@tnfishing1 Howdy, 30 lb test monofilament is good. Some folks prefer 10 lbs higher, others 10 lbs lower. More important than the line size is a reel with a good, smooth drag. If you have a reel with a sticky drag, a 15 lb king could break 40 lb test.
I live on the TX coast and have caught hundreds of these fish in the last several years. I can tell you you from much experience that the way ichthmus153 is fishing for the kings is by far the most effective method for this species. That being said, they can be caught on almost any lure or live bait. If I run out of ribbon fish I use anything shiny such as a large spoon or silver/black or silver/blue diving bait of any kind. Just my two cents
@droddy1972 thanks for the helpful comment! I was actually in the Gulf today (out of Freeport) and caught 0 kingfish :( Talked to one group who were using live bait and had caught 1 king, but they said the fishing was tough.
@bottomgunner A purple plastic squid, 8-10 inches long, trolled about 8-12 knots would catch all three plus mahi mahi. Off-white and green/yellow are also some good colors.
@bottomgunner If I had to pick one artifical bait, I would pick a plastic squid, trolled at 8 to 12 knots. I haven't done much trolling with artificial baits, so someone else who reads this may have other recommendations, but from what I 've seen, there's a huge variety of pelagics that just can't turn down a squid!
@elvinsmatthew , it's a king mackeral, and in Texas we just call them "kings" or "kingfish". What kind of fish is the Australian kingfish, is it like an amberjack?
@ichthmus153 its in the same family as the amberjack there built like a torpedo with a yellow tail. what we call king mackeral here is also known as the spannish mackeral. look up yelowtail kingfish on youtube
@jaredbolen that is correct Jared. King mackeral and spanish mackeral are very similar, possibly descendents of an original created kind. Spanish mackeral are much smaller than kings, but their colors are really cool with the yellow spots and black dorsal fins.
@ichthmus153 Here in aussie what we call a kingfish has a torpedo shaped body and a yellow tail there in the same family as the amberjack and sampson fish. what we call king mackrel here is known as the spannish mackeral
My boat is the same size, but it can go farther and can face up to 7' waves. We are about to try to catch King Mackerel! My first time targeting Kings. I have caught about 10 Spanish and 10 Bluefish so far in North Carolina.
i'd like to start off by saying thanks for the vid i hope you make more about kingfishing. but also do u think it's possible to flat line or free line ribbon fish aswell??
Freelining is definitely an option. I do have another kingfish video titled "How to Catch, Cook, and Clean a Kingfish", and in that I am drift fishing, just letting the wind push my boat along, with a live mullet just inches beneath the surface. You can do this with or without a weight, or put out two poles, one with and one without a weight. In the summer, after the sun has been up a few hours, the kings may go beneath the thermocline, about 30 ft down or so. Downriggers work too.
Aww, come on, oil rigs are beautiful! Especially if you put a mask and fins on and take a look underneath. If you do that, you will call them "oil reefs". The diversity of fishes and invertebrates the live around an on them is nothing short of spectacular.
cool video. been deckhanding in surfside for years myself. but when it comes to big kingfish.... hardtails or blue runners w/e u wana call em. 3kings over 55lbs. last june at tall rock.
we usually use 7/0 mustad J hooks. i dunno the exact model. large trebles also work too but i prefer j hooks as they have a bigger bite. we rig em with single strand stainless steel wire.
yes i usually catch the shad about a few days before i go and it its pretty good bait for both redsnappers and kings but you need some good size shads like about 5 inches they are really good
hey, you can also use shad as an alternative bait and i found it easy to catch em with a float.. i have the line about 12 ft deep and i tie a bottle on it.. if you see the bottle moving you just wait for it to hit hard
what pound line should i use for kings?

do you have a weight on there and if so what size?

@Toolcarlos no weight, but sometimes it helps to put a weight on, especially if they are down deep.

how big is your boat

It's a 25' boat with a tunnel hull. It is designed for shallow bay fishing, but on calm days, it's a blast in the Gulf of Mexico.
