Yes, a jazz player will usually add tensions to the chord as well as play various types of chord voicings. Some voicings may be closed (smaller than an octave) while others may be open. I think if you study some jazz theory and harmony with a piano teacher or pickup a book, that would be very helpful. Good luck with the vibes.

I know it's important to use different for chords, but is it a given that a jazz musician will always use a voicing and not play the straight chord? what if you are sight-reading a piece? thanks
