That was more of a draw as Britain gave up its right to control Afghan foreign relations. As Britain was mainly concerned with Russia & the Russian Empire was collapsing at the time it was not too bad a sacrifice. But the Durand line was confirmed as the border even though it gave a chunk of Afghan territory to Britain. That part is now a province of Pakistan.

@EveGallente That is the Regimental Sergeant-major who is the chief Warrant Officer for the battalion responsible for discipline, drill, marching etc. Technically junior to any commissioned officer but in fact second only to the Colonel in authority. I think you can just make out his rank badge (the Royal Coat of Arms) on his right shoulder sometimes called "The fried egg" because of its appearance.

That they were there to watch the Irish is at best half true. The truth is the British (English) Parliament would not pay for or approve a regular army exist in England so they ordered the Irish Parliament to have one "For their own protection" & borrowed it whenever they needed.
@seirbeach This continued until the the French Revolution gave them a fright and they ringed all the main British Industrial cities with defended barracks for 100,000 men. As more of the army was stationed on the mainland recruiting in Ireland dropped off. There were no large training area in England until WW1 when there were just too many men for the usual training areas in Ireland plus the transport costs just did not make sense.

@MrJimmyboy1972 The 3rd war in 1919 was stirred up by Turkish & German agents & the Afghans prepared to invade India. That was more of a draw as Britain gave up its right to control Afghan foreign relations. As Britain was mainly concerned with Russia & the Russian Empire was collapsing at the time it was not too bad a sacrifice. But the Durand line was confirmed as the border even though it gave a chunk of Afghan territory to Britain. That part is now a province of Pakistan.

He marched to Kabul, tried & hanged Afghans & kicked the ---- out of any Afghan who got in his way. True, a 2000 strong British force was wiped out because their Afghan allies deserted - sound familiar? But the treaty settled the Afghan border, gave Britain control of Afghan foreign relations & peace for 40 years. As wars go it was a fair result.

@EveGallente That is the Regimental Sergeant-major who is the chief Warrant Officer for the battalion responsible for discipline, drill, marching etc. Technically junior to any commissioned officer but in fact second only to the Colonel in authority. I think you can just make out his rank badge (the Royal Coat of Arms) on his right shoulder sometimes called "The fried egg" because of its appearance.

I'd thought it was about a quarter.Now with the peace process entrenched, recruitment from the irish republic is reported never to be so high.

@seirbeach That would be about right because the British Army was stationed in Ireland & armies recruit from the areas they are stationed. That they were there to watch the Irish is at best half true. The truth is the British (English) Parliament would not pay for or approve a regular army exist in England so they ordered the Irish Parliament to have one "For their own protection" & borrowed it whenever they needed.

@seirbeach This continued until the the French Revolution gave them a fright and they ringed all the main British Industrial cities with defended barracks for 100,000 men. As more of the army was stationed on the mainland recruiting in Ireland dropped off. There were no large training area in England until WW1 when there were just too many men for the usual training areas in Ireland plus the transport costs just did not make sense.
