Hands down, if you were a kid in this era, you were growing up at THE best time to be a kid! It's so sad that the kids of today don't have the quality programming we did.
I may be the only person on earth who remembers a short-lived bumper series that had basketball players dribbling a ball that they dunked into a basket as the ball turned into a dough-nut. Wasn't it CBS in the very early 80's? They were a bit odd and didn't last very long....
@ChristiRich yes,in the 1981-1982 season, cbs aired adifferent set of bumpers, including a tortoise and hare bumper. i saw in in birmingham in the winter of 1982.
@ChristiRich yes,in the 1981-1982 season, cbs aired a different set of bumpers, including a tortoise and hare bumper. i saw in in birmingham in the winter of 1982.
The text bouncing artound at 00:29 gave me the creeps for some reason. Also, I love the "place commercial here" cards :)
On this note, does anyone remember which network had the bumper which showed a coach drawn in a sort of "School house rock" style which used to go "Time in! Now back to the program!"? I remember seeing that around 1980 or 1981
I recall one in which they look like an animated painting. Example: A basketball player dunking a donut into a coffee mug and eating the donut. What year was that?
The outer space/video game-themed bumpers from 1983-86 were the best. I always get nostalgic for old arcade games when seeing those.
I also liked the psychedelic paint can and the kids-in-the-control-room bumpers. Sadly, in 1989-90 they switched to these really generic bumpers with a still-frame of the show and "We'll Be Right Back" or something written on it. Really disappointing.
I actually made constructions of the paint-can bumper characters out of construction paper. It seemed easy enough, but this was before I knew what CGI was.
Wow...a huge chunk of my child encapsulated. I was born in '74, but I'm a military brat. I didn't actually live here in the U.S. until spring of 1980. Seeing those '79-'80 bumpers took me all the way back to kindergarten, back to watching what seemed like 12 hours of Looney Toons on Saturday morning. Kids today just don't know how good WE had it back then. I was able to watch from '80 to the very end of '83...then it was back overseas for 7 more years.
accually it is NOT missing, but I remember 2:34-2:39 with no voice over. That one of the 'paint can' was done when "Galaxy high" was on. The voice doing what sounds like saying 'galaxyhigh' also had something that squirted stuff out of its mouth. TOO BAD SOMEBODY DOESNT HAVE MOST OF THESE WITHOUT VOICE OVERS like I remember a lot of them.
where they are trying to shoot something, in a videogame, and it gets shot, (maybe) and makes some kinda pattern with boxes and stuff... NOW WHEN WAS THAT "POPEYE"? When was "Mighty Mouse?" because in the 80's it was taken off the air because of a DRUG SCANDALL!!! the thing that "sygo7g" says is right. Sometime during the 90's, this one other station would show old B&W stuff that had a lot of "Place Commercial Here" and stuff... nothing to do with saturday...
Personally, I liked the bumpers from the indivudual shows prior to 1979 as they were much more creative (especially if they were from shows produced by Filmation Studios). But these weren't too bad.
I used to watch cartonns on CBS as far back as I can remember. The only bumpers from the 80s that I didn't like were the 1986-87 ones with the crazy machines inside the paint can.

It just so happens that those generic bumpers are the ones that this clip compilation used. I specifically remember show-specific bumpers in 1987-88.
Also, I always found the 1988-89 bumpers a bit disappointing, because rather than go to a completely new concept, they just did a remake of the 1987-88 bumpers. You can tell it's the same set, but with different kids and different music. Of course, 1989-90 didn't even have network-wide bumpers, as each show had its own bumpers made by the shows themselves.
Oh, yeah, I definitely remember the individual bumpers from each of the shows themselves, especially the ones for Pee-wee's Playhouse (spoken by Pee-wee), Muppet Babies (by Baby Kermit) and Garfield and Friends (by Garfield). When going to a commercial during Garfield, he would say something like, "Here are some commercials and then... more of me."
there was 3 openings, but one was more commonly used. The one that starts "We're ready to-party! we're ready, we're ready, i hope you brought lots of spaghetti! spaghetti?"
Yes. I loved all the characters in the ready to party theme song from Gafield and US Acers! I remember the last theme song in the year 1995 was a Rap song for Garfield for being fat, lazy and eating lots of lasagna!
Half of these are before my time, but the "Space" ones are one of my earliest memories-- I was only two when I saw them in 1985, but I never forgot them.
Gilligan's Planet on CBS sat mornings was a little before my time.I was only 4 years old back in the year 1982. I remember Saturday Supercade from the years 1983-1985 very well on CBS sat morn.
