Im getting this camera tomorrow! I can't wait. I just bought last week the 14-24 2.8 and with this full frame camera it will be so wide. I've been using the d200 since 2005. I know the d800 comes out soon but the waiting period on it will be like a year probably.
LOK? I love that guy. I think he has loosened up somewhat over the years and he showed hints of sarcasm that cracks me up. It's nice to see someone like Lok grow and develop over the years. Keep up the good work man.
@1uk3 it WAS on craigslist. My mom gave me the money but the ad was removed. Someone bought it and it was in great condition too. Yeah but it was on Craigslist Toronto.
@WoWproductions21 yeah, lol conviced my mom to get it but then someone took it. But i found the buyer and it was a legit posting. But i'm seeing D3s' for $2000. Which is not bad.
I'm interested in photography but only as a beginner. What slr model do u recommend to someone that's a beginner but would like to have something thats easily upgradable once i need to go a little higher?
@Learning1987 I'm not sure if your asking this for everybody but I'm gonna answer it anyway. I would get the canon 550d because it's just an AWESOME camera.
@monibabdulrazaq for some reason the canon 550d is getting Alot of play from people because i see people shooting music videos and alot of other things also
Well..i've had my D700 for a few years now. Take it from me...it's worth it if you got the gigs to do and you just love photography. I have had a D50, D200 and D300...and out of all 3 the full frame of the D700 is unlacking whan i pop a lens off my old FM2. I use only primes, so the FF advantage is worth it 100%. Plus when you have been photographing for 25 years like me, your eye can just see the difference..pixel "myth" or not - this is my favorite digital SLR of all time. I am done buying!
@crispycritterz Having a pop-up flash on a professional camera means it loses a bit of its weather sealing capabilities. Water can seep in through the gaps and potentially damage the camera. A camera is only as weatherproof as its weakest link.
for those of you who have had experience with this camera, what you like to see in the D800 that isn't in this camera. I love the ISO performance of this camera, and 12mp is good enough for me. I don't care about video capabilities at all. I'm asking because there is a great discount on a D700/ 70-200 combo. ($400 off) Any replies will be greatly appreciated. thanks!
No pop-up flash on a professional camera is pretty lame. "Because it's a professional camera," is a weak argument. ALL DSLRs should have a pop-up flash. It can save your ass in a pinch.
Your video is quite good in that it would not only help a person make a buying decision but instruct an owner as well: I didn't know that I could press the INFO button twice to access settings. How easy! I love my D700 even more thanks to you. I hope you'll continue to make videos; they provide a real value to both the pro and enthusiast, and place your company in a very good light. Oh, and yes, half the world says "Neekon"; real photographers are more interested in useful content than minutiae.

im looking to upgrade to a full frame camera and was looking at the D700 i wont be purchasing a full frame camera until February after i get my other lens =] but i was wondering if there will be a new line of full frame camera's similar to this
@Kmendoza7 I too am looking at the d700! But IMO I think its smart to wait a month or two because the d700 replacement is hopefully coming lol but the d700 and d3 line are prolly the only fx cameras that nikon will be making just because the fx makes the cameras cost go up and who needs more thn a d700 or d3s/x. And I know canon makes a cam tht competes wit d700 but again IMO id take the Nikon anyday =)
@pmbazman15 yeh i guess ill wait for the upgrade... and yeh i dont think i'd ever switch over to a Canon I prefer Nikon but yeh thats just me i go nothing against Canon but i learnt photography with a Nikon D60 and have always been please with Nikon
@sasktank The Canon 7D is not bad but it's not even a Full Frame camera , If you want the direct competitor it's the Canon 5D ! You see the EOS 50D and D90 , EOS 7D and D300S , EOS 5D and D700 and finally the EOS1D Mark IV and D3X . Those are the real comparison :)
@sasktank hahaha canon?? no way man. nikon all the way. im buying this baby in a week, ive been working my ass off all summer long in order to have this camera when i start college
@sasktank FX sensor trumps everything. You obviously haven't been brought up in the film era where all the cameras were "FX" or "35mm". Also Nikon has superior AF system and incredible ISO performance. Infact, the FX sensor is capable of producing excellent pictures at ISO 3200.
The only thing which the D700 doesn't have is the ISO like in the Nikon D3, which can be upgraded to 102,400, the D700 doesn't have this feature, but I still like it.
@bluemystic7501 That is only true to a degree. I can shoot the exact same shot on 2 3 different cameras and get vastly different results the camera then become the biggest factor in how good my work is. I actually have a few cameras that i use in different situations simply because one camera will give fantastic results where another will not in a particular setting. If i was useless at photography then i would not get any good shots regardless of camera so that is where your comment is true.
@bluemystic7501 it's true what you say as far as light, composition, originality, object size and relationship concerns, but when it comes to signal to noise ratio, dynamic and tonal range, colour sensitivity and response, AF tracking and speed, light transmission, distortion, vignetting and aberration you better get yourself a good camera + lens. And the D700 is such a good camera so... the camera won't make you a better photographer but will deliver deeper images and that matters !
hey thanks for the video. Which Camera do you recomend for a budget under 1000 USD, that can take good picture but shoots HD videos and have a good performance shooting at night. Something like the Canon Mark III but cheaper
if you want to shoot at low light, get Pentax K-x. If you want to shoot landscape, get 20mega pixel rivals such as A850 and 5Dmark2. If you are a nikon devotee, get D90 who has wider dynamic range than D700. If you use full frame, you need high priced lens, good filters, big camera bag, expensive ISP monitor and a raw processing software, etc. all in all, it will cost you about 3 to 4times more than the camera itself. if your initial budget is only $2000, get APS-C camera. If $7000, get 5DM2.
What you lose with less mpx you gain in low-light performance - D700's far excels the low-light performance of 5Dmk2. Secondly I love the 3d-tracking-af which the Canon lacks.
And I thought the "megapixel myth" was pretty outdated. It's a sales argument the producers wants people to believe. Google on it if you don't believe me.
that's not true. you probably take Ken Rockwell's words too seriously. Actually, he made a comparison bet 5DMkII +16-35mm F2.8 and D700 +14-24mm F2.8. The result is obvious. Even though Nikkor 14-24mm is a better lens, 5D combination wins hands down. D700 just didn't have enough resolutions to fully appreciate the potential of 14-24mm.
But it's a little funny that you are referring to the same source(Ken). Megapixel myth is not to be taken to seriously and the other one (also from Ken) you should take seriously? Ken is not the only one writing about the MP myth.
the moral is that even a critic of megapixel myth prove himself to be wrong about megapixel. Higher megapixel means more resolution, if the lens is a good one.
I Agree, off course you get a better resolution. But in a real world application and to really see this resolution and the difference you would have to make really large print. LCD screen have way to few pixels to show this if your'e not zooming in.
And no matter how many MP's you got. A picture that's is out of focus is useless. I think the D700 has the upper hand here to (vs the 5D Mrk II) with the better AF system.
Still though, I think D700 and 5D Mrk II are awesome cameras both of them.
Another very important advantage of the D700 is that it has a tougher build. It will survive in environments with moist, dust etc compared to the D5 Mark II which has a good probability of dying if it gets hit by some rain drops. Still 5D Mark II is excellent for studio work with good lightning condition.
where are you getting this info that the 5D mark II has a high probability of dying from some rain drops? I shoot in the rain all the time and have never had any problems. Of course, I won't shoot my camera in a waterfall, but the d700 can't take a water fall too. I do agree with the d700 being tougher, I've used it extensively. But you make it sound like the 5D can't handle anything.
You're right. I might have stretched it little to far. The 5D MkII will handle most normal condition including some rain. Though, I have read some posts about failing 5d MkII caused by water though. Google on "Antarctica 2009 what worked" and you'll get a hit on "luminous-landscape". 6/26 of the 5D MkII onboard failed caused by water/humidity. There are more similar reports.
hi im a 17 year old student, studying photography and going to uni to study it, also work in jessops so know all the tecnical stuff about both cameras, however my only decision is wherther to go for the d300 with cropped sensor, or a d700 with full frame. i can affor it but am thinking if the extra £700 worth it? i think it is but just wanted to see what others say :)
Take into account that with the full frame sensor of the D700,you will have a smaller choice of lenses, that tend to be alot more expensive as well!If you had a budget of say 1500 quid,I would get the D90 body,SB900 flash,a good prime lense(50mm 1.4) and a couple of zooms-try to stay clear of the big range ones, for example with the 18-200mm there are image issues, due to the massive focal range.A pro photographer friend of mine swears by his trusty D40!! leaving his heavy D3 at home!!
I own neither yet. Hoping. To buy a d700 in the coming months. I've been researching and testing both cameras and more for a while. D700 is clearly the better camera. :)
I have and will never look for a DSLR based on it's ability to do video. I never understood that. I would get say a video camera. But, to each their own. This is a low ligh/high ISO gem. I'm shoot local musicians in Seattle, WA and this is the perfect camera for that. It all depends on what you are going to do with your camera. I also want to do off-camera flash work, so this is perfect albeit expensive option for the non-pro like me. Look for jeffmck at flickr for examples
U should upgrade to d90 before going further up, anything above d90 is for professional use, meaning there would be many features that an average person would not need at all, thus a waste of money. Anything above d90 is mostly huge increase in physical performance and small increase in image quality.
difference is d300s can do movie and has 7fps. d700 can do full frame and has lower noise and better quality and all that bla bla bla but for a 1k more, that is not something i need. d300s can do same quality. Some of the capability that d700 offers, 90% of the time i wont need it.
the lacking of a video mode is a good thing. filming with a 1.3kg DSLR is not practical at all, unless you have a viewfinder of sorts and a shoulder mount. plus, not having video would reduce the cost.
pretty much everything about the camera makes it better than the D60, other than the size and weight. the 2 cameras are in total different classes of cameras, so not a fair comparison.

@1individeo the mark iii is amazing, and its uncomparable. also, the lens is more important for low light. i recommend the d5000, with the kit

choline500 2 years ago
@choline500 5d mark 2 is good as long as you dont need to focus on anything in low light.
BigPreme 2 years ago
if you want to shoot at low light, get Pentax K-x. If $7000, get 5DM2.
choline500 2 years ago
get 5Dmark2 instead. 12 megapixels is pretty outdated.
choline500 2 years ago
What you lose with less mpx you gain in low-light performance - D700's far excels the low-light performance of 5Dmk2. Secondly I love the 3d-tracking-af which the Canon lacks.
kilobitti 2 years ago
And I thought the "megapixel myth" was pretty outdated. It's a sales argument the producers wants people to believe. Google on it if you don't believe me.
muddyclouds 2 years ago
that's not true. you probably take Ken Rockwell's words too seriously. Actually, he made a comparison bet 5DMkII +16-35mm F2.8 and D700 +14-24mm F2.8. The result is obvious. Even though Nikkor 14-24mm is a better lens, 5D combination wins hands down. D700 just didn't have enough resolutions to fully appreciate the potential of 14-24mm.
choline500 2 years ago
Hmm, where did I mention Ken Rockwell?
But it's a little funny that you are referring to the same source(Ken). Megapixel myth is not to be taken to seriously and the other one (also from Ken) you should take seriously? Ken is not the only one writing about the MP myth.
muddyclouds 2 years ago
the moral is that even a critic of megapixel myth prove himself to be wrong about megapixel. Higher megapixel means more resolution, if the lens is a good one.
choline500 2 years ago
I Agree, off course you get a better resolution. But in a real world application and to really see this resolution and the difference you would have to make really large print. LCD screen have way to few pixels to show this if your'e not zooming in.
And no matter how many MP's you got. A picture that's is out of focus is useless. I think the D700 has the upper hand here to (vs the 5D Mrk II) with the better AF system.
Still though, I think D700 and 5D Mrk II are awesome cameras both of them.
muddyclouds 2 years ago
Another very important advantage of the D700 is that it has a tougher build. It will survive in environments with moist, dust etc compared to the D5 Mark II which has a good probability of dying if it gets hit by some rain drops. Still 5D Mark II is excellent for studio work with good lightning condition.
muddyclouds 2 years ago
i agree. nikon cameras are usually tougher.
choline500 2 years ago 2
where are you getting this info that the 5D mark II has a high probability of dying from some rain drops? I shoot in the rain all the time and have never had any problems. Of course, I won't shoot my camera in a waterfall, but the d700 can't take a water fall too. I do agree with the d700 being tougher, I've used it extensively. But you make it sound like the 5D can't handle anything.
wilochow 2 years ago
You're right. I might have stretched it little to far. The 5D MkII will handle most normal condition including some rain. Though, I have read some posts about failing 5d MkII caused by water though. Google on "Antarctica 2009 what worked" and you'll get a hit on "luminous-landscape". 6/26 of the 5D MkII onboard failed caused by water/humidity. There are more similar reports.

(d700 or d300)
hi im a 17 year old student, studying photography and going to uni to study it, also work in jessops so know all the tecnical stuff about both cameras, however my only decision is wherther to go for the d300 with cropped sensor, or a d700 with full frame. i can affor it but am thinking if the extra £700 worth it? i think it is but just wanted to see what others say :)
thankyou

Take into account that with the full frame sensor of the D700,you will have a smaller choice of lenses, that tend to be alot more expensive as well!If you had a budget of say 1500 quid,I would get the D90 body,SB900 flash,a good prime lense(50mm 1.4) and a couple of zooms-try to stay clear of the big range ones, for example with the 18-200mm there are image issues, due to the massive focal range.A pro photographer friend of mine swears by his trusty D40!! leaving his heavy D3 at home!!
BogusBoy2121 2 years ago
Full frame lens are expensive vs the DX lens. If you have the money go for the D700. I predict d700 wont be replace until a long time.
crazyca0 2 years ago
With that I don't expect to pay again for a trial period RAW software.

I heard it's not so great, so I just purchased a 50mm 1.8
my next lense may also be a prime lense as I am hearing the zoom lenses are inferior

D700 > D300s.
wiggyster 2 years ago
lmao, I bet you say that because you own a D700 and not a D300s. xD
joshflighter 2 years ago
I own neither yet. Hoping. To buy a d700 in the coming months. I've been researching and testing both cameras and more for a while. D700 is clearly the better camera. :)
wiggyster 2 years ago
Just try the D300s. =p
Then we talk.

Hehe, welp, what ever you think you can make the better pic with. Thats what counts.

I have a nikon d60. After I learn the fundamentals of photography what would be a good camera to upgrade to?
904SF 2 years ago
U should upgrade to d90 before going further up, anything above d90 is for professional use, meaning there would be many features that an average person would not need at all, thus a waste of money. Anything above d90 is mostly huge increase in physical performance and small increase in image quality.

so whats the difference between d300s and d700?
904SF 2 years ago
difference is d300s can do movie and has 7fps. d700 can do full frame and has lower noise and better quality and all that bla bla bla but for a 1k more, that is not something i need. d300s can do same quality. Some of the capability that d700 offers, 90% of the time i wont need it.
BarrackObamah 2 years ago
d700 doesnt have video.. but it has a slightly bigger sensor, get a 300s
sethborneman123 2 years ago
the lacking of a video mode is a good thing. filming with a 1.3kg DSLR is not practical at all, unless you have a viewfinder of sorts and a shoulder mount. plus, not having video would reduce the cost.

why would they use a supercrappy lens on such a camera?
Yes, its 24-70
ForstaSvenskenIRymdn 2 years ago
not really crappy, it's much better than 18-55 for that wide to medium telephoto purpose. $1700 compared to only about $200

compared to the 24/70 its crap

Hey everyone i just did a video about the nikon D60... Please come and check it out...
Thanks
Lutherglukie 2 years ago
i really like the feel of the d300 and
most say they feel the same
the only prob with nikon that i see is
the cost of there lens vs canon's L series
the price dif from the 50d vs the d300 is worth the exstra 370 to me anyways
but canon 1190 vs nikon's 1730 for the 24-70 2.8 ? thats a big dif and the L are really nice
plus exstra 100 for the battery grip
and if you want to shoot 8fps then thats another 115 for the li-ion battery
socal1000 2 years ago
is there any thing that makes this a better camera than the d60?
lillen300 2 years ago
pretty much everything about the camera makes it better than the D60, other than the size and weight. the 2 cameras are in total different classes of cameras, so not a fair comparison.
