@ozycar I am a noob too and shouldn't probably be giving advice... but I have an Audio Technica AT-LP120 that I've been doing some spinning on... it's not a technics... but it looks exactly like the nice 1200's haha. but you can pick em up for pretty cheap, so give that a look maybe.

I just picked up a Stanton T-90 turntable and RM3 mixer for cheap to start trying to scratch with. Can't wait to try out the techniques in these videos!

@g4mmo really it's personal preference, different djs will use different methods but it's totally up to you. It is a great exercise though to practice both and work on your ambidexterity.
