The splitting can be a problem for me too. Usually it means my brush is too dry and I add just a tiny dab of water and then re-load my brush and it usually fixes it. It can also mean there isn't enough paint on your brush. It also is important to store your brushes clean and with the bristles flat and together so that it dries in the right shape.

I wish I knew what I do wrong with those arty cakes... My brush bristles always clump and split after I make my first stroke. Any tips?
