I've been doing this method on a 70004 for quiet some time(says that a report indicates that you should do 5 hits), not no avail after 1-2 hours of doing this...What am I doing wrong that the chest doesn't even spawn?
Cure method works 100%..I don't deny that this also works but it's also luck if you get it (when you get hit by those annoying bats).I did spend days on this method and I decided to do some research and hours of reading to do the other method which is the Cure method (credited to someone who discovered it) and it really works faster and 100%. I did this method (shown on this video for more challenge :)..anyway, amazing vid, good thinking, and really helpful! You need PATIENCE in any method! :D

I'd just like to thank you for posting this video and creating the FAQ, it has helped me tremendously. Thanks to your advice I've been able to fully equip each member of my main party with a Zodiac Spear. I managed unlock the spears in 50 mins, the trouble was spawning the chest.

Why do we need to hit the character twice before entering the zone that contains the chest? Does this guarantee the chest will spawn? Does this work for every rare chest to spawn? Thank you!
Nice. I am going to try this straight away. I bought this game few weeks ago and few hours ago i slayed my 10th esper and now i am allowed to enter this area^^. Erm... one question, if u have a shield and u start running to that area and the first monster at begging hits u and u block it, will it mess up the RNG?
I've tried for 3 hours to get the chest spawned, it never showed up. I've tried with all the combinations with my 75004 but it doesn't work. Maybe my PS2 or my disc broke up, I don't know...
It's just luck unfortunately, once the chest is spawned from there you can practically guarantee that you'll unlock a ZS providing you follow the advice from the FAQ.
50001 and we have tried both possible methods. The hitting yourself 3 times, and not hitting yourself. Everything is set up. What can we do to get the chest to spawn?

If you're getting a 6 hit combo it means that your health is below 25%. You're taking too much damage on the way to the chest so put the game speed on slow whilst you run. Also make sure your resets aren't soft resets. You MUST power the ps2 down each time or you won't reset the RNG.
I have one of those flat thin PS2...so I'm guessing this method is absolute to me. Although I tried the first time I guess I have the TRNG :c when I hit myself twice on before entering Balthier ended up doing a three hit combo right when the game started. (Yes, I resetted the game before I attempted this.) So...am I all out of hope? :x
I have one of those flat thin ps2 as well, I have gotten 2 Zodiac Spears using this method. I just don't hit myelf before entering, there is a link in the description that shows you how many times you should hit yourself depending on what model your ps2 is.

i checked and all i have on him and all he has is grand armor and zodiac shield and cameo belt but still no combo i also discoverd that my game is the collectors edition

The game should be the same and shouldn't make a difference. However, I have noticed one thing. Your slim is the same series as one that a friend of mine had and he was always around 20 movements of the RNG ahead of me. Try starting your count around 20 and see if the combos fall into one of the patterns. Other than that I have no idea what you should do.
I need help i did everything and got the ZS chest spawn but when i try doing the combos there totally diffrent and not even close to ones that you have, but worst of all

Make sure you are resetting by turning the ps2 OFF!! A soft reset is not good enough. If that isn't the problem then the likely answer is that one of your characters has regen. This buff messes with the RNG so make sure no one has been buffed with regen; also make sure no one is wearing equipment which has the regen buff on it.
@FF12GM How on earth did you figure out how to do this procedure? This is insane that you managed to figure this out. Your name isn't a hyperbole at all -- you really are the master of ff12.
i´m having trouble spawning the treasure i have 2 hit myself 2 times for the 30004 version before the dig phase 2 and the stupid treasure doesn´t show up if this happens should i soft reset or cold start?
You had more than likely been hit by the abysteels along the way and your health had dropped below 25%. Once your HP drops below that level combos are increased which means the RNG moves differently. Always make sure your health is above 25% before you start hitting yourself. If it's lower, then use an X Potion.

Ok I dont understand. I've done everything exactly as you have. Everything. Two hits before entering. Full resets. not engaging any enemies and turning off all gambits. Glitching to rid myself of enemies. Attacking myself with the Cameo Belt and a shield. And attempting it when the chest spawns. And I Am not getting a single one of ur combos. Not one. This last time I followed you exactly, got a 3 hit combo after just 7 hits, something not on our charts, then failed to get another combo
First of all check that your characters don't have any piece of equipment on that has Regen, like the Renewing Morion etc. Regen screws the RNG up. Second, a reset means turning your PS2 OFF and then starting it again. Returning to title screen will not work. Third, if you're using a PS3 the patterns will be completely different 99% of the time.
@FF12GM Its the Regen. That must be what's doing it. My characters constantly have Float, Regen, Bubble, Faith, Bravery, Haste, Protect and Shell on them. They arent casting it because i disabled the Gambits but Ashe has had Regen on her every time because it hasnt worn off. Thanks.

The earliest you can get this done is after getting the Treaty Blade and the Espers you'll need to defeat are Belias, Mateus, Adrammelech, Zalera, Cuchulainn, Zeromus, Exodus, Chaos, Shemhazai and Ultima. You can't get in there any earlier.
So, when doing this, if you want buffs, should you cast them before saving at that crystal, or can you cast them before hitting yourself for the first time?
@FF12GM I did what you advised me but I still can't spawn the chest. I have 75001 ps2 model and it says that "don't hit self at all" and it still not spawning. I didn't use immobilize on any character also. It seems to me that there is no chest on the secret mine area (on my game). ...Maybe my game is defected at that area? (O_O)
The Brawler licence is the one that increases the damage you do from unarmed combat. It cost 90 LP and is found in the bottom left of the augments section on the licence board.

Hey FF12GM, i really need your help, my ps2 scph is 77004 and i did all the things that are in the list in the description but i cant respawn the chest. I dont know why.
I got a zodiac spear because i did 5 hits, the 1st was blocked because i wasnt with cameo belt, when i put cameo belt did my 2º and 3º normal hit then my 4º was a combo of 3 hits then my last and 5º hit was a normal hit. That made it spawn and i cant find a Rng method to spawn it again. Really need your help.

It does work with the PS3 but the patterns are mostly different. I haven't studied the PS3 so it might be a good idea to read the thread linked in the vid description. I think there is reference to it there.
To make it easier to dodge the first few abysteels so you don't take too many hits on the way to the chest. The fewer hits you take the easier it is to keep track of the RNG movements.
Ah, I just twigged what you meant. The chest has already spawned (or not) by the time I have entered the area where the Abysteels are. Getting hit by one makes no difference to the appearance of the chest.
Experiment. Try entering without hitting yourself for say 10 times. Then do it hitting yourself once, then twice etc.....eventually you will find the best strategy for finding the chest. I can't do this testing for you as I don't have the model you have.
i think that the times you should hit yourself before entering the area doesn't determine so certainly the spawning of the chest or not... i checked in the page in which you have written the times i should hit myself, that is 0, but the chest does not appear... and tried also with different numbers...
moreover... the fact itself you cross one area (and thus two "warp lines") between the saving point and the chest's area changes the random number...
I'm not even going to attempt to explain why hitting yourself works other than to say that each hit moves the RNG along. The idea is to get the RNG into a position so that when you cross the line into the Phase 2 Dig the chest will appear. Sure, there are other things to take into account but this way really does help the chest to appear more often than the 10%. If you want iot to appear evertime then you should read about Cure Shifting in the linked thread.

i've decided that the zodiac spear is too cumbersome to get unless you have absolutely NOTHING else to do... but if you did get it, Kudos to you. i don't have that kind of patience or determination
I have no idea where you are from but your attitude is typical of an american teenager who wants instant gratification. If it involves any effort at all they just quit and make some excuse like "It's not worth it" or "it's too cumbersome to get".

Doesn't make any difference having Reddas in the party as long as you don't allow him to attack. I suggest using Niho + Gold Needle on him to stone him and just add one to your hit count.

I'm confused. So whats the pattern you're suppose to get when you're near the chest and hitting yoruself? I went to your forum but it only has how many times you're suppose to hit yourself before entering the room with the chest.

@trivorce999 Whichever character you immobilise, make sure they are off the minimap when you switch leaders. If you do that the enemies will disappear.
i can't get the chest to appear at all. i have tried like 50 times changing the times i hit myself from 2 to 3 to 1 to 4. NONE of them have worked! i haven't seen the chest once yet. i have a 50001 model.....
Hi just tried your technique not long ago. I done it exactly as you done it and it worked. Second time I tried it the thing wouldn't spawn. My model is 75003 which I noticed wasn't on the list. I tried every combination of ... hitting myself but it only seemed to work that one time. I did leave shortly after getting the spear though so I dunno if that was bad. It's driving me mad. Please help thanks!
@Uberjetsu If it worked once there is no reason why it shouldn't work again. If you want to guarantee the chest appearing then I suggest you read the thread linked in the video description.

Your guide worked perfect for me. The only dificulty is the chest to be there and that's the stange thing because I read that the spawn possibility is 10% and I had about 50 tries with only one appearance. Finally I found the trick with 3 hits before enter (2 treasures in 5 tries) and I've got my second spear (two with one turnesol are enough for my front line). I have 50004 series (bought it second hand with chip).
Please help me, my PS2 version is 90006, and the guide said I shouldn't hit myself. I shouldn't myself before entering Phase 2 Dig or before opening the chest?

I got a question: All my members are level 99, and if i attack myself with 1 of them i will always hit myself with like 2000, what do i have to do? Do I have to wear special armour or something? And does it matter witch member I choose?
@DamnICantFly Wear any shield plus the cameo belt and you'll do zero damage with good armour. Don't forget to equip the diamond armlet again before opening the chest.
So..um...basically... wait, so there's these patterns and if any of them hit a combo of 5 around 70-80 mark, it's a pattern to get the zodiac spear? Just clarifying...and when you mean using cure, do you mean it's like resetting after finding out the pattern is no good or it's not following a standard good pattern?
@Aventerra01 Just follow the patterns. If you use cure it shifts from a bad pattern to the next one. Sometimes it takes more than one cure to move to a good pattern.

Equip yourself with any shield. By having something in your hand the Brawler
licence is negated and your damage output will be vastly reduced. Now you need
to equip yourself with a Cameo Belt so that you won't block any attacks. If you
don't have one they can be bought from the Leapin' Bangaa in Balfonheim Port,
from the Stranded SeeQ in Old Archades (after you have the Treaty Blade) or it
is a Rare Drop from Archaeoaevis in Zertinan Caverns.

Always turn off and reboot. If you soft reset, it won't work because you're not resetting the RNG back to the start.

Make sure you are resetting by turning the ps2 OFF!! A soft reset is not good enough. If that isn't the problem then the likely answer is that one of your characters has regen. This buff messes with the RNG so make sure no one has been buffed with regen; also make sure no one is wearing equipment which has the regen buff on it.

i´m having trouble spawning the treasure i have 2 hit myself 2 times for the 30004 version before the dig phase 2 and the stupid treasure doesn´t show up if this happens should i soft reset or cold start?

Always cold start. Also, if the chest keeps refusing to show up, just change the amount of times you hit yourself. Experiment.

You had more than likely been hit by the abysteels along the way and your health had dropped below 25%. Once your HP drops below that level combos are increased which means the RNG moves differently. Always make sure your health is above 25% before you start hitting yourself. If it's lower, then use an X Potion.

Ok I dont understand. I've done everything exactly as you have. Everything. Two hits before entering. Full resets. not engaging any enemies and turning off all gambits. Glitching to rid myself of enemies. Attacking myself with the Cameo Belt and a shield. And attempting it when the chest spawns. And I Am not getting a single one of ur combos. Not one. This last time I followed you exactly, got a 3 hit combo after just 7 hits, something not on our charts, then failed to get another combo

First of all check that your characters don't have any piece of equipment on that has Regen, like the Renewing Morion etc. Regen screws the RNG up. Second, a reset means turning your PS2 OFF and then starting it again. Returning to title screen will not work. Third, if you're using a PS3 the patterns will be completely different 99% of the time.

@FF12GM Its the Regen. That must be what's doing it. My characters constantly have Float, Regen, Bubble, Faith, Bravery, Haste, Protect and Shell on them. They arent casting it because i disabled the Gambits but Ashe has had Regen on her every time because it hasnt worn off. Thanks.

Complete the Mindflayer hunt and then defeat 10 Espers. After that, go and speak to Geomancer Yugelu in Jahara and he'll have the gate opened for you. The earliest you can get this done is after getting the Treaty Blade and the Espers you'll need to defeat are Belias, Mateus, Adrammelech, Zalera, Cuchulainn, Zeromus, Exodus, Chaos, Shemhazai and Ultima. You can't get in there any earlier.

@FF12GM I did what you advised me but I still can't spawn the chest. I have 75001 ps2 model and it says that "don't hit self at all" and it still not spawning. I didn't use immobilize on any character also. It seems to me that there is no chest on the secret mine area (on my game). ...Maybe my game is defected at that area? (O_O)

The Brawler licence is the one that increases the damage you do from unarmed combat. It cost 90 LP and is found in the bottom left of the augments section on the licence board.

Hey FF12GM, i really need your help, my ps2 scph is 77004 and i did all the things that are in the list in the description but i cant respawn the chest. I dont know why.
I got a zodiac spear because i did 5 hits, the 1st was blocked because i wasnt with cameo belt, when i put cameo belt did my 2º and 3º normal hit then my 4º was a combo of 3 hits then my last and 5º hit was a normal hit. That made it spawn and i cant find a Rng method to spawn it again. Really need your help.

Equip yourself with any shield. By having something in your hand the Brawler
licence is negated and your damage output will be vastly reduced. Now you need
to equip yourself with a Cameo Belt so that you won't block any attacks. If you
don't have one they can be bought from the Leapin' Bangaa in Balfonheim Port,
from the Stranded SeeQ in Old Archades (after you have the Treaty Blade) or it
is a Rare Drop from Archaeoaevis in Zertinan Caverns.

To make it easier to dodge the first few abysteels so you don't take too many hits on the way to the chest. The fewer hits you take the easier it is to keep track of the RNG movements.

I just add one to the hit count for each hit before I start counting when I hit myself. It's not perfectly accurate but it's damned close.

Ah, I just twigged what you meant. The chest has already spawned (or not) by the time I have entered the area where the Abysteels are. Getting hit by one makes no difference to the appearance of the chest.

Experiment. Try entering without hitting yourself for say 10 times. Then do it hitting yourself once, then twice etc.....eventually you will find the best strategy for finding the chest. I can't do this testing for you as I don't have the model you have.

i think that the times you should hit yourself before entering the area doesn't determine so certainly the spawning of the chest or not... i checked in the page in which you have written the times i should hit myself, that is 0, but the chest does not appear... and tried also with different numbers...
moreover... the fact itself you cross one area (and thus two "warp lines") between the saving point and the chest's area changes the random number...

I'm not even going to attempt to explain why hitting yourself works other than to say that each hit moves the RNG along. The idea is to get the RNG into a position so that when you cross the line into the Phase 2 Dig the chest will appear. Sure, there are other things to take into account but this way really does help the chest to appear more often than the 10%. If you want iot to appear evertime then you should read about Cure Shifting in the linked thread.

Also, crossing the zone lines is already taken into account. The RNG moves forward the equivalent of one hit when you cross the lines.

Doesn't make any difference having Reddas in the party as long as you don't allow him to attack. I suggest using Niho + Gold Needle on him to stone him and just add one to your hit count.

@trivorce999 Whichever character you immobilise, make sure they are off the minimap when you switch leaders. If you do that the enemies will disappear.

i can't get the chest to appear at all. i have tried like 50 times changing the times i hit myself from 2 to 3 to 1 to 4. NONE of them have worked! i haven't seen the chest once yet. i have a 50001 model.....

Hi just tried your technique not long ago. I done it exactly as you done it and it worked. Second time I tried it the thing wouldn't spawn. My model is 75003 which I noticed wasn't on the list. I tried every combination of ... hitting myself but it only seemed to work that one time. I did leave shortly after getting the spear though so I dunno if that was bad. It's driving me mad. Please help thanks!

Your guide worked perfect for me. The only dificulty is the chest to be there and that's the stange thing because I read that the spawn possibility is 10% and I had about 50 tries with only one appearance. Finally I found the trick with 3 hits before enter (2 treasures in 5 tries) and I've got my second spear (two with one turnesol are enough for my front line). I have 50004 series (bought it second hand with chip).

I got a question: All my members are level 99, and if i attack myself with 1 of them i will always hit myself with like 2000, what do i have to do? Do I have to wear special armour or something? And does it matter witch member I choose?

So..um...basically... wait, so there's these patterns and if any of them hit a combo of 5 around 70-80 mark, it's a pattern to get the zodiac spear? Just clarifying...and when you mean using cure, do you mean it's like resetting after finding out the pattern is no good or it's not following a standard good pattern?

@Aventerra01 Just follow the patterns. If you use cure it shifts from a bad pattern to the next one. Sometimes it takes more than one cure to move to a good pattern.
