Nice solo, but if its Nels ripping that you want to see, check out his INSANE solo from 2000 with Mark Isham's Silent Way Project here on YouTube by typing in 'Nels Cline solo'. Be prepared and have a spatula ready to scrape your face off the floor!
Do any of the people commenting about who is and is not "the best" realize what subjective means? There is no right, there is no wrong, period. You may argue if you like, that's not my problem, just don't be mistaken in thinking your opinion is anything but your opinion. The lowest common denominator usually shies away from statistically dense forms of expression. Theoretical and accelerator physics needs passionate arguments if anybody here is interested.
I'd recommend Summerteeth or Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. A Ghost Is Born is a bit more difficult to grasp... Tweedy's guitar work on it is often very harsh and some of the songwriting isn't as immediate or direct. Though along with Summerteeth and YHF it's in their trio of truly epic albums (the others are all quality as well).
The fact that they aren't at Nels' level doesn't make them amateurs - almost NOBODY'S at Nels' level. Wilco is an amazing band - just more in the sense that The Attractions or Tom Petty's original band are amazing than "jaw-dropping master of all known musical forms and then some" like Mr. Cline.
@zzmook I guess you can't have it all. So then ,How about a fantasy band? I would like to see this: Call it, "NelHammer"...Nels Cline and Hellhammer ,most notably from Mayhem, on the drums. Of course It wouldn't ruin my fantasy if Mr.Cline Brought Watt with him.lol.

it still boggles my mind that such an incredible guitar player would join one of the most mediocre over-hyped bands in modern memory. and he still doesn't make them any better...
@prinznevsky "over-hyped" is most likely the worst possible adjective to use when describing wilco. They are one of the greatest bands right now, and my all-time favorite band, and they 100% under-rated, and "under-hyped". And even if you disagree, everyone watching this video except for you and your faggy blink 182 fan friend are going to suport wilco
@BOYthatROX I'm sorry, but Wilco having topped many "best of" lists from mainstream media in the past 7 years shows them to be NOT "underrated"; why haven't any Nels Cline Singers records been on those lists? Nels is a true musician and sonic explorer, Wilco is just half-assed junkie rock that people lap up because NPR and other tastemakers deem them a "great band". Don't get me wrong, Mermaid Avenue is actually quite good, if only for the presence of the brilliant Billy Bragg.
@BOYthatROX I suggest to listen to Nels' and Greg Bendian's reworking of Coltrane's "Interstellar Space" if you want to appreciate the true genius of Mr. Cline.
@prinznevsky i don't disagree that nels cline is a guitar genius, but i do disagree with you on your opinion of wilco. I dont know how to covince you that jeff tweedy is a brilliant song writer, and that their music could not be farther away than "half-assed". Wilco is also one of the rare bands that sounds just as good if not better live... But if you don't like their music, this comment isnt going to change anything.
@BOYthatROX precisely, so we agree to disagree? Having been a fan of Uncle Tupelo, I found Wilco to be quite...how should I put this..."not genuine". Wilco's music is just seems t me like Tweedy wanted to be a rock star with typical rock star press, Jay wanted to be a good songwriter. Tweedy compensated by having Nels' sign up for musical cred, but Jay was consistent in his vision. Art is not perfect just like people, and just like people there are those you like, and those you don't.
I just saw him in Pomona. During the big solo, Tweedy's guitar went on the fritz. While a roadie stepped on to fix it, for two minutes CLINE PLAYED BOTH HIS AND TWEEDY'S PART SIMULTANEOUSLY.
@Jakearoo14 I always like Wilco, but never could get a handle on the wannabe part of it. So many of Tweedy's lyrics are not personal to us and a bit stilted. Your comment put it into, "how should I say" perspective for me. Still like their music because of its variety and occasional hooks. Like to get your take on Okkervil River (but don't watch live clips(
Tal vez no conozca un guitarrista que me guste mas. Una lástima los pantalones.

I have most of his CDs, Nice solo but I won't define it as "rippin'".
jing479 1 year ago
@jing479 Neither would I. I fear most Wilco fans seem to be unaware of his large past; he's been around much longer than Wilco.

@flearhcp I'd say check of Being There, Summerteeth, or Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Any of them, especially the latter, will blow you away.
