Yeah, his career, whatever warts has earned more than casual curiosity No doubt: c'mon, this guy completed 60 perecent of his passes when that wasn't regular, won a Super Bowlo, highlighted contenderes (those Oilers teams; nah: the Saintes were an airball:-).
The man was a true legend at being a swingin cock hound after the game. Thats the only reason he's not in the hall, because of his off the field exploits.
@CloudLeonhart777 um, what other wide receivers (Rice is already in)? Tim Brown ranks 4th in all time receiving yards (Rice, Owens, and Bruce are ahead), and 4th in receptions (Rice, Carter, and Harrison are ahead). Owens still plays, I don't think Bruce and Harrison are eligible yet, and they didn't even put Carter in. The NFL put Irvin in and not Brown because
1. Irvin has 3 rings to Brown's 0, and
2. Irvin was always in front of a camera, while Brown just played the game.
One of the very best left handed QB's to play the position, as there haven't been that many through the years, other than Hall of Fame QB Steve Young. Ken wouldn't have had success anywhere other than Oakland and should be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Thanks! This brings back such great memories. The Snake was one of a kind. My dad and brothers and I had season tickets to the Raiders 'til they moved to L.A. With 2:00 left, behind by 10 points, we never doubted – Snake would pull it out, somehow some way. He's in MY HoF; that's for sure.
When I think of top quarterback's in the 70's my top 5 are Ken Anderson, Rodger Staubach, Ken Stabler, Fran Tarkenton, and Dan Fouts. Two of them are not in the HOF and I don't know why. I want them both to go into the HOF while they are alive so they can enjoy it some.
The NFL likes to justify stats for someone not being in the hall of fame. Timmy Brown didn't make it this year simply because his stats weren't as good as the other recievers, but when you look at the big picture a lot of the reasons both Kenny's and Tim's teams won were because of them. Kenny is severely underrated because he finished his career with more interceptions than touchdowns, but most of the time we could win a close game because Ken was excellent in the clutch. A shame on the NFL IMO
@CloudLeonhart777 And shame on Sports Illustrated's Paul Zimmerman for purposely keeping Stabler out. He said publicly "KENNY STABLER NEVER GETS MY VOTE AS LONG AS I'M ALIVE". That reveals an OBVIOUS personal vendetta that he has against him. How fair is that? Please respond back. I'd like to know your opinion on that.
The only reason why he's not in the hall of fame, at least from what I read somewhere, is that Stabler threw 222 interceptions. That, and the NFL has something against the Raiders because they are assholes.
@784Final Yes. The Raiders were assholes for a good reason. First of all, they were from the old AFL. Al Davis openly opposed the racism of the NFL. Thats one reason for the NFL's "GOOD OL' BOYS" hatred of Al Davis and the Oakland Raiders. While the NFL had a quota system of 4 black football players per team, the AMERICAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE actively recruited black football players. And the Raiders were the main team that would do this. Look it up MY BROTHA!! Find the truth for yourself.
@784Final Sorry about that. But yes, you are so the NFL was and still are assholes. Look how they have shafted the Raiders. Quick to call penalties on the Raiders. But let the other team do the same thing to a Raiders player, and a grain of sand or the sun ( even if its raining ) always "CONVENIENTLY" gets in the official's eyeball. Do ever notice that? I'd like to know your opinion on this.
@Oaklandgirlpitlover1 Amen to that! You know what else? Namath made the Top 100 while Stabler didn't! The NFL just doesn't like the Raiders, that's really all you can say about why he's not in the hall.
@machiiniiima He only has three and the first two came thanks to Joe Montana. Stabler got his on his own and didn't have to develop a reputation by getting out of another quarterback's shadow. If Montana hadn't of left the 49ers then everyone would know Steve Young as Joe Montana's back up. I respect Steve Young but I just like Stabler more, personal preference is all it is.
Let me help you understand who the snake was! He was the man! He took hard hits every Sunday. Not like the today's football that protects the quarterbacks. Every time the Snake was in a pinch, look out, that's when he kicked your ass. Hell, the raiders used to make me mad when they were leading in the half. Only then they would go on too lose. Kenny played hard both on and off the field. He was a quarterback's quarterback. A neat guy who liked to party both on and off the field.
I'd love to see Stabler's QB sneak against New England Pats 1978??? The Raiders got a reprieve after NE got called for roughing the QB. Otherwise the raiders would not have won the SB that year. What an awesome call by Madden/offensive coordinator
@gavin1971 No. Ken Stabler's Quarterback sneak in the playoffs was in 1976. The REAL reason the Patriots lost that playoff game to the Raiders, was because of a false start penalty BEFORE OAKLAND EVEN GOT THE BALL. WHICH IS ALSO BEFORE THE INFAMOUS ROUGHING THE PASSER PENALTY. I actually saw the game.
Kenny Stabler will eventually be enshrined at the Canton Pro Football Hall of Fame. I pray that it's soon, so that he can enjoy it for as long as possible.
yeah, and didn't the Raiders have the best record on Monday Night Football? At least for a while? I seem to remember in the 70's when they were on monday night they hardly ever lost. They used to be unbeatable on monday night.
@CesarMill498 You are ABSOLUTELY right. The Raiders even to this day MIGHT still have the best Monday Night record. And during Ken Stabler's years with the Raiders, Oakland lost only one Monday Night game. And THAT was only by "ONE POINT"! Yet Joe Namath "LOST" every Monday Night game he ever played in.
Great tribute to great player....I finally got to meet him back in 2008 at an Alabama vs FSU game when he was doing his radio show and I was wearing my my #12 Alabama shirt with Stabler on the back.
Allowing someone of Ken Stabler's talent to have 2 plus minutes remaining in a game was like hoping you wouldn't get a speeding ticket for speeding. Kenny was amongst the best when it came to crunch time. Kenny should have been inducted into the Hall of Fame many years ago.
I seen First Hand, back in 1972 Playoff game, what the Snake can do. Believe me, back in the day, Not none of us Steelers fans wanted to face Ken Stabler, and the Raiders in that 2 mins offense. I have much respect for the Raiders and Ken Stabler back in the day. Do the right thing, Hall of Fame put him in there, so he can live to see it. He Belongs.
Ken Stabler was so resourceful and was a confident, poised leader. He threw a nice, soft ball and had great savvy and excellent anticipation. No matter what he did in his free time, Stabler understood the game and read a defense with the best of them. He could think on his feet and pick apart a defense. He got by in his twilight years on guts and guile.
The Snake belongs in the hall...nice video but the New Orleans game needed a close...if thats the MNF game where Madden tried to pull Ken and he refused and they came back and won.
Daryle Lamonica should be in also, Daryle has the second highest winning percentage (of games started) of any QB in NFL history. Otto Graham is first.
But Lamonica could not throw well against zone coverages of the early 1970s. Those zone coverages were designed to contain guys like Lamonica. Of course, the Raiders did NOT use zone coverages, so Lamonica was not able to even try to practice against it. But more than anything, Lamonica never the short stuff well. He never threw the swing pass well, and then there was the all out disaster of a swing pass in the 4th quarter of the 1968 AFL Championship. That put Namath in the Hall of Fame.
Stabler was to the Raiders offense what Bradshaw was to the Steelers, what Staubach was the the Cowboys. This man is not in the HOF because of what he did off the field like partying and having a good time. Lawrence Taylor of the Giants was almost refused induction because of what he did off the field. Stabler was an elite QB in the 70s, give the man his due! I actually hate the Raiders but appreciate Stabler!
@ixcuincle Seriously! How the hell is this dude not in the Hall of Fame? Do the right thing and put him in, sportswriters.
The guy's an absolute top-tier legend. I had a lot of respect for writer Paul Zimmerman until I saw him say Ken Stabler would never get his vote as long as he (Zimmerman) lived.
I can't think of one reason why he's not in the HOF. Seriously.
He has the statistics. He has the ring. INDUCT THIS MAN. Who the fuck cares if he womanized and "studied his playbook by jukebox". He went out on the field and he kicked ass.
Much thanks for putting this tribute up! The HOF is a joke because sports writers, etc......do the voting, not your peers. Look at how long it took Lynn Swann to get in...........almost 20 years(and typical comments by HOF 'voters' like Peter King-comparing eras-"Look at Swann's stats vs Jerry Rice".....). Of all the great qbs of the 70s(Tark, Griese, Starbauch, & Bradshaw- he's the only one not in. As Paul Zimmerman stated: "The Snake could throw a green bean into a keyhole"! And, he won.....
Met him in 2001 introduced him to my son (16) I told him it was great to watch him play in the 70's and now (Gannon years) I take my son .He smiled and said to my son it's fun huh with his southern accent .What a great athlete and person
Stabler belongs in the Hall of Fame. I met him at an autograph show at Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee, around 1991 and I have never met a nicer sports star. I had on a Raiders jacket and he said he liked my jacket. Great guy and great player.
Always hated the Raiders in the day but there were two Raiders I always felt were arguably the best at their positions in that mid/late 70's era--one was Ray Guy, and the other was the Snake. A HoF'er is someone you fear playing against. He was one of them.
I may be a Patriots fan but I have to give credit where its due, Kenny Stabler shouldve been in the Hall of Fame years ago, he was a true winner. (and also Cliff Branch)
@JIMFISHES1 as a raider fan since the 60's, i've always said that the teams/fans from pittsburg and new england were the smartest and most loyal to their teams....and your remarks prove my point..
even when you know how hard we played each other, you still have to call it like it is...now if i can only get you to agree with the "foul" ruling over the "tuck" play in the snow?..fumble, game over, raiders go to super bowl...that was our game!
@drfstarks - The tuck rule was a joke, but you are forgetting one thing. That was the divisional round, not the AFC Championship Game. They still had to beat Pittsburgh to get to the Super Bowl (which they would have)
You can'y judge a quarterback bye interceptions ! Every Raider fan in the 70s would agree. The Snake should B in THE HALL ! Dam I miss those days !!!!!
@MrkintheDrk ..you mean the days when the raiders could march down the field with no time left and still win??..you mean when you could always count on a "complete" long pass to a wide receiver?? you mean when the raiders were "real friends to each other and dedicated to the fans"??..oh, you mean when the raiders owned monday night football??....yeah, i miss those days too....
I got to meet quite a few Raider players in the late 70's. The Snake was one cool customer...on and off the field. He was the only player who could keep Matuzak somewhat under control.lol That's why Madden had them bunk together during spring training.
NOone who "actually saw" him QB the raiders in the 70's or 80's would ever say he is not a HOF QB .He was what bradshaw was to the steelers or staubach to the cowboys or elway to the broncos...no stabler, then their would be no madden! HE WAS(or is) a winner ,losers have good numbers sometimes.
Im a Steelers Fan, the Greatest compliment I can give Kenny "Snake" Stabler, if Greise, Tarkenton, Bradshaw, and Staubach are all in the HALL OF FAME, the Snake should have been in the Hall long time ago, its WRONG he's still not inducted.
@snoopydog48us yeah and there have been quarterbacks after him that have went and not as great as Stabler was definitely on of the all time greats of professional football a fan favorite.
@snoopydog48us Coming from a Steelers fan, thats quite a compliment. I'm glad that even NON-Raiders fans can see the injustice at hand against Ken Stabler. And I thank you.
Remember though that Stabler's 1st year with the Oilers ended in an AFC championship "loss" to the Steelers-on a piss poor call in the end zone. Also, Davis NEVER liked Stabler, despite his clutch successes and endless winning. Davis was (and is) obsessed with "the vertical game." That's why he traded Stabler for Dan Pastorini. Dan bombed in Oakland and wasn't near the QB Stabler was but he could throw further! There was also an Alabama (Stabler) - Brooklyn (Davis) disconnect between the 2.
You are right on every point, with exception to one. In Houston's 1979 AFC Championship loss to the Steelers, on that piss poor call by the official, Dan Pastorini (#7) threw that pass. Ken Stabler was still with Oakland that year. But you are right. Al Davis didn't like Stabler. And that is what led to Stabler's demise in Oakland. Al Davis just couldn't leave well enough alone. And seeing Dan Pastorini with the Raiders, the chemistry just wasn't there. He just didn't fit. And it cost him
You are so right. That was a terrible trade for both teams. Both QB's had great chemistry with their teams...before the trade. That's a quality that dosn't show up on the stat sheet and if it wasn't for the Steelers both Stabler and Pastorini would have more Super Bowl wins... eh, that would be one win between them.
Let's also put Al Davis in the HOF for dickhead sports owners with Jerry Jones and G. Steinbrenner.
I feel that his chances of getting into the Hal of Fame would have been greater if he had retired following the 1979 season and instead playing 5 forgettful seasons in Houston and New Orleans.
I know a lot of people would argue with me on this, but Stabler's presence in Houston made them a better team. Bum Phillips had hoped to bring that magic to New Orleans, but it was not to be. By that time Stabler was just too beat up.
Bradshaw the guy had so many toys to play with and a game console called the steel curtain that shut down stabler every time his toys were John Stallworth , Lynn Swann, Franco Harris, Rocky Bleir, Bennie Cunningham and im not saying grossman but in 6 seasons they had 4 super bowls and bradshaw had MVP twice and swann and harris had it once
He turned the ball over way too much and he wasn't a great role model. He couldn't do everything. What he could do was, with 2 minites to go in the game down by 3 with 2 defensive linemen in his face throw the ball over the head of two CBs for a game winning touchdown every time. He was one of the greatest leaders the game of football has ever known. No offense to Bradshaw, but he was the best QB of the 70s. It is a joke he is not in the HOF.
Hey RonPaul: You are right on the money. Nobody threw a prettier ball than The Snake is his prime. In a time where all professional athletes go out of there way with dances, shuffles, tattoos etc. too get attention and act cool we have to remember this: The coolest of them all was Kenny "The Snake" Stabler and he did it by being himself. He was a playboy, rebel, riverboat gambler with a great talent and a generals mind. In sum...a perfect Raider. Long Live Kenny "The Snake" Stabler.
Great video. He was very quotable, too. He told Sports Illustrated about his fondness for fast cars and speedboats. He said he didn'r want a Rolls Royce. "Me having a 'Rolls' is like earrings on a pig".
There is no other QB I'd rather have on my team with 4 points down and two minutes to go. He did it time after time. I don't care how good his OL was he still should be in the H of F.
Other than maybe Joe Montana, Ken Stabler was cooler under pressure than any quarterback ever. It wasn't just that other teams didn't want to have to play against him; they were downright AFRAID of him. They knew he was going to outwit them and pick their pocket
In his prime years, he was probablly the most accurate passer ever. I remember he threw the tightest spirals I've ever seen. All his passes looked like beautiful frozen ropes, and he had that ability to fit them into the tightest places
Great vid. You've got all the big moments: the sea of hands, ghost to the post, the touchdown plunge against New England, his comment—relayed by Madden—during the double OT win at Baltimore.
Snake was one cool customer, my favorite player of all-time. If he was in his prime now, I'd trade half my fantasy team for him.
He got his name "Snake" from Bear Bryant, who said he could run through defenses like a snake. But after about '74 his legs were too beat up and he lost his mobility. Still a great passer and team leader. But lack of the running dimension has probably cost him the hof. Too bad...Snake was "my man" in the 70's
I don't think your nickname description is accurate. I seem to recall he got the nickname after a sideline to sideline punt return for a touchdown in high school. Wiki has it listed this way:
During his high school career, he earned his nickname "the Snake"[1] from his coach following a long, winding touchdown run.
snake stabler, cliff branch, ray guy, dave dalby, lester(the molester)hayes, greg townsend, and coach tom flores all should be in the hall of fame...i'm sure i left a few off too...Van Mcelroy is in my hall of fame!!!
check this out, why isn't cliff branch in the hall of fame or greg townsend, reggie kenlaw, ben davidson, the raiders ALWAYS get shafted, on and off the field, thats why they take their vengence out on the league, GO RAIDERS!!!!!!!!!!
Kenny is the man. Bset two-minute drill QB. Great play caller, nice thrower, cool as could be. The goods, best quarterback from the 70's along with Ken Anderson, Dan Fouts, Bradshaw and Staubach. He was unstoppable throwing to Casper, Branch and Biletnikoff. I'll take the Snake anytime, any game against anyone.
awesome job ........... you had some great photos and good footage ....... I have all those cards and then some , plus a handful of autographs of him .... Loved the SNAKE !
Great job on this. I have that football card with Fran Tarkenton and Ken Stabler still. I was 6 years old when I discovered the snake and the Raiders and loved watching their games.
i can't belive he isn't in the hof but what about Jim Plunkett jesus christ you hear about jon elway dan marino JP has as many superbowls as them fucks it's bullshit it's because he is a RAIDER

mythid12 1 year ago 2
I seen First Hand, back in 1972 Playoff game, what the Snake can do. Believe me, back in the day, Not none of us Steelers fans wanted to face Ken Stabler, and the Raiders in that 2 mins offense. I have much respect for the Raiders and Ken Stabler back in the day. Do the right thing, Hall of Fame put him in there, so he can live to see it. He Belongs.
snoopydog48us 1 year ago 2
Ken Stabler was so resourceful and was a confident, poised leader. He threw a nice, soft ball and had great savvy and excellent anticipation. No matter what he did in his free time, Stabler understood the game and read a defense with the best of them. He could think on his feet and pick apart a defense. He got by in his twilight years on guts and guile.

The Snake belongs in the hall...nice video but the New Orleans game needed a close...if thats the MNF game where Madden tried to pull Ken and he refused and they came back and won.

@rushwb Madden retired in 1978 Tom Flores was the coach in 1979. I recall that game well when the raiders came all the way back and won.

@rushwb John Madden had retired the year before in 1978. Tom Flores was the coach of the Raiders in 1979.

Daryle Lamonica should be in also, Daryle has the second highest winning percentage (of games started) of any QB in NFL history. Otto Graham is first.
mrboffo1 2 years ago
But Lamonica could not throw well against zone coverages of the early 1970s. Those zone coverages were designed to contain guys like Lamonica. Of course, the Raiders did NOT use zone coverages, so Lamonica was not able to even try to practice against it. But more than anything, Lamonica never the short stuff well. He never threw the swing pass well, and then there was the all out disaster of a swing pass in the 4th quarter of the 1968 AFL Championship. That put Namath in the Hall of Fame.
plntntvzn 1 year ago
Stabler was to the Raiders offense what Bradshaw was to the Steelers, what Staubach was the the Cowboys. This man is not in the HOF because of what he did off the field like partying and having a good time. Lawrence Taylor of the Giants was almost refused induction because of what he did off the field. Stabler was an elite QB in the 70s, give the man his due! I actually hate the Raiders but appreciate Stabler!
lorenzodemedici1 2 years ago 4
Add to that, Stabler is the ONLY QB in the 70's to win a Superbowl that is not in the Hall of Fame.
Thats sad. Anyone who won one in that era should be in.

Talk about tough football, and tough QB's. My God, any modern QB would shit himself if he had to play in the 70's

I wasn't a Raiders fan in those days, but Stabler was a favorite, along with Fred Belitnikof (sp?). Stabler surely deserves to be in the HoF.
Thanks for including the snip of the "Immaculate Deception" fumble play, I LOVED it.
And let us not forget that Stabler's girlfriend was known as "Wonderfully Wicked Wanda"!

@ixcuincle Seriously! How the hell is this dude not in the Hall of Fame? Do the right thing and put him in, sportswriters.
The guy's an absolute top-tier legend. I had a lot of respect for writer Paul Zimmerman until I saw him say Ken Stabler would never get his vote as long as he (Zimmerman) lived.
esmith407 2 years ago
Zimmerman will have another stroke and will leave, then Stabler will get in the HOF. ahahaha
21Asomugha21 2 years ago
I can't think of one reason why he's not in the HOF. Seriously.
He has the statistics. He has the ring. INDUCT THIS MAN. Who the fuck cares if he womanized and "studied his playbook by jukebox". He went out on the field and he kicked ass.
ixcuincle 2 years ago
Much thanks for putting this tribute up! The HOF is a joke because sports writers, etc......do the voting, not your peers. Look at how long it took Lynn Swann to get in...........almost 20 years(and typical comments by HOF 'voters' like Peter King-comparing eras-"Look at Swann's stats vs Jerry Rice".....). Of all the great qbs of the 70s(Tark, Griese, Starbauch, & Bradshaw- he's the only one not in. As Paul Zimmerman stated: "The Snake could throw a green bean into a keyhole"! And, he won.....

Stabler belongs in the Hall of Fame. I met him at an autograph show at Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee, around 1991 and I have never met a nicer sports star. I had on a Raiders jacket and he said he liked my jacket. Great guy and great player.
raiders1967 2 years ago
Always hated the Raiders in the day but there were two Raiders I always felt were arguably the best at their positions in that mid/late 70's era--one was Ray Guy, and the other was the Snake. A HoF'er is someone you fear playing against. He was one of them.

@JIMFISHES1 as a raider fan since the 60's, i've always said that the teams/fans from pittsburg and new england were the smartest and most loyal to their teams....and your remarks prove my point..
even when you know how hard we played each other, you still have to call it like it is...now if i can only get you to agree with the "foul" ruling over the "tuck" play in the snow?..fumble, game over, raiders go to super bowl...that was our game!
drfstarks 2 years ago
@drfstarks - The tuck rule was a joke, but you are forgetting one thing. That was the divisional round, not the AFC Championship Game. They still had to beat Pittsburgh to get to the Super Bowl (which they would have)

@MrkintheDrk ..you mean the days when the raiders could march down the field with no time left and still win??..you mean when you could always count on a "complete" long pass to a wide receiver?? you mean when the raiders were "real friends to each other and dedicated to the fans"??..oh, you mean when the raiders owned monday night football??....yeah, i miss those days too....
drfstarks 2 years ago
I got to meet quite a few Raider players in the late 70's. The Snake was one cool customer...on and off the field. He was the only player who could keep Matuzak somewhat under control.lol That's why Madden had them bunk together during spring training.
nerblebun 2 years ago 3

Oaklandgirlpitlover1 1 year ago
snake messed up by pissing off al davis with a trade request to go to crappy teams..Houston..New orleans
Should be in the Hall because Madden let him veto plays with Kenny calling many.
Smart and cool player!
wscotty9 2 years ago 2
Remember though that Stabler's 1st year with the Oilers ended in an AFC championship "loss" to the Steelers-on a piss poor call in the end zone. Also, Davis NEVER liked Stabler, despite his clutch successes and endless winning. Davis was (and is) obsessed with "the vertical game." That's why he traded Stabler for Dan Pastorini. Dan bombed in Oakland and wasn't near the QB Stabler was but he could throw further! There was also an Alabama (Stabler) - Brooklyn (Davis) disconnect between the 2.
teller121 2 years ago
Pastorini was the QB in 1979 vs the Steelers. Stabler came the following year.
zxcv444453 2 years ago
You are right on every point, with exception to one. In Houston's 1979 AFC Championship loss to the Steelers, on that piss poor call by the official, Dan Pastorini (#7) threw that pass. Ken Stabler was still with Oakland that year. But you are right. Al Davis didn't like Stabler. And that is what led to Stabler's demise in Oakland. Al Davis just couldn't leave well enough alone. And seeing Dan Pastorini with the Raiders, the chemistry just wasn't there. He just didn't fit. And it cost him
Oaklandgirlpitlover1 2 years ago
You are so right. That was a terrible trade for both teams. Both QB's had great chemistry with their teams...before the trade. That's a quality that dosn't show up on the stat sheet and if it wasn't for the Steelers both Stabler and Pastorini would have more Super Bowl wins... eh, that would be one win between them.
Let's also put Al Davis in the HOF for dickhead sports owners with Jerry Jones and G. Steinbrenner.
mrboffo1 2 years ago 2
Al Davis is already in the Hall of Fame.
aces425 2 years ago
I feel that his chances of getting into the Hal of Fame would have been greater if he had retired following the 1979 season and instead playing 5 forgettful seasons in Houston and New Orleans.
fatcatsathat 2 years ago
I know a lot of people would argue with me on this, but Stabler's presence in Houston made them a better team. Bum Phillips had hoped to bring that magic to New Orleans, but it was not to be. By that time Stabler was just too beat up.
Oaklandgirlpitlover1 2 years ago 2
i hate the raiders but KENNY STABLER BELONGS IN THE HALL OF FAME ! he was one of the best who ever played.HE WAS SO MUCH FUN TO WATCH.

Bradshaw the guy had so many toys to play with and a game console called the steel curtain that shut down stabler every time his toys were John Stallworth , Lynn Swann, Franco Harris, Rocky Bleir, Bennie Cunningham and im not saying grossman but in 6 seasons they had 4 super bowls and bradshaw had MVP twice and swann and harris had it once
thiefnetowners245 2 years ago

Long Live Kenny "The Snake" Stabler.
axelandstuefreed 2 years ago 4
Great video. He was very quotable, too. He told Sports Illustrated about his fondness for fast cars and speedboats. He said he didn'r want a Rolls Royce. "Me having a 'Rolls' is like earrings on a pig".

There is no other QB I'd rather have on my team with 4 points down and two minutes to go. He did it time after time. I don't care how good his OL was he still should be in the H of F.
ILOVEMYGIZY 2 years ago 2
Other than maybe Joe Montana, Ken Stabler was cooler under pressure than any quarterback ever. It wasn't just that other teams didn't want to have to play against him; they were downright AFRAID of him. They knew he was going to outwit them and pick their pocket
In his prime years, he was probablly the most accurate passer ever. I remember he threw the tightest spirals I've ever seen. All his passes looked like beautiful frozen ropes, and he had that ability to fit them into the tightest places
RonPaulRevolution4u 2 years ago 7
Perfect quarterback for the Raiders of the 1970s. A little quirky, but talented. They were fun team to watch.

Great vid. You've got all the big moments: the sea of hands, ghost to the post, the touchdown plunge against New England, his comment—relayed by Madden—during the double OT win at Baltimore.
Snake was one cool customer, my favorite player of all-time. If he was in his prime now, I'd trade half my fantasy team for him.
sprechendeutsch 3 years ago 4
He got his name "Snake" from Bear Bryant, who said he could run through defenses like a snake. But after about '74 his legs were too beat up and he lost his mobility. Still a great passer and team leader. But lack of the running dimension has probably cost him the hof. Too bad...Snake was "my man" in the 70's
nealbfinn 3 years ago 3
I don't think your nickname description is accurate. I seem to recall he got the nickname after a sideline to sideline punt return for a touchdown in high school. Wiki has it listed this way:
During his high school career, he earned his nickname "the Snake"[1] from his coach following a long, winding touchdown run.
sprechendeutsch 3 years ago
Wikipedia is notoriously inaccurate. I don't know about the case but don't rely on them to have the truth.
