  • as a people we need to take our stand. We need to raise the red flag and take to the streets and our citys back, though better or for worse. The capitalist war machine can not be tolarated. It doesnt understand humanity. We as humans striving for progress must be willing to sacrifice everything, to give our hearts for a better world a just world where the poorest dont have to wonder about food on there plate we cannot stand to be ruled anymore we are all our own masters we must fight! For john

  • @DrBoneskin did you know the first place the red flag of socialism was flown was at hirwaun common in Wales at the start of the Merthyr rising 1831 .. google it if nae believe!

  • Dick Gaughan. Legend. That is all.

  • A supposed socialist facesBritish prison this week. I doubt if John Maclean would have recgnised Mr Sheridan,

    Beautiful. clear, simple politics.

No car loans, no, mortgages, a weekly wage for bread, board and a penny fur a trippy taeLargs .

Our Grandparents were better off than we think we are now.

  • So, after all, I was right. Had the Labour men stayed in Glasgow and started a Scottish Parliament, as did the genuine Irish in Dublin in 1918, England would have set up and made concessions to Scotland just to keep her ramshackle Empire intact to bluff other countries. The curious feature in the Gorbals was that the block Irish vote sent Buchanan into the Parliament of the "Hated English" whilst the Irish chorus was being sung "Ireland a Nation Once Again".

  • @Norrie754 The Culture of the Irish in the Gorbals of Glasgow Reflectedin sending of an antimperialist voice to Westminster. It's a pity outhers from the Scots working class didn't see where their class loyalities lay But were blinded by the promise of the assured of the enduring paternal largesse of Mother England having bought into this dream of Empire and as blindly revelled in the Jingoism they swollowed from an early age via the likes of 'TheOrange Order'.. some things never change!!!!!

  • It is the Irish vote that prevents Scotland being a Nation once again and prevents us all as slaves getting our freedom. I appeal to Irishmen not to be led any longer by the old Nationalist wirepullers, but to think out the situation clearly and calmly. Ireland will only get her Republic when Scotland gets hers.

  • @Norrie754 Don't blame the Scots/Irish as they are indeed the most Class conscious and progressive grouping that one could come across George Buchanan and The Red Clydesiders stood up for Revolution Not Reform as Parlimentary democracy would never bring about Real Change. It's "ScotlandsShame" the sectarian hatred of ones fellow man that dividing the Working Class in The west of Scotland One only had to look at the recient past those Shipbuilding and allied industries to get a handle on same

  • Socialism is an idea that continuously evolves and changes shape to adapt to the rate of collapse of capitalism and the failure of the market system. Whatever Nazis called themselves they were created by capitalism, they were a corporate military-industrial complex ..sponsored by American investment.

No Nazi bomber would have ever flown without the active assistance of Standard Oil and without Wall Street backing no Zyklon B would have been produced to gas the (socialist) death camp victims.

  • There are no socialists who are in favour of laissez faire capitalism, as socialists oppose captialism in all its forms. As for socialist states without strong central government, the real question is how many socialist states have there actually been?

  • @cobrolchain2

Few, and none that Maclean, Hardie or any other Socialist would recognise or be proud of. Socialism to me is neither Marxist-Leninist nor the vulgar Capitalist -bank-hostage-society states we have inherited. The only thing we all want to be, whether rich, poor or indiferrent is old. The very same people we take the least care of. A sad state of affairs for nation who can 'afford' to wage war on Wall Streets price list. John MacLean would be very dissapointed.

  • @cobrolchain2 Have you read anything about market socialism?

  • @QuietReckoning I don't accept that there is such a thing, market economies are inherently capitalist.

  • @cobrolchain2 There's a big difference between socialism and social democracy, which is a welfare state that asks this: From Each according to their Ability, To Each acorrding to their Need, the Surplus to those who have earned it, and a communist economy which prevents an individual from reaping gains from his labor.

Pure socialism violates the individual as much as pure capitalism does.

There's another way. A better way.

  • @cobrolchain2 In scandinavia that was pritty dam socialist that is my ideal.

  • What was socialist about the Nazis?

  • Nazi in Germany was known as National Socialism. The word Nazi literally comes from the German language of National Socialist German Workers Party (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei) They referred to themselves as national socialists. They believed in collectivism and the power of workers but took a huge right field jump in everything else. Remember Karl marx came from Germany and he was a contemporary to the beginning of the so called Nazi Party.

  • North Korea calls itself the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, East Germany called itself the German Democratic Republic. Do you believe these were democratic just because they labelled themselves so?

  • @twainnname John McClean being a Nationalist AND Socialist he was a radical rather than a reactionary so from this remove he spoke at Rallys against conscription feeling that theWar was an Imperialist war [WW1] between dysfunctional first cousins and not worth one drop of blood because of this stand he was imprisioned for Sedition by the court . John McCleans Marxism was poles apart from Facist ideology that spawned despots such as Franco,Mussolini ,and Hitlers National Socialism!

  • @malachy1847 well said pal, 1st class.

  • This is idiocy. Their opponents were the Marxist Social Democratic German Workers' Party.

They were Fascist and protectionist- both firmly right-wing. The idea that the use of the state is left-wing is a very recent fiction- at the time the left was being attacked for not being statist enough- for being anarchists and anti-Imperialists.

  • Read "Hurrah for the Blackshirts", and a history of the Tory Party that begins before 1997 and you'll find that the traditional Right in Britain is very much of the same breed as Nazi fascism- not liberal, not socialist, not social democratic, but protectionist like the BNP today.

  • Not very much after Hitler had consolidated his power over the party in the late twenties and early thirties, but before that the party had a clear left wing. The Night of the Long Knives eradicated most of the more "socialist" nazi leadership, i.e. Röhm and Strasser.

Two "socialist" features that was retained by the NSDAP that I can think off the top of my mind would be a deep animosity towards laissez faire capitalism (which was considered Jewish) and favouring a strong central government.

  • Neither of those are intrinsicly socialist features. Even liberals and many other pro-capitalists oppose laissez faire capitalism. And a strong central government isn't inherently socialist either, it's a common trend amongst capitalist countries and there are also many socialists who oppose the concept of a strong central government.

  • Please not the " " in my last post. While you might be right in principle could you point to a socialist state without a strong central government or a person defining themselves as socialist who is in favour of laissez faire capitalism?

  • I wish we had John MacLean these days to come and unite the socialists in Glasgow North East, it's stupid that there's a Socialist Labour candidate, a Scottish Socialist candidate and a Solidarity candidate.

  • A brave man as someone said - apparently he told Lenin to F' off when told to return to Britain and form the ENGLISH Communist Party!

  • Brave John MacLean has come hame tae the Clyde!

  • Beautiful song, one of the greatest men of the 20th century.

  • John ye never died, yer memory still lingers on wi' us.............and we will continue tae remember and cherish ye as long as the fighting spirit ye had inspires us aw!

  • Scottish Workers Republic. Independence nothing less mo charaide.

  • In case you haven't noticed, communism started in England as Marx and Engels wrote "das Kapital" there. John Maclean was locked up 1918 after leading the left wing resistance in Scotland for years.

  • You think there was no communism before Marx and Engels? You need to read the history of these islands. The Diggers and Levellers were here centuries before Marx and Engels.

  • Read something, learn something and then comment. John Maclean was a Marxist and social democrat and founder of the Scottish Socialist Workers' Party. Offered a full pardon by the King on his release from prison (which he refused, saying that he owed his freedom to "the Scottish workers who campaigned for his freedom and not to the King". On his passing, an esitimated 200,000 people attended his funeral. History now regards him as the leading revolutionary of his time.

  • everyday in life i think about john maclean, scotlands greatest champion of the working class, we need him now more than ever, alba go bragh! MYSPACE THE FIGHTING 69TH DUMFRIES BAND.

  • John Maclean Rally on Sunday 30th November in Glasgow. .30 pm.
