  • Plus, the Bill is way better. Americans should see what we have done with Law & Order with Law & Order UK, it's embarasingly bad.

  • @Birdman283 the best cop show ever is undoubtably the wire, southland a close second. not watched more than five minutes of the bill in years to be fair but thats because it always felt like a standard soap with a cop theme. the american version of L&O doesn't seem any better really, they both over-dramatise a lot.

  • @milkkart I tried watching the Wire once, couldn't understand a word :D I suppose that's why I like the Bill, the more soap-like feel to it. I like it mainly between '98 and '02 when Richard Handford was executive producer. It started to go down hill after that. It started to become to soap-like, and then the change to the Wire-like format was an epic fail. It covered a lot of issues and was always very realistic.

    You can't alternate time signatures twice in a bar or every bar, that's completely insane! You're clearly no musician... You're counting the bar as 1-2-3-4-5-6-1---2---3---4--- when it should be counted 1---2---3---1---2---3---4---. This is an example of 7/4 time!

Don't be so pompous and insulting, this was no slight on Bailey at all. Calm down, be civil to people, and don't say things like "clearly you're no musician" just because you misunderstood what I was saying.

Anyway, I lied you can have time signature change every bar such as 5/4 with 6/4, but if one of them is in double time it's just as stupid as changing twice a bar. And of course, it WAS a slight on Bill, you're trying to make him look stupid. However, all you've achieved is making yourself sound stupid, as well as illiterate with this latest comment. Congratulations!

  • The bill is a prime time television show in the UK before Law and Order actually came out but i never watched it or Law and order sooooo i wouldnt be able to tell the diffrence.

  • Im not sure I could find you a video but essentially 4/4 means 4 beats a bar, so listen to the beat in the music and you should be able to count to yourself 1,2,3,4 1,2,3,4 1,2,3,4 etc Most western music is written in 4/4. What Bill Bailey is talking about here is that it changes to 7/4, so that then becomes 7 beats in each bar so you should be able to count 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 etc to the pulse in the music.

    I hope that makes sense? Its tricky to explain without being in person!

I can understand the Roopak being 7 beats from the syllables you presented but I can't get the 14 beats from the Jhoomra I was wondering if you could maybes explain it a bit further. Sorry if this is a stupid question mate but it is always interesting learning something new about music.

  • @Lualua25able The Taal Jhoomra and Ada Chautala which is 14 beats, but the different is the syllables are different, so for example:

    Jhumra is is a 14 matra tal that was once popular for slow kheyals. This has almost entirely been replaced by Ektal. It is divided into four vibhags of 3, 4, 3, and 4 matras (beats). These vibhags are denote by a clap, clap, wave and clap respectively.

  • @ibuchanan82: I mean seriously, to regard either Paul or Bill as anything else than a comedic genious (Paul doesn't really get to shine too much in room101 as much as e.g. in hignfy) would be rediculous. Both are easily in my top 5. Bill's expression is pretty funny though.

  • Well, don't know what anyone else thinks but I don't think so. The Bill is more of a crime-themed soap opera to me. Law and Order is FAR better.

  • @hazelangus Actually. The Bill used to be amazing! In 2009, it became a soap opera. It used to be brilliant. Series two was amazing. The 2004 ones were good to but, recently, it turned into a soap opera with more crime inside the station than outside. I'm still sad it's gone though!

  • @thatdrattedcat Hahaha, no, not even close! Law and Order is completely different. Like hazelangus says, The BIll is more like a soap opera, and there is no real courtroom setting , unlike Law and Order which has police detective and court room drama stuff too
