The word "POP" is actually an acronym for Popular reffering to the "POPULAR CULTURE" or "MAINSTREAM" so if mainsteam culture isnt listening to this as in like being played on the radio then its not pop ok? Damn it!!!
@tripo4389 firstly you need to check your definition of Acronym. Secondly, lets say for eg the Beyonce/Bieber/Usher etc had recorded all their tracks but chose to never release them or show them to anyone. In this instance these records would've never been heard on the radio or in 'mainstream culture' and would therefore by your definition not be pop music because they did not achieve popularity, By this example we can see that the definition of pop has nothing to do with how popular it is !
@merelyateacher Hey I'm not exactly sure what makes you think that hip hop is pop, but you're comparing apples to toilet paper. They're not even remotely similar. In fact, fundamentally, they're polar opposites. The difference between the two is the difference between the profound and the superficial. It's the difference between vegetables and candy. Hopefully that'll help you understand because I don't have enough characters to explain
@tripo4389 well put man. This clown has a wide variety of arguments logically proving him wrong, but he keeps comin back for more! bahaha. Oh well, we'll just have to keep teaching this "teacher" till he understands what's up

@merelyateacher This is not "basically pop"....a structural similarity can be found if you excise its segments and place them in a formula.....but a similarity in structure to pop music does not make it pop music. Your logic fails when you consider the fact that 90% of hip hop music follows the intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus scheme. By your logic, almost all underground hip hop is pop. This is completely untrue. Don't speak on things you know nothing about son.

@dsmooothh now let's not get tense homosapien. ive been listening hip-hop since 79 so forgive me for having an opinion. hip hop is a form of popular music
exactly because it adheres to the structure mentioned. rap music is a 'style' of the 'genre' Pop along with reggae, soul, rnb etc and this has nothing to do with popularity . Genres such as classical, jazz, minimalism do not share the structural traits of pop and can be set apart but the difference between hip hop and pop is merely stylistic.
@merelyateacher Hip hop is not a style of the pop genre, and the difference is not merely stylistic. Even if the difference is stylistic, when it comes to artistic expression, stylistic difference is huge. I don't know how much clearer i make this...I honestly think you are making a huge stretch by saying hip hop is basically pop.

@dsmoooth- hip hop in its original form (MCs rapping over breaks being cut up) is agreeably not Pop as it has a different structure. Other recorded examples in the 80s also used different structures and are not really Pop. But in a rap track with Pop song structure, rapping instead of singing simply creates stylistic variation. There are many styles and expressions of pop that sound poles apart but from an academic perspective, Structure defines genre whilst style is a sub-classification thereof
@merelyateacher If you want to get academic, then Merriam-Webster has more academic credibility than you. It defines genre as: a category of artistic, musical, or literary composition characterized by a particular style, form, or content.
Now, notice that genre is, in FACT, characterized by style. Since you have already admitted hip hop and pop are different stylistically, you just proved my point.
@dsmooothh - fair point - but; by your given definition we are both right as it says "characterised by a particular style, FORM or content". In musicology, Form is a by-word for Structure.
So when I stated it is "basically pop", my assertion is still upheld by the 'fact' (as you call the word of an online dictionary) that genre is indeed defined by form/structure as well as style. What is not stated, is in what instances 'form' is the definer and in what instances 'style' is the definer.
@merelyateacher Style differs between genres, and, as admitted by you, pop and hip hop are clearly stylistically different. As if that's not enough to have you agree with me, your whole argument is based on the assertion that they have the same form or structure. Structurally, hip hop is based on choruses laced with 16 bar rhythmical talking verses. Rhythmical talking is different that pop singing in terms of style AND form. Also, the content is completely different, to top it off.
@dsmooothh - ignoring for a moment that rap music is 1 of the most popular forms of music and that it adheres to pop music structure. rap and pop both typically have 4-8 bar intros, 16 bar verses, 8 bar choruses etc. During which both styles typically feature repeated measures, 4/4 time signatures, rhyming couplets and diatonic tonality. both typically use drum kits, basslines and accompaniment. the difference between rapping and singing is basically a matter of sustained pitches.
@merelyateacher Your definition of Pop is correct but no one knows what your saying when your definition of Pop is ANY major or dominant culture vs the general mass market mainstreaming and one stop- 7/11 culture; You never made the difference
FYI : the best teachers make learning fun and easy.
@uknowo - i don't understand what your saying ? read it back to yourself. particularly when you say
"your definition of Pop is ANY major or dominant culture vs the general mass market mainstreaming and one stop- 7/11 culture". Where does the versus come into it ? What are you saying I'm saying ? Confused...
contd. - for analogies sake, consider if you will - 2 pairs of trousers; 1 pair made of cordueroy, one of silk. 1 stripey, the other spotty. 1 with tassels on the side, one with side pockets, 1 with fur lining, 1 with cotton. 1 with a zip, the other with press studs. 1 tight, 1 baggy. in this instance, content, style and material can be described as very different, but both are instantly recognisable as pairs of trousers if they have the same basic structure (2 legs, a crotch and an ass plate.)
