  • Thank God someone turned off Ronson's guitar for 95% of the song.

  • Not so good!!

  • I love seans voice.

  • I like Sean Lennon, but I've gotta admit, this might be the best his voice has EVER sounded.

  • @TheBackseatJesus I agree...while his vocals are not great on this it may well be the best he ever sounded. Like I keep telling people....Sean Lennon sings well......it's his TONE that is terrible. Just like Bob Dylan has a good voice and singe in tune....but it's his "tone" that makes him sound miserable. People have to learn the difference between singing in tune & tone.....one is no good with out the other....another example....George Harrison; great tone.....but not so good singing

  • Love Sean's voice in this large composition with orchestra. Friend's intro, sweet and humble. This is on my favorites. Super.

  • beach boys did the original i believe

  • Nice version. Nice to know that sean loves Brian Wilson/Beach Boys music. Quite flattering since he is the son of such a talent. This orchestra rocks, for sure!

  • I don't care who sings it...this is a fantastic song.

  • Can't compare to Ray Charles singing it. Holy shit balls that is the version that rocks the house!

  • wow. the talent gene didn't hit the younger Lennon. mediocre bar version of this.

  • that was at least 2 dimensions below carl wilson

  • @anonymusum interesting, as carl doesn't sing it.

  • one of the composers of this song, just told me me he likes this version.

  • I have more soul in my pinkie toe, jammed within a tight new shoe! I sing in a 6-member band and have for years. This Bro is absent of soul. You show me an orchestra like that, I will have a major career . . . and my last name is not Lennon.

  • I just watched Ray Charles do this song live . . . and wholly f&%$! Sean's rendition is lower than a highly desired kareoke version . . . it is bad high school talent show. Please, please , please . . . dude please sail on . . . .

  • Dude, I so want you to succeed. But, that is so very . . . meek. So . . . . meek. Watch EJ do this. You will crap your pants. I know you are in a great shadow. Regardless, this performance was so meek and lacklustre. Please do not do it again, okay?

  • 素晴らしい!

  • Hey DC Laurie try to not be a douchenozzle your entire life. Thanks.

  • Insulting that this commie sings the Beach Boys .

  • he doesn't have his dads voice , they sound totally different.

  • Wow! What a great musical idea was this! And when performed it absolutely lived up to its promise.

  • Thank God he took after his dad and not his mom...

  • there just is no bad version of this song.

  • kk

  • Damn Sean is greatly talented

  • I bet his dad would be proud of him! :L

  • Thank God someone turned off Ronson's guitar. Good thing they did not tell him. He still thinks he can be heard! LOL.

  • THAT RULES!!!!!!

  • Love this live!! I had no real idea that Sean Lennon is a gifted singer in his own right.

  • @acarouselofantics Sean's two solo albums — Into the Sun and Friendly Fire — are good albums. I highly recommend them

  • Thanks to whoever posted this on here.....I love this song and this was very well performed.....I got goosebumps. This song is my all time favoritye Beach Boy song!

  • triple genius

  • thank you! a timeless song done in a timeless way. sail on!

  • Best version of this song.

  • Love the tune....love the arrangement.........

  • Mark and Sean should.do a record,Mark can produce it,Mark you did a very cool job on Duran Duran.Sean need 's a great producer..Peace and love

  • @suferdave

You said it. Sean and Mark should do a record together.

  • Beauty and Majesty on a Beach Boy Classic....the Classic cover

  • Sail on Sean & Mark

  • Sean looks like Joaquin Phoenix with his beard

  • Best something in between (sets!)

  • Epic beard.

  • mark + sean = epic !!!!!!

  • Basically what I want to say is...Basically, Sean Lennon sucks and everybody knows it. JULIAN Lennon had more talent in one of his dumps than this guy.

  • @TopBrassFunk basically you're wrongXD

  • @TopBrassFunk all i have to do is listen to a couple songs by sean, then some by julian, and you know julian was awful.

  • @mangoshakess

    Julian was great too.

  • What a powerful, soulful performance. Brian, Carl , Blondie et al would be proud of this rendition.

  • Mikebb5m John would have been the proudest, though. Go listen to "Beautiful Boy" on Double Fantasy and try not to cry. It's tough.

  • Sweet - great rendition of a fine song...

  • What a great version of this great song...Timeless

& the orchestra's added power is the cherry on the icing.

    "Fantastic"

  • For real, everyone should stfu about his parents, he's clearly talented in his own right. Some of his solo stuff is definitely on par in quality with anything they did.

  • Ummm did Jesus come back- that much hair is not CUTE....

  • people love the Lennons too much, in order to have a link with JL. Everybody relax!

  • i saw sean supporting air in the late 1990s in manchester and he was great and also Air were too...a great night

  • Oh Sweetheart, you are kind to me. I did misunderstand and you are precious to not throw me under the bus for sounding like such an a=hole..Of course in this light, I get it and agree actually about Sean. In any event I would never think you stupid. But thanks for making it clear to me.

  • Need to lose the orchestra.

  • Best version, but could be better.

  • He's vocally "okay", I wouldn't say more. Vocally, fact is that I've heard better, many. He can play a piano, hold a tune and has some good moments. Why care if he is John Lennon's son, he is just another musician to me, as am I.

  • My comment was about the interpretation of the song, not its authorship. Surprised you couldn't spot that. Anyway if you read the previous posts you'll see plenty of references to Brian Wilson. I'm old enough to remember the vinyl single from '73, so can I be excused the research? And I always prefer the cretins on YouTube to the zealots.

  • Don't want to be mean or anything but this song needs soul. He has a pretty voice. There's plenty of Beach Boys songs he could've chosen that would suit a pretty voice. This is just ok.

  • @madahpesojnothgual This song has more soul in it than you may have in your little toe. Unbelievable you don't get it. Listen to Brian do it and tell me it has no soul. One of the best.

  • @tabacblonde Oh sorry i didn't mean to say it like that. I meant this song requires a person with a soulful voice and Sean doesn't deliver not that the song itself needs soul. I would never say something that stupid.

  • @tabacblonde Actually I am the fool, Brian didn't do the original on this song anyway, he wrote it and I've seen him perform it, but it was Blondie Chapin who did it and so beautifully and soulfully I think anyway.

  • @tabacblonde Yeah I've seen that performance on youtube by Blondie Chaplin. That was great. Btw that was probably the nicest thing anyone's ever said to me on youtube so thanks and you're definitely no fool if you're that nice to a random stranger. And you like Brian Wilson which is also criteria to be not a fool. Thanks

  • A song dad n' Paul (etc.) should've done.

  • Damn! He kix arse!!!!!

  • Awesome!

  • great pipes...DNA? Who cares.... he's a good singer. Try and pull off 'Sail on Sailor'. Sean nailed it. Thanks Sean and band. A-One.

  • Never heard Sean's voice sound so good. This is indeed an amazing song and interpretation. No need to say Sean's last name when he looks like John Lennon with hair died black.

  • Think he might be singing about his father, who became a sailor in the five years Sean knew him. And John's own father was a sailor. So maybe this is behind the choice of song?

  • @camasunary Most likely its because Sean has a documented intense respect for and liking of Brian Wilson, but then so did his father.

  • @ms8596 The Beatles were intensely in awe of Pet Sounds and studied it as a muse to get further in their own sound.

  • @tabacblonde I do know that about the Beatles and Pet Sounds. I also know that Sean Lennon has been following Brian, expressing his great love of his music since Sean has been in the public eye.

  • @camasunary Do a bit of research you thick bastard. This is a Beach Boys song! Christ! The cretins you find on Youtube.....

  • Awsome rendition of a truly underrated song!

  • @captainadam1 - oh yes wasnt it great how he didnt mention his last name... only the son of one of the most famous musicians EVER. not hard to see how ronson got on in life is it...

  • beautiful sean, the best cover of this legendary song. impeccable, goosebumps all around

  • beautiful sean, the best cover of this legendary song. impeccable

  • what a morsel !

  • out of this world - sean's take on this song is very special

  • l love this rendition and i wish i could buy it at Itunes. I think that Sean knocks it out of the park, since to me, is better than the original.

  • The more I listen to this song, the more I'm fascinated by Sean's performance of it. It's really just beautiful, and the only parts he has trouble with are the same parts everyone has trouble with - the repetition lines framed by horn blasts. I don't know if the trick is to muster a bit more vocal power, or play with the mix, or to skillfully slip soft vocal lines between the horn blasts --- but it's nothing that couldn't be worked out in the studio. Put out a studio version!

  • Wow, he looks a lot like John now

  • This is a remarkably excellent cover of a brilliant track!

  • This is a hard song to sing. Lennon sings it better than most. Ronson and Lennon should do it in the studio.

  • @radweed2009 True. Nobody will ever sing this song better than Carl Wilson

  • @ppimptrue If you're talking about the original studio version from 'Holland', Carl didn't sing the lead vocal (nor on the '73 live LP.); it was Blondie Chaplin. Carl was a wonderful singer though.

  • The great orchestration deserved a better voice than Sean's.His voice just doesn't fit the song.

  • you go sean lennom

  • This is what it is all about - Beautiful moment that rightly deserves a bucket load of more hits - c'mon...John Lennon's son with the world's most relevant modern producer performing Brian Wilson!!! Sean's work on Friendly Fire is completely individual and unique - great post!!!

  • @Lennononly Sorry.....Sean is completely untalented. He is however connected, being the son of the great John Lennon. He has a annoying nasal voice. I can not accept this spoiled brat as a musician. If his last name was not Lennon......he would be working at a 7-11 somewhere in your neighborhood. If he did not look just like his dad, no one would pay attention to him.

  • @Fooblestheclown: Who the hell are you? He has had a lot of musical training from a young age and I can assure you he's got more musical talent in one pinky than you have coursing through your veins. A lot of singers who don't have the most perfect voices have become very successful. Sonny Bono, Mick Jagger and Joe Cocker just to name a few on a very long list. If you dislike him, fine. To say he has no talent on the other hand is totally baseless and without merit.

  • @thunderstruck665 You know....I hope some day Sean Lennon marries Yoko Ono. This way all you people who think Sean Lennon is talented because you miss his father....will have him back. Sean and Yoko will then carry on and have a baby and name it......Ron.

  • Sean Lennon's rendition of the classic Beach Boys tune.

  • This arrangement is genius with the heavy base and sax stressing the beat and giving a "bluesy" feel to this Beach Boys classic.

  • Goes to show you the perfection demanded by perfectionists.

  • Comment removed

  • @Fooblestheclown Probably right...

  • Comment removed

  • Sean nails it

  • Well they might compare him because he LOOKS like him and in many intentional ways. Clean up!

  • admit it people, this is not a great performance. very asian voice.

  • @Darna668: Racisty Misty

  • Incredible song!!!

  • Brian really didn't have much to do with the writing of this song. It was primarily written and composed by Van Dyke Parks, Ray Kennedy, Jack Rieley and Tandyn Almer.

  • Ordinarily, I consider Sean Lennon a great, underrated songwriter who can't sing his way out of a paper bag, but he really makes that odd voice of his work here. There is no greater apologist for Brian Wilson's music out there today. He oughta join the Beach Boys!!

  • great outstanding anytime brian wilson's music gets attention i am happy

  • Not bad.

  • He's got his daddy's nose.

  • you cant mess up a great song no matter who you are and Sean does this very well, orchestration is great

  • Poor Sean,he's got his fathers looks and his mothers voice...

  • @SaltOfTheEarth69 hahaha nooo way. . its not that bad. nothing like big poppas obvs. . .but common who can step out of a shadow like that!

  • @SaltOfTheEarth69

Hahaha...that's funny, but I don't think he got his mother's voice, though.

  • @SaltOfTheEarth69 : LOL....yeah....your right

  • he looks so much like john now. I like the beach boy version so far - but I didn't know Sean was performing. Good for him.

  • To his everlasting credit, a day doesn't go by when Sean doesn't play at least one Brian Wilson song. With all the nay-sayers of Brian's talent, Sean deserves credit for resurrecting and keeping the flag on the pole of the greatest songwriting talent the great Beach Boy, even if at the expense of his old man. That's courage.

  • You are so right. I forgot about this song and how great and beautiful and haunting it is.

  • Yeah - a for effort

  • @phddddd : my god....there are actually nay-sayers of Brian Wilsons talent. They must not be muscians. I am a huge Beatles fan but in the past say 5 years I have really gotten into the Beach Boys and they are just amazing. The arangements are incredible and I really like Brian's bass playing as well

  • @inkey2

Have you heard Brian's Smile album, when he finally put that project together the way it was meant to be? Amazing stuff.

I, too, find it amazing that anyone questions Brian's talent, and agree that they must know nothing about music. The Beatles were certainly fans, Pet Sounds being the main inspiration for Sgt Pepper.

  • HA! Never heard Sean sing like that before! Pretty cool!!

  • I totally dig the instrumental, but Sean's voice is... ehh... it's aight. He's not Blondie

  • love love love this version of this song. John would be proud.

  • this is pretty cool!

  • he is not bad, i like his singing.

  • I adore Blondie Chapin's version of this amazing song. But Sean and Mark have done a fabulous cover. Cheers!

  • basically...

  • Incredible song!

    Thank You Brian Wilson.

  • He smiles just like John...

  • excellent .... Sean has a nose which is a cross from John and Yoko ...incredible .... Good for Sean always on key ...wonderful performance ..

  • @73xlh: Opinions are like assholes, everybody's got one.

  • Freeze this on the enlarged screen setting at :35 and tell me you DON'T see John.

    Heartwarming

  • @WhereMyChicken yea I see him --undeniable

  • Best Beach Boys song of them all but little known. This is a really nice cover

  • agree absolutely harpin!!....a great cover...jesus...it's like Lennon covering the Beach Boys...well it is a Lennon covering the Beach Boys....would have been fun to hear John cover this...

  • From Holland....and agree bs...although "Trader" was the opening tune to that album..."Hi"....lol if you know the album you will get that!

  • @Dukabor What? Sail On, Sailor is the opener to Holland. Trader is track 6.

  • don't judge someone's talent just because you don't like his mother. He has his father's genes too.

  • @KackyKay I think it's fair to say some people's perceptions of Yoko are ridiculously unfair.

  • It was great how Mark Ronson didn't even mention Sean's last name.

  • Hear hear!

  • @captainadam1 He's a Lennon, you don;t need to mention his last name I'm thinking

  • @captainadam1: I know, all he says is "my friend Sean!" I love Mark and Sean's interpretation of Brian Wilson and Blondie Chapin's masterpiece here.

  • I think the kid does all right...you know who sings the hell outta this is the Hootie guy in the Brian Wilson TV tribute awhile back.

Trivia: the lead vocal on the original track was actually not sung by any of the usual Beach Boys, but by Blondie Chaplin, who with Ricky Fataar (The Rutles) was a short-term member in the early '70s, and now tours with the Stones.

  • He sing it beautifully! xxx

  • I don't know why everyone compares Sean with his dad..According me Sean has his own voice..I think his voice is beautiful because is unusual and doesn't sound like his dad or his mum Yoko..

  • I could say we should all be grateful he doesnt sound like Yoko but to be honest he does unfortunately .

On the basis of this performance he has truly inherited the musical capabilities of his mother.

  • actually its a very subtle timbre in his voice that....to me...sounds like John...yes he has his own voice but during this song I hear alot of John....it's a good thing...it means John's voice is still with us...wish he would sing more often?

  • @12584975 he doesn't necessarily sound exactly like his dad, but the similarities in vocal tone and pronunciation is most definitely there !

  • @12584975 I do agree with you but I dont know why you are asking such a redundant question. Imagine your father was more popular than Jesus. You might find it hard to escape that sort of shadow.

  • Julian has his Dad's voice. But both Sean & Julian look like their Dad. Sean's voice isn't bad, it just isn't the same as John's.

  • He looks like his Dad, but sure doesn't sound like him!

  • sean turns me on

  • Is everyone gay?

  • he's loosing his hair.. he's got a comb over going on.

  • The poor guy got his mom's voice!

  • bonni raitt much???

  • good job sean

  • no one thinks he's a good singer...we'll theyre wrong

  • i love this song so much. i wish they would record it!

  • Sean's voice is so intriguing. He hasn't inherited as much of his father's singing voice as one would think. Still, it is beautiful. Love this tune!!!

  • Have you not listened to Friendly fire? Its really similar. There is a slight Liverpool twang in his voice - although I personally couldn't hear it in into the sun. Really intriguing as you say.

  • No, unfortunately I haven't. But thanks for the tip!

  • Great version of this excellent tune :-)

  • Jeeeeeeeees. This is one of my favorite songs and I LOVE the original. BUT now this version is right up there as well. Bravo, Sean and the band!!!!

  • I have to say from what I've seen, this has to be one of Sean's very best performances, great version.

  • WOW!! can't stop comin back here!

  • haha Sean is using the lyrics
