Well, it depends on how you look on it. Metalcore is still moving forward, new bands are appearing (but still the oldest are the best, fe. Lamb of God). Black Metal had IMO the greatest atmosphere able to create with music. Many bands now are playing, but without any deeper sense in their lyrics and caring about their look (yeah, corpsepaint can look stupid, but that's black metal and I think, that it's very important). They're mostly flat. Death metal is just more "brutal" or "technical".
