ruth Wilson would have been the perfect leading couple!

  • Mia's trying so hard to get the brit accent, that its so hilarious!!

  • This is nice but Ruth Wilson did it so much better

  • I just saw X-Men: First Class and now am obsessed with Michael Fassbender. He's so hot!! I love this movie though, I thought it was better paced than other Jane Eyre's that I have seen and very well acted!

  • Mr Rochester in the book is not handsome and acutually refered to as 'ugly' but this Mr Rochester looks handsome to me...

  • FASSBENDER! I would watch this movie if I didn't hate the book so much

  • And the problem here is not that it is too restrained - it isn't. Wasikowska's line delivery is rushed and seems rehearsed. Restraint requires something - passion, emotion - to be restrained; I don't sense anything underneath. Fassbender is simply lackluster here in comparison with both the intensity and the subtle shifts of mood and character that Timothy Dalton brought to Rochester. Clarke and Dalton knew what restraint really was.

  • better than the previous version imo

  • I just love how the whole romance develops! Completely under-the-table!

  • Comment removed

  • you no doubt prefer the more blatant emotive displays of actors in movies by tyler perry.

  • @payasoinfeliz - I don't know who Tyler Perry is, but I really like Zelah Clarke's performance of this scene, and indeed, her whole performance of Jane Eyre.

  • @llamala2010 If you think this is bad, you clearly know nothing about acting. What's your idea of a good performance, Kristen Stewart in Twilight? Please.

  • @MizNelson - again, I've never seen Twilight, and I gave my opinion of a good performance - Zelah Clarke and Timothy Dalton in this same scene in the 1983 Jane Eyre.

  • There is no chemistry between these two....... The scene is dry...... She is rushing when speaking with zero emotion in her voice......

No, this is not Charlotte's Jane! These two really suck! Any other version of J.E. is better than this! My favorite is 1973 and 2006 version.

  • Zela Clarke is the best Jane Eyre, and Timothy Dalton is the best Rochester. This scene and acting in it is ridiculous compared to that 80s version

  • I hate too say it, (this is just from the various clips and trailers on youtube) but this version of Jane Eyre seems too hollywoodafied. It appears to be painted with too many well known actors, unlike the 2006 television version which made me want to read the book because of the little known actors. Compared to Toby Stephens who played Mr Rochestor, Michael is too much Mr Darcy, hes too soft (or appears so) and too typical of that time handsome, unlike how Stephens was made up.but thats just m
